Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. I did some work on the to-do list (aka the open tasks list) so that it's in one location (Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/to do), with its own talk page, cleaned up, and updated. The state seal is a moot point now, as there's some issue with its inclusion outside the article namespace (i.e. on project pages like this). The flag doesn't look too bad now, but if need be we can move it further down on the project page. -- SwissCelt22:25, 29 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-29T22:25:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-07-29T22:25:00.000Z-AJHalliwell-2006-06-06T02:31:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Alright, excuse my "noob-ness," but seeing as how Ohio is my first WikiProject, just a quick clarification... when an article is "De-Redlink'ed," (In this case, reffering to List of mayors of Cleveland, Ohio), that simply means removing the items from the list that link to pages that don't exist? In this case, again, that would mean keep the list in-tact, however, items on the list that link to pages that don't exist should simply just be the name of the person in text? I'm almost 100% positive, and I know everything can be reverted, but i'd rather get it right the first time. =) RiSK00:16, 24 June 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-06-24T00:16:00.000Z","author":"RiSK","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-RiSK-2006-06-24T00:16:00.000Z-De-Redlink_Clarification","replies":["c-Rovership27-2006-08-16T02:38:00.000Z-RiSK-2006-06-24T00:16:00.000Z"]}}-->

That's really a judgment call. If you think you can write a good article on the subject of the link, by all means do so. If you don't think that the subject of the link is notable enough to deserve an article, you may want to remove the link. If you don't think you can write a good article on the subject, but aren't convinced that no one else can, then just leave it alone. -- SwissCelt16:55, 16 August 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-08-16T16:55:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-08-16T16:55:00.000Z-Rovership27-2006-08-16T02:38:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Ohio (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. I'd also like people to weigh in on the nominations and help select what should be featured. Hello, everybody. I am the bozo who just recently created the new subcategories in the "People from Ohio" category. I thought that some of you might want to know why they were created, and why they often have so few pages in them.
The majority of the states have "People from [state]" categories which have at least 200 entries, sometimes over 1,000. This is clearly an unworkably large number for anyone wishing to use the category for research purposes. In 8th grade in Rapid City, South Dakota, the social studies class asked us to write, over the course of the year, reports on two or three people who were or had been residents of the city. Because of that, I have reason to believe that they could be used and probably are used for research purposes. To make such research easier, I looked at the list of metropolitan statistical areas and basically entered in one new category for each metropolitan statistical area.
I know that many of these categories might well be, in the eyes of you who know more about the cities in question much better than I do, misnamed or otherwise faulty. I apologize for any mistakes I may have made along those lines, and I would welcome any corrections, including deletion, that any of the rest of you might choose to make. With that in mind, I have also generally populated the categories with only one or two names, to ease in the process of deletion or renaming.
I thought you all should know why these categories were created, and felt some degree of responsibility for letting your know. I wish you all the greatest good fortune in making the coverage of your state in Wikipedia of the greatest scope and quality possible, and I hope that I haven't annoyed too many of you by my recent actions. There is some controversy regarding the ability of Wikipedia to use the Great Seal of the State of Ohio outside the article mainspace. The following is reprinted from my talk page, and I invite those associated with this project to comment on this issue. -- SwissCelt21:43, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T21:43:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T21:43:00.000Z-The_Great_Seal_of_the_State_of_Ohio","replies":[]}}-->
The seal underwent a design change in 1996 [1]. It is unlikely that the State of Ohio has released its rights to the image. Given the image is not old enough to have vacated the copyright, it is likely the image is still copyrighted. As such, we must presume the image can be used here only under terms of fair use, which precludes the use of the image outside of the main article namespace. Please see Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9. I've reverted your re-inclusion of the seal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio. Thanks, --Durin21:33, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T21:33:00.000Z","author":"Durin","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Durin-2006-07-07T21:33:00.000Z-The_Great_Seal_of_the_State_of_Ohio","replies":["c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T21:40:00.000Z-Durin-2006-07-07T21:33:00.000Z"]}}-->
Per O.R.C. 5.04, the "seal" thus depicted is the official coat of arms of the State of Ohio. O.R.C. 5.11 prohibits "private seals" from being used as the insignia of the government of the State of Ohio; thus, the official coat of arms depicted in O.R.C. 5.04 (and revised, as you state, in 1996) is not subject to copyright. It is therefore in the public domain. (I will, however, refrain from replacing the seal until people on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio page have had a chance to comment; see that project's talk page for more info.) -- SwissCelt21:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T21:40:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T21:40:00.000Z-Durin-2006-07-07T21:33:00.000Z","replies":["c-Durin-2006-07-07T21:58:00.000Z-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T21:40:00.000Z"]}}-->
Ok I've reviewed the appropriate sections of the Ohio Revised Code [2]. SwissCelt cites 5.11 as prohibiting private seals from being used. But, I do not see anywhere in the code that describes the offical seal as being a private seal? Furthermore, looking at 5.10 it says, "The design of the great seal shall not be reproduced, except as required by any provision of the Ohio Constitution and the Revised Code, unless permission to do so is first obtained from the governor" and "No person shall use or permit to be used any reproduction or facsimile of the great seal or a counterfeit or nonofficial version of the great seal for any purpose not authorized by the governor." It seems to me that the State of Ohio claims rights to the seal and does not want reproduction of it without authorization. Thus, I think use of it here is under terms of fair use. --Durin21:58, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T21:58:00.000Z","author":"Durin","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Durin-2006-07-07T21:58:00.000Z-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T21:40:00.000Z","replies":["c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z-Durin-2006-07-07T21:58:00.000Z"]}}-->
Heh, great minds think alike. I was just looking at O.R.C. 5.10, and typing a response when you posted this. See below. In the meantime, I'll defer to your edit, at least until we figure out how (and if) we can use the Seal on Wikipedia. -- SwissCelt22:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z-Durin-2006-07-07T21:58:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
Uh oh. I just found something that puts holes in my argument here. Take a look at this excerpt from O.R.C. 5.10:
The design of the great seal shall not be reproduced, except as required by any provision of the Ohio Constitution and the Revised Code, unless permission to do so is first obtained from the governor. The governor may authorize reproduction of the design of the great seal when the purpose is to:
(A) Permit publication of a reproduction of the great seal of the state of Ohio;
(B) Aid educational or historical programs;
(C) Promote the economic or cultural development of the state in a manner deemed appropriate by the governor.
A permanent record shall be kept in the governor's office of each permit to reproduce the design of the great seal.
No person shall use or permit to be used any reproduction or facsimile of the great seal or a counterfeit or nonofficial version of the great seal for any purpose not authorized by the governor.
So it would seem I'm in the wrong here, and Durin is correct. In fact, I'm now not sure if Wikipedia can use the Seal in the article mainspace without authorization from the governor. We may want to look into that. -- SwissCelt22:02, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z","author":"SwissCelt","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z-The_Great_Seal_of_the_State_of_Ohio","replies":["c-Durin-2006-07-07T22:16:00.000Z-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z"]}}-->
Under terms of United States fair use law, so long as the seal is used to illustrate the state of Ohio (which it is currently complying with, and complying with Wikipedia policy as well), then Ohio can not prevent its use, regardless of their claims of rights. Some companies attempt to control use of their logs in this way as well. But, copyright law allows such uses as we are using them here, under fair use. Thus, so long as we use the seal only in the main article namespace and only on articles directly having to do with Ohio, then we're ok. I've removed a number of violations of the use of the seal (and it's older cousin). It is currently in compliance. --Durin22:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-07-07T22:16:00.000Z","author":"Durin","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Durin-2006-07-07T22:16:00.000Z-SwissCelt-2006-07-07T22:02:00.000Z","replies":["c-Ajwebb-2006-07-11T01:12:00.000Z-Durin-2006-07-07T22:16:00.000Z"]}}-->
Since we have used the seal to help promote Ohio and educate people in Ohio, we would be able to use it (even if I was forced to contact the governor). Hello. I think that Akron Aeros could use a cleanup. More specifically, the roster. What defines a "top prospect" and are the "Current Aeros who have appeared in at least one game with another team in 2006" and "Appeared in at least one game with 2006 Aeros but no longer with team" lists necessary? Agreed. I deleted the lists you mentioned beginning with the "Top Prospects" list. They clutter the article, are not timely, and are not cited. Thank you for pointing this out. I've actually taken a look at the picture located in the commons and found that the source for the picture is also incorrect. I've notified the user of this issue. OK, byways.org also has this copyrighted picture of the Belmont County Courthouse: [3], which is quite different. I noticed that the population for the city itself looked correct. But when the article stated, "including the township 52,401," the article is incorrect. There are only 16K residents in Painesville Township. You might get 52,401 if you include the 16K residents living in near by Concord township as well? Did the author intend this?

I've noticed that several county categories (including those for Cuyahoga County and Hamilton County) are getting a bit on the full side and have become rather difficult to navigate, as has the category for high schools. Explain what you have in mind for the many districts that cross county lines. For instance, should Defiance High School get two category tags, one for "Defiance County" and one for "Paulding County", or should it have a "Defiance and Paulding Counties" tag? While that would be an issue if we were talking about school districts, I rather doubt that would be an issue with the individual schools, since the buildings are almost certainly in one county. It would actually be a reduction in the number of categories per article, since an article on a high school in Summit County would have Category:High schools in Ohio and Category:Summit County, Ohio replaced with Category:High schools in Summit County, Ohio. - EurekaLott01:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-09-08T01:54:00.000Z","author":"EurekaLott","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-EurekaLott-2006-09-08T01:54:00.000Z-ClairSamoht-2006-09-07T04:11:00.000Z","replies":["c-ClairSamoht-2006-09-08T02:38:00.000Z-EurekaLott-2006-09-08T01:54:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. I've noticed some odd additions to the "notable residents" sections in various articles on cities in Ohio. If the item claims to be "famous" (as they often do) but I've never heard of them, plus there is no reference and no Wikipedia article, I delete the item immediately. I also delete items that don't even attempt to convey famousness or noteworthiness, some of which might even be considered libelous (such as "major pot smoker"). I don't suppose there's anything that can be done to prevent this kind of spamming? Another type of spamming I've seen in these sections is the placement of a very famous person's name on the list, apparently in an attempt to bring fame or prestige to the city or town, although there is no indication on that famous person's Wikipedia article that they are or were ever a resident of that town. (Examples are Eric Clapton in Hilliard, and John Lithgow in Yellow Springs.) I don't delete these because I don't know for sure that these celebrities aren't from these towns, but I am quite doubtful. Vid the Kid - Does this font make me look fat?22:13, 11 November 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-11-11T22:13:00.000Z","author":"VidTheKid","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-VidTheKid-2006-11-11T22:13:00.000Z-\"Notable_Residents\"_spamming_on_city_articles-1","replies":["c-CRKingston-2006-11-12T07:00:00.000Z-VidTheKid-2006-11-11T22:13:00.000Z"],"displayName":"Vid the Kid - Does this font make me look fat?"}}-->
John Lithgow used to live in Yellow Springs, his article used to say that he lives in Yellow Springs but that is no longer true and his article has been edited (check the history). Eric Clapton did live in Hilliard for a while, he had a girlfriend from there and his baby was born there. Maybe you could do a bit more research on people somewhere other than in Wikipedia before assuming that someone has added them to article for the sake of "prestige." I don't get why you assume that people have bad motives behind their editing. At the same time, facts should be documented, so instead of assuming bad motives, why not point out that these facts need references. Personally, I know a lot of interesting facts about things that have happened in towns where I have lived that I can't reference (or don't feel like taking the time to find references), so I don't add them to articles. It's supposed to be a encyclopedia, not a collection of hearsay, even if the hearsay is true. The references are what proves it is true. There is nothing wrong with questioning facts that are surprising (in fact, I think that makes you wise), and a reference would provide that the fact is correct. And to answer your other question, the font does *not* make you look fat, you look fabulous, darling. I have done the work of redirecting all the library articles included in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adams County Public Library, including fixing the links from the branch library locations. I did some work cleaning up articles that I touched here and there as well, when I noticed something amiss. I'm not perfect, and I did it all by hand - so, if you want to check over my work, that wouldn't be a bad idea.
In the future, I will try to stay out of trouble and involve interested wikiprojects when I am deleting articles, especially large numbers of articles. --Brianyoumans03:39, 15 December 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-12-15T03:39:00.000Z","author":"Brianyoumans","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Brianyoumans-2006-12-15T03:39:00.000Z-Sandstein-2006-12-14T21:02:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

I have proposed merging a number of library articles into their respective localities or counties. These are libraries that are either slightly larger or contain small amounts of information beyond the basic stub, but I think that all of them could be merged in without adding more than a couple of lines to their respective articles. I think redirects should be left in place, as with the articles deleted in the Adams County Public Library AFD. If people feel like improving the articles to show more notability, or object to the merges, please do so.
I think if these articles are merged, the remaining library articles in "Category:Libraries of Ohio" will all be either very large systems, or articles where some attempt has been made to write an interesting article and/or show notability. --Brianyoumans01:53, 16 December 2006 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2006-12-16T01:53:00.000Z","author":"Brianyoumans","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Brianyoumans-2006-12-16T01:53:00.000Z-Even_More_Libraries","replies":["c-Brianyoumans-2006-12-16T01:57:00.000Z-Brianyoumans-2006-12-16T01:53:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Hi all. I was doing some slight editing on Great Dayton Flood when I added a few external links. One of the links I found showed that the entire article content had been stolen from an Ohio history website. I commented on this on the article discussion page, and set out to right the wrong. I've completely rewritten the article and expanded it based on new research. The new article includes extensive references and I believe every fact stated in the article is referenced. Because it was the weekend, I was able to carve out some time to work on this. That won't always be the case. What is the correct action to take when I find a plagarized article like this? Nive work! Very nice indeed. Some folks simply slap a copy vio tag on the article in question, assuming the original author (or some other editor) will eventually come along and fix the article. The problem is this wipes out all the article, not yet the plagarized sections. You took the right route - reword and rework the entire article. Thanks! Actually, if all of the article's revisions are copyright violations, the correct course of action is to place a copyvio tag on the article. Then, if you want, you can compose a replacement article on a temporary subpage. When the offending article is deleted, the subpage will be moved to the main namespace. See Wikipedia:Copyright problems for details. I removed the problem revisions from the article's history. Nice job on the rewrite. - EurekaLott20:12, 15 January 2007 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-01-15T20:12:00.000Z","author":"EurekaLott","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-EurekaLott-2007-01-15T20:12:00.000Z-CRKingston-2007-01-15T01:29:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Over the past week, I've added navigational templates to articles on about fifteen counties in northwest Ohio, beginning with my native Logan. I've received a couple of messages from Ruhrfisch that I found helpful, and (on his advice) I thought I'd ask all of you your opinions. All of county templates can be viewed at w:Category:Ohio navigational boxes, plus the Wood County one that I didn't design. Two questions:
What should be the image in the top left of the template? Since my design is literally a stripped-down version of the {{Ohio}} template, I just left the Ohio state flag image in there. However, a few other such templates had already been made on several different designs: {{Trumbull County, Ohio}} has a map, {{Summit County, Ohio}} has the county seal, {{Hancock County, Ohio}} has a state map with the county highlighted, and {{Wood County, Ohio}} has absolutely no image at all. What do all of you think is the best idea? I added a request for a Logan County flag here, based on this page, but it's not been fulfilled yet. Ruhrfisch tells me that there might be copyright problems with so doing, an idea I would never have imagined (after all, we have city flags for Toledo and Columbus), but I definitely don't want to cause problems.
Should cities and villages be on separate lines in all boxes, regardless of how many of each there are? I placed all on the same lines, largely because most of the counties that I've done have few cities; however, I'm open to the possibility that this could be a symptom of my having grown up in an area with few cities :-) Should it be done like {{Hancock County, Ohio}} for all counties, or should there be an option for small counties to have one like {{Logan County, Ohio}}? After discussion with Nyttend, I've proposed subcategories for the Ohio-geo-stub type, which is now distinctly large, at over 800 articles. Per-county categories would be going a bit too far to the opposite extreme (though per-county templates would be sensibe for clarity), so I'm wondering... what larger regions would OH be most commonly, officially and/or well-recognisedly into? I am curious if there are some people on here with a few good images for some Ohio articles.
Specifically:
Either the Columbus Zoo gate or good zoo image, possibly a Colo image as she is of considerable importance to the zoo.
A good image of the exterior of the Greater Columbus Convention Center or possibly its interior. I recently created this article and would like to add a picture of the front as the design of this building is very relevant to the article.
Easton Town Center, aside from the need to expand the history portion of the article, needs a good image of the front of Easton Station or another good picture. Also, the logo I think should be added, which I can do.
Please tell me if you have any or there already are some on Wikipedia. Also, if there are other needed images, maybe people should ask for them here and we can consolidate what we have. Thanks. It's been a while since we had a collaboration. Therefore, I nominate Bellefontaine, Ohio for this project's collaboration of the week. I admit to partly selfish motives for this: I've put some amount of work into the article thus far, and was burned in a dispute over the article's assessment. However, that's also why I'm putting it up for collaboration: It's time for me to take a step back from the article, as of course nobody "owns" an article on Wikipedia.
