"And also to prevent some sort of majority-rule thing, since obviously there are a ton of American editors who could potentially overrule any other country's editors." Yes, but nothing changes, since, if I'm not mistaken, most articles are written in American English. In my opinion, the rule is wrong; obviously, given the majority of Americans, most of the articles created are written in American English. In conclusion, I appreciate the basic idea of using British English as well, but it doesn't change anything since most articles are written in American English. En.wiki seems to have been created to be almost exclusively American. Hey, @JackkBrown. I've never checked, actually. But given that so many countries (probably most of Europe and former Commonwealth nations) teach British English, I'm not sure I'd assume that more American editors than probably any other country = more articles use AmEng.
So it seems like you feel the rule should be something along the lines of, "Since British English is what's taught as a second language in country X, any subjects that are closely associated with that country should use BrEng"? I mean, you could open a discussion at WT:MOS, but given that the Manual of Style is a contentious topic with over 200 archives, I would assume this has been discussed there before.
But here's the thing: This rule was in all likelihood put into place as some sort of compromise to prevent edit-warring. Changing it now would mean literally millions of articles could be thrown into contention. Like every European country, most of Africa, much of South and Central America, probably China and Japan...anywhere English is taught as a second language, which has to be over 100 countries, articles about that country would be getting the kind of pushback you're getting over adding that Use BrEng template at articles for Italian foods.
And for what? The different variations of English are nearly 100% comprehensible by pretty much every fluent English speaker no matter the variant they learned. Flavour vs. flavor or gray vs. grey may look "right" to someone, but that doesn't mean they won't be able to understand what they're reading. Even biscuit vs. cookie is comprehensible, and many of the words that are actually different words -- eyeglasses vs. spectacles, for instance -- are familiar to many English speakers. Even the words that aren't -- toilet vs. loo, lorry vs. truck -- are often comprehensible in the context of an article.
Why would we want to create a huge amount of havoc for so little reward? thank you for your reply. I would suggest using British English for all articles that use both forms, but not for articles that use only American English. @JackkBrown, so if an article is written in AmEng, but at some point there's been some insertion of BrEng into it, we should change the entire article to BrEng? Why? Yes, a single change; "savoury" is used in the majority, then it's correct to change only "savory". JacktheBrown (talk) 14:12, 15 May 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240515141200","author":"JackkBrown","type":"comment","level":7,"id":"c-JackkBrown-20240515141200-Valereee-20240515135400","replies":["c-Valereee-20240515144100-JackkBrown-20240515141200"],"displayName":"JacktheBrown"}}-->
Well, if savoury is used once and savory is used once, and otherwise the article would be identical in either BrEng or AmEng, you'd want to make them consistent. Best practices would be to go check which was added first, then make the other consistent with that first usage. But that's a lot of work, so if you're positive you aren't missing some other instance of usage of AmEng isn't also present, a BOLD change of that single word to make the article consistent in your own preferred variant would be fine, but if anyone else objected you'd want to open a talk section and discuss.
Be aware that this is a highly-contentious area to be editing in.
There's also no reason you couldn't make redirects for BrEng if an article is at an AmEng spelling. No one would object to that. Valereee (talk) 14:41, 15 May 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240515144100","author":"Valereee","type":"comment","level":8,"id":"c-Valereee-20240515144100-JackkBrown-20240515141200","replies":["c-JackkBrown-20240515144400-Valereee-20240515144100"]}}-->
I noticed that you changed it to "savory"; in my opinion, this isn't correct, since "savoury" was written twice and "savory" only once (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pastizz&diff=prev&oldid=1223979366). The majority was for British English (of course I don't doubt your neutral point of view, you're an administrator and you know what you're doing). JacktheBrown (talk) 14:44, 15 May 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240515144400","author":"JackkBrown","type":"comment","level":9,"id":"c-JackkBrown-20240515144400-Valereee-20240515144100","replies":["c-Valereee-20240515153600-JackkBrown-20240515144400"],"displayName":"JacktheBrown"}}-->
Oh, because of the wikidata item? Meh, I don't really care whether it's BrEng. It's not something I tend to worry about much other than for consistency within an article. I just don't want to see people bickering over it, which again is the point of the rule. If you want to revert, fine by me. Put something into your edit summary to explain to other editors, something like 'per talk at Valereee's page', so they won't think this is some sort of edit war over English variants since we had this convo here instead of the article talk.
Don't assume an admin is necessarily correct. We're generally pretty experienced, but it doesn't mean we know more than other similarly-experienced editors. It's generally also expected that an admin won't remain an admin long if they can't maintain a neutral point of view, but we are just editors whom the community have decided can be trusted not to abuse a few extra tools. (talk page watcher) Hi, Valeree! Hello, JackkBrown, just can't believe how much text has been written about one letter. In the hope of avoiding at least some future disagreements over such trivia: the article Pastizz is on a topic closely related to Malta, so should use Maltese English (which is essentially British English but with some quite distinct and surprising differences). When the American spelling was added with [[Special:Diff/1021482067|this edit] in May 2021, the standard English/Maltese spelling was already in the page (the eighth word of the text). I'm going to go and restore it now but ... don't we all have better things to do? Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [1]
New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [2][3]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [4][5]
The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes: .collapsible, .multicol, .reflist, .coordinates, .topicon. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.

When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [8]

Question: since I correct Italian food pages in their entirety, if I find an article that's inconsistent with English, can I report it or should I ignore it? You could mark it with a cleanup needed tag, noting the reason as 'inconsistent English variant'. Do you use Twinkle? It makes tagging easy. Looks like there's something at User:Plantaest/TwinkleMobile for mobile users. But even without twinkle, you could add
{{Cleanup|reason=Inconsistent English variants.|date=June 2024}}
at the top of the page, which places this tag (except it detects that it's an article, not a user page):
and also adds it to the appropriate category. Recent changes
The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [14]
The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the mw-reference-text class, Parsoid now also adds the reference-text class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [15]
Problems
There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [16]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [17][18]
The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a <span class="mw-cite-backlink"> wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [19]
On multilingual wikis that use the <translate> system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [20]

Looks like the two of you have worked this out? Yes, Dag, until you have 500 edits + 30 days, you can't edit in that space. Be aware that this is just an attempt to

You are still a very new editor, and editing in that subject area is fraught. The fact you go from 499>500 edits does not really do much to ensure you know how to keep yourself out of trouble. I will not undo my revert, as I think there are other problems with your changes. Phrasing like triggering an uproar in many parts of Israeli society, immense backlash, shockingly released, conveyed his continued love for the IDF is weakly sourced and/or stretches the limits of maintaining a neutral and encyclopedic tone. The quotes added are numerous and lengthy, including a lengthy quote in the lead. I'll leave a note at WT:ISRAEL to see if someone else will step in. I don't have the bandwidth for this. First off, there has been immense backlash and uproar in parts of Israeli society since he was released, the sources I provide will say the same exact thing. And secondly, the quote that was provided immediately after I wrote that he conveyed his love for the IDF, is literally a direct quote of him conveying his love for the IDF. And it was in fact the first speech he gave after getting released. Weird… why are you trying to hide these things in America? This has been one of the biggest scandals in Israeli military history. The backlash is currently going on, at this very moment. Recent changes
People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [21]
The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [24]
Problems
Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [25]
Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [26]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [27][28]
Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [29]
Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [30]

Recent changes
Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [31]
The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [32]
Problems
You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [33]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [34][35]
Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [36]

I wonder if you would express an opinion on whether I am free to make some edits on a subject. There is an open complaint against me at [37]. It seems the comments seem to split between (a) "both sides need to step back and (b) sort this out one article at a time" and the original complainant having some level of fault. (Difficult for me to give a fair summary, of course.) I don't detect any admin making any comment on the matter.
I have sought the advice of an experienced editor on one of the subjects at [38]. The advice (paraphrasing) is that I should go ahead and make the edits that I feel fairly represent the sources. Is that something that I should do with the ANI matter still open?
The original complainant seems to have ceased to be active on Wikipedia. It is anyone's guess when they will come back. (They could be reading this now.)
As it happens, I will be away for two days from tomorrow, so already have little time for anything other than the briefest editing until I am back. But I need to understand if rules, custom etc. allow me to address some of the deficiencies that I perceive to be the outcome of the original complainant's editing. In the first instance, this would probably be clarifying what we know about Austronesian involvement in the translocation of the banana to Africa.

A number of ways. Someone may assess consensus at ANI for a community action, someone may take individual action, or sometimes discussions get archived unactioned. Thanks. I am steadily learning more about this issue. It seems we have an editor who, deliberately or accidentally, erroneously takes their own POV from sources. The result is Wikipedia articles that do not represent the academic consensus. I have even gone so far as to contact a prominent author of papers on one subject to confirm my understanding (just to check it isn't me that's wrong). The answer did confirm my take from the literature – perhaps in stronger terms than I would have used. The catch is that an uninvolved editor would need to do several days' reading to discover that. So I don't see a minority subject in Wikipedia getting this resolved easily – we do not seem to have the mechanisms to deal with this type of article content issue. Unless I am missing something about how Wikipedia works... The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.
The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:
Sammi Brie (submissions) with 557 points, mostly from 1 featured article on KNXV-TV, 5 good articles, and 8 did you know nominations; and
AryKun (submissions) with 415 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Great cuckoo-dove, with a high number of bonus points from that article.
The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC).
