The WikiProject Film Newsletter Volume V, no. 12 - December 2010
Project news
As 2010's credits have concluded rolling, our project had another successful year in improvements in various areas throughout the project. We saw the completion of the Tag & Assess Drive, which resulted in 31,000 articles being reviewed and re-assessed. In January, the most popular article of the year for WP:FILM was Avatar, reaching 5.1 million views for the month. Guidelines for writing film articles changed significantly, so if you have not already, it would be a good idea to re-read the page for bringing current articles into compliance with guidelines. As we improved dozens of articles to GA/FA/FL status in 2010, consider making a New Year's resolution to bring an article up to a higher class, pushing yourself to reach a level you have not yet reached. With over 150 members, our project would see great success if each editor worked to improve just one article.
WP:HORROR, our sister WikiProject, is currently holding a discussion on how to revitalize the project. Consider weighing in on how the project can better serve the articles under its scope and its members.
Koavf has suggested bringing The Fountain up to FA and would welcome assistance from other editors in further improving the article. It is currently undergoing a peer review, where any comments would be helpful for the article's journey to FAC.
Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Tron, Tron: Legacy, Inception, Black Swan, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month.
At the beginning of 2010, WP:FILM had 63,000 film articles. Our project currently has over 78,300 film-related articles, with over three hundred unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! Remember to always add the {{WikiProject Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. If you believe that an article should be assessed at a certain class, feel free to follow the assessment scale and assess the article yourself (it's not too difficult to determine the basic classes such as stubs, categories, or lists). Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class.
Spotlight Update: Multiple films and film-related articles have reached GA and FA status in December 2010.
Remember that any editor can give the WikiProject Film Award to another WP:Films member. If you do present this award, please make mention of it here or tell one of the newsletter editors who will then include it in the next issue.

Hi! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

If you are not aware, deletion request on articles on places have always failed. Well I have come across articles on places that were deleted based on the prod. But per WP:GNG, Konappana Agrahara, does not meet the general notability guidelines. Besides, the article remains unchanged since 2009. Really, then please go ahead :P. WP:GNG doesn't talk about articles of geographical locations. If you have been around for sometime, you would have known the non-consensus of notability guidelines of geographical locations and the status quo is usually maintained. So what if the article remains unchanged, there is no deadline for Wikipedia? Please go ahead and improve the article, if u wish so. BTW I have received a few complaints that you are biting new users. Ok sorry! I take that as a suggestion and would not repeat the same again. All User:MikeLynch and me were trying to explain to him was about the copy-vio issue on Chowdiah Hall article and his additions of list of banks and shopping complexes to Girinagar. Apparently he did not take it in a positive sense. I was upset when he said bye and was not feeling like replying back for which I asked MikeLynch to do the same. What makes me feel sad about your warning is that just because it was on my talk page, it does not mean I was the only one involved, User:MikeLynch too was involved. Hey no, Kindly don't feel discouraged or hurt. As I have said , I am only trying to help here. I have also talked to MikeLynch (privately over mail) . Sorry, If my statement also read as a warning, which definitely was not my intention. If you had seen my mail to Ashok [4], I have explained what is notable & non-notable to be added to place articles. No need to get upset too. Enjoy what you are doing here..
But please be extra cautious while communicating with other users and making deletion requests. Also remember to read this Wikipedia:Geographic_imbalance#Solving_geographic_imbalances. Hi, please take a look at the article on Makara Jyothi. The article is poorly written and has serious factual issues. The Travancore Devaswom Board has recently confirmed that the Makara Jyothi is man made. I have made some changes in the article because of this. But I don't think it would stay on for long on the article. So could you protect the article? If it is too early to ask for protection, could you please add it on your watchlist? We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
