Hello SusunW, I hope you are really well and enjoying your African biography chain!
You may remember there was talk on the WiR page of a biography on Maria Elena Lucas? Once I started it as a word doc, I realised that her profile would not really exist publicly if it hadn't been for Fran Leeper Buss . So I have had a go at a page for her. It is a bit thin and I remember you said you might be able to offer a little help in the way of sources. If you had a minute...no hurry..could you take a look and see what you think? Thanks if you can! Balance person I love this story. It's like when I was doing Eunice Foote and discovered Elizabeth Wagner Reed, so I had to write her too. On Buss, I noted that her children's names are Buss and Leeper, which tells me those were her married names. So I checked family search, which led me to her mom's obit, Wilma Irene (née Richardson) Barker. That in turn led me to her father's name C. Francis "Frank" Barker. (The C stands for Clyde). This says she attended Iowa State Teacher's College, First marriage says both of them were students at the University of Iowa. This says hubby graduated in 1969 and they were living in Colorado. I know it is her husband because This says his parents were M/M Lowell Leeper, same as in the marriage notice, although both of these say he was from Lineville. So did she go with him to Philadelphia becomes the question. Still searching. She earned her bachelor's in 1964 and I am positive it is her because the address matches this birth record with her husband's name. This and this give info about the work at the crisis center. The latter one also tells us she was not remarried in August 1972, but was by October, when this appeared. About six months later, her new husband had to go to jail for conscientious objection to the Vietnam War. Weirdly, I find nothing in New Mexico, but I'll try another newspaper database in a bit. Archive.org has this, this, this. Photo is probably available if you want it. That article and this one talk about them both being hired for a counseling job in NM. Another possible photo, but not as good IMO, although the article itself is fabulous. She taughtwomen's studies!!!! at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Book review. There's also a lot at Jstor from the WP library. I hope these help. If you need more, please ask. I am happy to help. I'm going to check out the photo, so one more message will follow. Okay, Balance person on the 11 April 1975 photo. I don't see anything on the photo itself that indicates a copyright, nor a photographer name. The masthead has no verbiage or copyright mark, nor does the publishing notice. Checking the copyright catalog for 1975, there are no entries in Periodicals for the Las Vegas Optic. All of that means that the photograph can be uploaded with the license {{PD-US-no notice}}. As a special bonus, while I was looking for these details, I ran across this on Maria Elena Lucas, one part of the article is about her, the other about Buss's book. It's in Spanish, but you should be able to use google translate and your camera on your phone. part 1, part 2SusunW (talk) 18:54, 13 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240413185400","author":"SusunW","type":"comment","level":6,"id":"c-SusunW-20240413185400-SusunW-20240413182600","replies":["c-Balance_person-20240413190000-SusunW-20240413185400"]}}-->

Balance person All of those, except archive.org are through the Wikipedia library. As for the photo, I am not technically inclined and can't do anything other than clip and upload. My friend GRuban has magic wands and skills (maybe fairy dust, or spells?) to lighten, brighten, flip and do stuff I have no clue how to do. There should be a clipping tool on your computer that allows you to clip the photo from the rest of the article and save it. Then at the top of a page to the left of the Wikipedia world icon are 3 lines (not the 3 lines next to your user name, above that) and if you push that one option is upload a file. Choose that and then "Upload a freely licensed file". Follow the instructions and use the license I gave you above. If you get stuck, let me know, or ask George. He's really helpful ;) SusunW (talk) 19:21, 13 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240413192100","author":"SusunW","type":"comment","level":8,"id":"c-SusunW-20240413192100-Balance_person-20240413190000","replies":["c-Balance_person-20240414092900-SusunW-20240413192100"]}}-->
Hi SusunW! I have enough edits now to get into the wikipedia library but am uncertain how I get to newspaper articles such as the ones you found about Fran Leeper Buss from newspaper.com. and newspaper archive etc. I have put these phrases/ organisations' names into the search box but don't get anywhere near news articles. It is probably staring me right in the face but I can't see it at the mo! Balance person No worries. You only need six months editing time and 500 edits to sign up. Sign in to the WP library. At the top of the page is a search bar that only searches EBSCO. You might want to search that database, but usually I know what database I am looking for. Beneath that are a bunch of different resources (mostly in alphabetical order). Scroll down to say newspapers.com or newspaperarchive.com (if she were British, there is a British Newspaper archive tab). Pick newspapers.com and hit the button marked "access collection". Most collections do not require any additional steps, but to clip newspaper articles, you need to then go to the top right corner and create a user login. Once you have done that enter "Fran Buss" in the search bar that says keyword. You will see a bunch of articles appear. (If needed, you can narrow the location or date - the top boxes don't seem to work anymore - by scrolling down to the right side and adjusting the date range or a particular state. You can also change the country from the default of US to the UK, Canada, etc.)
Click on the first article that pops up. If it is one you want, at the top right there will be a clip and more button that allows you to select text, add a description and then save. A new box will appear at the right. Type a name for the clipping (I usually put the author and title so it's easy to paste into my citation.) and press save. In that box a blue link will appear to the clipping. Press it and it will take you off of the newspaper full page and to the clipping. Sometimes you will find someone else has already clipped an article, you don't have to reclip, just press the blue link. Once you get the clipping link at the top, it will look like this https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/. Change it to <https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/ and use that changed link in your article. (No worries if you forget to take out the wikipedialibrary part, a bot will fix it.) Newspaperarchive.com and the British newspaper collection work the same way, in that you must create a separate login to clip. Sounds complicated, but you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly I think. For other sources like Jstor or Oxford U Press, you just search and download the article, no extra steps required, except taking out the WP library proxy. Let me know if you get stuck. I think we now have a workable first version of this. When I have time, I'll add those that are missing from Category:Women's studies academics but I think it would now be useful to add a few photos. Perhaps you could help with this as you certainly know who deserves to be highlighted. You may also have other suggestions on how the list could be improved. Hey Ipigott I just finished Monika Triest and tried to add her and her photo to the list. I can add more, but I wanted to ask about placement. Obviously, she's Belgian, but she never started women's studies programs in Belgium, instead at the University of Cincinnati and University of Amsterdam. So where should her photo go and since it overlaps other countries is that bad? Thanks for adding our first photo. I don't think it matters too much where they are placed but it would be good to have photos of some of the more prominent figures from the early stages as well as some of those who stand out today. Perhaps you can add some yourself or let me know who deserves to be covered. Ipigott The problem is going to be the time frames. A lot of the women don't have photos, or if they do they are fair use. Powerhouses like Argentine Ana Amado, or Austrian Edith Saurer, or Bulgarian Krassimira Daskalova or Dutch Francisca de Haan don't have useable photos. I went through the list and found a few Florence Thomas, Rada Borić, Andrea Pető, Erella Shadmi, Gloria Wekker, Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí, Flora Botton, Patricia Mohammed, Mollie C. Hello SusunW! I have been playing with the research tools you suggested and had success with JSTOR and Newspaper Archive. Fantastic! As Maria Elena Lucas lives, I think? in your part of the world, I wondered if you would be good enough to take a look at the draft? I am aware for example that Chicano/Chicana/Mexican American labels are sensitive. There may well be other things I have missed or got wrong. No hurry from my side. You may notice from the history that I made a mistake and tried to apply categories to the draft. I understand now that I should only do that after a move to main space. Ho hum! Balance person I am so happy to see your progress in editing. So glad that you are having success with the Wikipedia library too. For me it is an invaluable resource, as there are no public libraries here and I don't have any affiliations that qualify me to join the private ones. *sigh* I think the article looks fine. As for Chicana/Mexican American, I think you are fine with Chicana, she was part of the movement by that name, and Buss identifies her as such. Basically, as far as I know people who were activists in the 1960-1980s primarily used the term, but after that it fell out of favor, mainly because of the association of machismo with it. If another editor feels strongly enough to change it to Mexican American, I wouldn't object. I also put the categories back. You can see how I did it, basically, you add a leading colon until you take it live. One other note, were it me, I would add the link to Forged Under the Sun from archive.org and insert page numbers for the book's citations. It is easy to do, just use {{rp|page#}} after the citation markup. Interestingly, OKA advise their translators not to use Google translate as it causes too many problems. You might like to try it out and let me know what you think. (pagestalking) Thank you, Ipigott for mentioning this. When I saw the edit summary, I decided to pop in and mention that I have been using DeepL for some time and I really like it. For the languages that it covers, I think its output is better than the ggl alternative (though I continue to use both, for understanding, as you say, Susun). Unfortunately, DeepL doesn't provide translations for all the languages that I have interests in, e.g., Catalan. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:40, 20 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240420144000","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Rosiestep-20240420144000-SusunW-20240420143500","replies":["c-Ipigott-20240420152800-Rosiestep-20240420144000"]}}-->

Yes, that's true, Ian, but my preference is to translate from the original WP article, and if it's CA-WP, then I immerse myself in it, though I will look at the ES-WP article, too. @Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for stepping in. Maybe I looked it up at the time but as it started with languages I know pretty well it was probably not of much interest to me personally. In any case, I don't "translate" articles from other language versions of Wikipedia but I do draw on their sources when creating English versions, mainly in connection with biographies of women. If however I'm reviewing articles translated by others, particularly newbies, I sometimes run a Google translation myself to see how errors have occurred. What particularly struck me now was that OKA specifically recommends DeepL as being better than Google for translating Wikipedia articles. It's the first time I've seen such strong support. Over the next few weeks, I'll try to experiment a bit myself to see if there really are significant differences. (It looks to me as if the OKA recommendation goes back to 2022. I've noticed major improvements in Google translate since then.)--Ipigott (talk) 05:35, 21 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240421053500","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Ipigott-20240421053500-Dr._Blofeld-20240420174800","replies":["c-Dr._Blofeld-20240421062300-Ipigott-20240421053500"]}}-->
I think it was 2022 I recommended it, and pretty sure Susun noted it too! It's definitely a lot better for German and Spanish. I still use google translate more though as you can hear an audio of the text. I don't like that DeepL now have a 1500 word restriction without signing up. ♦ Dr. Blofeld06:23, 21 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240421062300","author":"Dr. Blofeld","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-Dr._Blofeld-20240421062300-Ipigott-20240421053500","replies":["c-Rosiestep-20240421140700-Dr._Blofeld-20240421062300"]}}-->
I don't let the word restriction get in the way. My work-around is to have multiple DeepL and Ggl tabs open. Listening to the audio of the text? That's brilliant, @Dr. Blofeld:! Never thought about doing that but I can see (hear... haha) the benefit. I say this especially as I am mentoring a polyglot African Wikipedian who "listens" to Wikipedia policy pages rather than only "reading" them. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:07, 21 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240421140700","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-Rosiestep-20240421140700-Dr._Blofeld-20240421062300","replies":["c-Dr._Blofeld-20240421143600-Rosiestep-20240421140700"]}}-->
The best way to learn a language is to view the text and translation, hear the audio, and then repeat it along with the audio, a technique called "shadowing" I find. Paste 4000-5000 words of foreign wiki articles into google translate and select the slowest voice option. It's a time issue for me, you need to put in an enormous amount of work and hours to become really fluent. At present I'm happy just reading a few thousand words a week in a few different languages and learning very gradually, but you need to really be living in a country where you need to speak all day every day to really become a great speaker. ♦ Dr. Blofeld14:36, 21 April 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240421143600","author":"Dr. Blofeld","type":"comment","level":6,"id":"c-Dr._Blofeld-20240421143600-Rosiestep-20240421140700","replies":[]}}-->

Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

Hi @SusunW, I plan on closing the peer review since no one seems to be responding. Per off wiki, my mother said it was fine since I have to show her (she literally speaks English better). I also plan to see my friend Vanderwaalforces who is an expert and can copy edit it before sending it to FAR, and adhere to the review that will be further made there (I also know it isn't going to be tough this time). I want your thought in this. SafariScribe My thoughts are that Graham said he is reading it and would have comments. My experience is that reviewers can take a week to ten days to review but nominators need to respond immediately to their feedback. As volunteers, their time may not be completely focused on your request, they may have real life commitments, etc. After a week, ping him and tell him that if he has no feedback you want to close the peer review. Personally, I'd like to see at least 2 other reviewers before it is nominated, but we may not get those. Yes, that's me, sitting here twiddling my thumbs doing nothing. I actually spent a month on Adichie. Would that we had more input from other reviewers, but I've done the best that I could to guide it along. Reviewing is not my forte, but I gave it my best. WIG has an upcoming editathon, but I am torn. None of my GA are being reviewed, apparently because I don't review enough. So, do I spend another month just reviewing? or do I actually try to write something? It's frustrating, because I think that the best use of my skills, and what I enjoy, is writing, but I think may just need to stop nominating altogether. I genuinely believe that other people's input improves an article, but the pressure to review tit for tat feels like a lot. That said, I'll look at her. Now I feel bad. I like to draw articles I think will interest to your attention, but please don't feel under any obligation to do anything about any of them. That said, you are a very good reviewer. But you also write excellent articles. So short of cloning you I dunno what the best solution is. Gog the Mild why should you feel bad? You never once told me that to get a review I had to do a review of something. I love that you tell me when there are articles I would be interested in reviewing. I feel no pressure from you at all. Methinks cloning me would create far more problems than solutions...I don't follow rules well, except when I do. I march to drums no one else hears, I literally dance at the supermarket. On the bicentenary of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, I remember our recent uplifting choral concert in pictures, on my user page and in my concerts (leading to the two at the church's article). Sorry, I've been hip deep with my birthday and other real life stuff and not on line much. The paper article is paywalled, sigh, but I am glad you enjoyed the concert. Love, love, love your photos. Wisteria is lovely. Also those Hawthorne blossoms. I think I have never seen such before. But what caught my eye most was "Blooming greater celandine, Ehrenbach, after rain". Dear Chaac, we need rain. Surviving May is always the goal here because in June, rain will return and break the heat. They say that this is the hottest May on record. It's been between 44C/111F and 48C/118F all week with humidity above 70%. The Bach piece was fabulous. Thanks for sharing. Gerda Arendt I thought of you last night when we were watching The Piano. One of the people who played in Victoria Station was just amazing. His style is a fusion of baroque and jazz and he sings (counter-tenor) in a made up language, because he doesn't want the words to distract people from experiencing the music. Thank you! Come see the roses some day ;) - Today's story (per TFP) is Ethel Smyth, and you are the first I asked: could she by GA? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240524094100","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":13,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20240524094100-SusunW-20240523222700","replies":[]}}-->

That would be really cool. I've spent the last month mentoring an editor working on his first FA nomination, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She would also make a great candidate for IWD if we manage to finish the peer reviews and pass the nomination. What do think then of planning ahead, trying to make Smyth a GA for a DYK that day 2025, and perhaps FA the following year. - I have plenty of Bach this year, each week a cantata turning 300, next BWV 20, and so no need to learn a new topic ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:25, 24 May 2024 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20240524152500","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":15,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20240524152500-SusunW-20240524151700","replies":["c-SusunW-20240524152900-Gerda_Arendt-20240524152500"]}}-->

The Writer's Barnstar
I have many Barnstar to offer but specifically this one. Thanks for all your edits including minor copy edits, as I enjoy reading your articles, and even see tips of how you write from scratch; those has made me write well for the past days after I had worked with you. The review you made gave more insight in reviewing, source analysis, words to watch, and more. Thanks for being that excellent and motivating. You are an awesome person. Draken seems to be done with the review and had made some changes including Wikipedia:WikiVoice aspects. I now need a final copy edit which I have sent to a friend, a copy editor from the guild. I know you may also have friends who copy edit well too since when more hands do something, an improvement never regard, rather it increases. Thanks and waiting for your responsive reply and encouragement. Hello SusunW, I noticed you have an article listed at WP:GAN. I recently started a project, Good Article Review Circles, and thought you might be interested. This initiative helps articles get reviewed more quickly through collaborative efforts. By joining, you'll review others' articles and get your own reviewed in return.
