Today's music is played by my brother's orchestra, conducted by two very young men on their way up, - the picture was taken shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began, - more detail on my talk. Images reached the day of the Tenebrae concert mentioned in July. - Thank you for looking at the mess, it's comforting that I am not the only one ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:46, 2 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230802174600","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230802174600-August_music","replies":["c-SusunW-20230802175200-Gerda_Arendt-20230802174600"]}}-->
That's cool that your brother does music too. You aren't the only one, people get so wrapped up in stuff that isn't truly important in the great scheme of things. Thank you, comforting again! - My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend of weddings, so also like the spirit ;) - Pics to come, I promise one cake, the other was too large! Good music, and better even in the concert ending the second day, - Goldberg Variations theme for an encore, after Dohnányi Serenade. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:41, 7 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230807204100","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230807204100-SusunW-20230802175200","replies":[]}}-->
Again not by me: today's story - with the triumph of music over military - is uplifting! - No cake yet, but a butterfly and open-air opera. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:23, 9 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230809212300","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230809212300-SusunW-20230802175200","replies":["c-SusunW-20230809214000-Gerda_Arendt-20230809212300"]}}-->

Yes! - Now: picture of heart-shaped cake(s) uploaded! - Today's story is about a tenor, - why his roles are not linked on the Main page remains a mystery to me. The cakes are beautiful, but I am more interested in the pitaya in the image before. Who knew this yummy, yummy fruit would grow in Germany? I've been busily working on GA reviews (3) and articles on indigenous women, between runs to pick up friends from abroad who are here for medical stuff. Life is a zoo, but an amazing adventure. Pitaya - like babana and orange - is eaten in Germany but doesn't grow there ;) - I raised the question on Richard Wagner if his wife deserved room in the intro, - from a woman's point of view. One more day uploaded, with another wedding cake - I couldn't resist. Very cool, particularly happy about the wife. I am totally stoked as I just worked out how a woman who sources indicate was single her whole life could have married and had children, which other sources support. Lots of research, but finally discovered, she didn't, she had an older sister who was also named the same thing as her. You cannot make this stuff up. Thank you! - I didn't have to investigate yet what you describe ;) - Pleasant work yesterday on Berit Lindholm, who made it to the Main page the same day! Would you perhaps find a review or two? But she was in the U.S: only for one season, - I think she disliked to be so far away from her daughters. I could find only that bit, - not how many, not if married. Survived by grandchildren. Interesting interview (if you have time), last question how she would like to be remembered, and she said: as a good grandma by happy grandchildren. - Oh, and congrats to more GAs! Berit is nominated for DYK, btw. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:32, 15 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230815183200","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":9,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230815183200-SusunW-20230815180400","replies":["c-SusunW-20230815185300-Gerda_Arendt-20230815183200"]}}-->

Thank you so much! - I'm sorry, I identified the Met with America ;) - I'll take #5 for now, - only good about the dead. #4 and #6 are previews. #5 has extra info about her first child, as much detail as "four months pregnant". - Funny, I also had two GA reviews, one done, one open (and I asked for patience for these jobs that can't wait). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230815194400","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":11,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230815194400-SusunW-20230815185300","replies":[]}}-->

Cool. I managed to get through one more GA review but had another one start. Thank you for the intro to Graham87. He did quite a bit of linking and some editing on Michael Trujillo, after we got him separated from his dad, Miguel. My pleasure, - Graham helped me a lot when I was a newbie, - I need less help now, but still know where to call. - Today I heard a delightful concert, "Himmlische Freuden", remembered having heard Vilde Frang (Bruch concerto, in Zürich, with my brother's orchestra), and succeeded in preparing Renata Scotto's article enough for the Main page (which took two days). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:03, 19 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230819220300","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":13,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230819220300-SusunW-20230817224100","replies":[]}}-->
Today's story is based on a 2011 DYK that would not pass 2023 reviewers, - hooks have to be of interest to the general public, which opera singers are not, so they say. Take Berit Lindholm, discussed here. - I added pics until a happy day with excellent food. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230821173900","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":13,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-20230821173900-SusunW-20230817224100","replies":["c-SusunW-20230821175100-Gerda_Arendt-20230821173900"]}}-->
Sometimes it is just easier to not do stuff ;). I definitely understand the issue of topics that are not interesting to the general public. But, since I write to learn stuff, I don't really care if other people find my topics interesting. Food, one of the most intimate things, IMO you can share with someone. It gives a piece of your soul. Crazy zoo at my house, but we managed to get our out of town visitors settled, surgery completed, follow-up from surgery completed for another and I am working on a crazy complicated article about an Indigenous woman. Glad you had a happy day. Mine has been fruitful and positive. Thank you for understanding. By "happy day" I meant the one to which I updated the pics, 13 August. - DYK: I believe the most important thing for a hook is to say something specific to the subject, not something that could be said about others as well. "interesting" is such a wide concept, - many things interesting to many I don't care about, and what about minorities? I hate hooks that say someone was this or that before following their calling, - I want to know about the calling. - As for Lindholm, Floq understood me ;) --
Yes, I saw that. And absolutely, what is interesting to me, may not be to others and vice verse. Of general interest often seems to apply to pop culture, which is definitely not my thing. Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

I had not realized that one of the court cases ending Virginia's poll tax, Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections, had roots in one of the communities near my house. Annie Harper, the complainant in the case, lived in the community of Gum Springs, which is just around the corner (I could walk there if I wanted - it would take me maybe a half-hour, given that we live at the back of my development). I'd never heard anything about her story, but a few months ago the Commonwealth unveiled a historic marker right by her former home. I got a couple of pictures when I went to lunch one day: here's the marker, and here it is in situ. I did a little googling, and there doesn't appear to be enough information out there to develop a separate article about Annie Harper, but you may have more luck. I did, however, discover that she's buried locally, in the church cemetery which is about a mile in the other direction from me; one of these weekends I want to go over there and see if I can get a picture of her grave. (And probably a bunch of other pictures, and I'll end up creating a category on Commons, but that's neither here nor there.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa.22:19, 21 September 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20230921221900","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ser_Amantio_di_Nicolao-20230921221900-Poll_tax_redux","replies":["c-SusunW-20230927133100-Ser_Amantio_di_Nicolao-20230921221900"]}}-->
Ser Amantio di Nicolao so good to hear from you. Sorry to be slow to answer, but we were without internet last week as we were doing my mom's 90th birthday in Oklahoma. (There was internet, we just didn't have time for it.) This is a really cool development. One of the reasons I love doing women's history is that because it is circular and not linear, i.e. a whole network of people vs. "this one really great dude", it's makes history more relatable. Its amazing how many diverse women worked in causes that by studying the women, you learn more about the society and the issues they were trying to solve. It'll take me a few days to get back on my feet so to speak, but I'll see what I can dig up and let you know. The article Lotta Dempsey you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Lotta Dempsey for comments about the article, and Talk:Lotta Dempsey/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. You and I have had this conversation before, but wanted to share an update. I had every intention to finish cropping and uploading images from the U.S. PD book Michigan Federation Forum into WikiCommons while on my current travels, but find myself in a country where I can't access the pages. It's my bad that I hadn't asked a Wikisource person to the book to Wikisource. Don't need you to do anything; I'm just griping over my first cup of coffee in a new land. I can say that the scenery out of my hotel window is breathtaking and the many birds flying around are better amusement than cropping images on such a fine day, so I shall let it go. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:49, 19 October 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20231019014900","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Rosiestep-20231019014900-Here_we_go_again...","replies":["c-SusunW-20231019130500-Rosiestep-20231019014900"]}}-->
Rosiestep can you access them via VPN and then upload them without VPN? Just a thought. I've never actually tried it, just been frustrated when traveling that I cannot access stuff. This last trip to the US was really annoying about that and when I was leaving, someone suggested using VPN, so I didn't try it. And, Rosiestep, make sure to enjoy the birds and all the details, the sounds, the colors, around you. Look for the little things in your travels. ARoseWolf The smells, taste, music, artwork, and people of a place are usually what I remember. Yes, Yes, Yes. A friend once told me it was dangerous to leave the designated areas for tourist but I would have missed all the wonderful things about a place if I stayed within the lines. Hi Susun, Hope all is well. I'm trying to find more information about Walt Whitman's April 1887 lecture on the Death of Lincoln at Madison Square Theatre (see the third-to-last entry at here). As you can see from the explanatory footnotes, FN b and c, sources are in contradiction about a lot of the details. I know it's a bit out of your wheelhouse, but can I ask if you mind taking a brief look and letting me know if you can find any more primary sources about it? No worries if you don't have the time or interest, just thought I'd ask a stronger researcher than myself. Cheers, Eddie891TalkWork03:59, 29 October 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20231029035900","author":"Eddie891","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Eddie891-20231029035900-Any_information","replies":["c-SusunW-20231029153300-Eddie891-20231029035900"]}}-->
Hey Eddie891, I've spent a couple hours on it and find all of the same contradictions you did. My 2 ideas were to figure out where his financial journals are because this says he kept meticulous records of his donations and whether he kept a diary. I don't see any such thing listed in his papers, nor any correspondence with Whitman. I also find no mention of the poet in Carnegie's autobiography. Sorry I couldn't help more, but as a consolation, here's some reviews on some of the other lectures.[7],[8],[9],[10],[11],[12]. I also found this advertisement which puts into perspective how big a crowd there must have been to raise $600. Please feel free to ask me anytime for help and I'll give it a shot. Two of our favorite games were trying to find license tags from each state and naming how many varieties of cows we could find. In connection with sources related to Márcia Campos, I came across this detailed account of the Caracas congress. I also see that several communications from Campos on letter-headed paper refer to the organization as "Women International Democratic Organization" (see for example here). The weight of sources citing it as "Women's", makes me think it is a translation thing. My mistake. I wanted to draw attention to "Women" rather than "Women's". Probably not too important and may well be a mistranslation. I'll try to cover more of the non-English speaking women as time permits. For today, continuing with Campos.--Ipigott (talk) 14:15, 15 November 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20231115141500","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Ipigott-20231115141500-SusunW-20231115140000","replies":["c-SusunW-20231115143200-Ipigott-20231115141500"]}}-->

Finished Campos for now. Glad to hear your computer's working again. Maybe you should just buy a new laptop with a large screen. Prices are not as high as they were. Covering Indonesian women is an ambitious undertaking. If you face any problems with Dutch, I might be able to help you along. I'll also try to add to my list of WIDF people and cover a few of them with biographies. It might be a long-term assignment as I keep coming across new names. On the other hand, I've been wondering if we have not fallen into the trap of dismissing the significance of socialist/communist organizations and their participants as a result of our Western background. In retrospect, many of their activities seem to have been based on fairly sound principles. Maybe we should be devoting more time to them as historical information becomes increasingly available. It would be interesting to find out if there are any university-based research initiatives along these lines.--Ipigott (talk) 16:00, 15 November 2023 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"20231115160000","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-Ipigott-20231115160000-SusunW-20231115143200","replies":["c-SusunW-20231115164700-Ipigott-20231115160000"]}}-->
Yes, I am resigned that the computer has to be replaced and also that this will be an on-going project. Absolutely agree with your assessment, which is what de Haan called the "iron curtain" divide. Basically as you say dismissing the women and their organizations because they were affiliated with communism. I think I always knew it, but writing Matsuoka certainly made me much more aware of how similar our lives were but also how similar globally the struggles to decolonize were and how the cold war impacted people. It's a fascinating project for sure. I'm wrapping up Umi and will ask you to look at her. Hi Susun! I realise I should have put my query here rather than on the WiR talk page sorry! I now have wiki library entry and have tried to search and find that Dictionary of Afro Latin biographies. But I just get reviews of it. Is there a page where I can read about how to actually use the library? I don't seem to know what I am doing! I expect there are lots of help pages somewhere?
