After looking carefully through draft:Benneth Nwankwo, I edited it a bit and then tried to move it to main space. I received a notice that only an administrator could do so. Apparently the first time the article was refused was for copyvio but I've checked this out and there are no longer any issues. The draft is the first article created by Olugold, a new member of WiR. I can't see which administrator is preventing its creation but it would be good if you could sort things out. It seems important to me, given the increasing interest in biographies of people from Africa. Hope you can help.--Ipigott (talk) 13:05, 29 September 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-09-29T13:05:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-09-29T13:05:00.000Z-Benneth_Nwankwo","replies":["c-Ipigott-2021-09-30T06:48:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-09-29T13:05:00.000Z"]}}-->
I've looked into the procedures for "salted" articles and have now made a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Decrease. Ipigott, Thanks for trying to sort this one out. As a friendly FYI, men's BLPs are not my area of expertise. Nor are they mine. I simply wanted to assist a new member of WiR. My request re "Decrease" was refused. As far as I could gather from their response, the article would first have to be resubmitted (they are probably referring to AfC) by an uninvolved editor. Apparently not me. This looked like a certain path to a further refusal. Fortunately DGG has offered to help if I do further work on the article. This is the second time in past couple of weeks that I have had this kind of problem with mentoring. I managed to resolve the last case but it took a lot of time and trouble over two or three days. I'm thinking of withdrawing from the experimental mentoring exercise I volunteered for and perhaps cutting back on welcoming new members of Women in Red. Perhaps others could be persuaded to take over, just as they have with preparing the meetup pages, etc. Apart from anything else, I find the whole mentoring process increasingly frustrating and am not surprised that so many enthusiastic new editors give up so quickly.--Ipigott (talk) 07:41, 1 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-09-30T17:05:00.000Z","replies":["c-Ipigott-2021-10-02T11:59:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z","c-Rosiestep-2021-10-01T18:17:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z","c-DGG-2021-10-02T01:41:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z"]}}-->
Ipigott, I hear you. Mentoring newbies is vital to the editing community, but indeed, it can be frustrating. Informing the experimental mentoring team about your experience would, hopefully, help them refine their process.
My attempts at commenting on problems encountered have received no response. No doubt the organizers are overwhelmed. Do you know of any other pages or talk pages in connection with mentoring where comments could be collected? The talk page on mentorship is no longer active.--Ipigott (talk) 11:59, 2 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-02T11:59:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-10-02T11:59:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-01T07:41:00.000Z","replies":["c-Rosiestep-2021-10-02T20:05:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-02T11:59:00.000Z"]}}-->
Ipigott, sorry, but I don't know about other on-wiki places for mentoring newbies. Many communities/projects do so off-wiki via Slack, Zoom, monthly meetings, etc., e.g. ArtAndFeminism, AfroCrowd, and so forth. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:05, 2 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-02T20:05:00.000Z","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":7,"id":"c-Rosiestep-2021-10-02T20:05:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-02T11:59:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Rosiestep, I also find the formal mentoring process anywhere at WP too elaborate--not that it's particular bad--i find almost all of the complicated WP processes too elaborate (such as requested changes or FAR). what i do is help people directly if they ask me a question or if i see something that indicates they need help. I will respond to a question, even if it's something I cannot do, or something, like help a paid editor learn their business, that I do not want to do. The only problem is when I have too many requests and fall behind. But if you or anyone here has a problem that might be in my scope, just ping. (my scope is mostly people and organizations, but I'll try anything except popular music and sports) I'll be glad to do what I can, informally. The reason i gave for wanting to become an admin back in 2007 was to rescue articles. I'm willing to unsalt whenever it makes sense, and I will sometimes transfer the draft myself to make it simple. Ipigott, I find it can sometimes be better to go directly to the admin involved, in this case SuperMarioMan, and ask if they could reduce or lift the protection rather than going through a noticeboard request. It doesn't always work but sometimes admins who patrol particular noticeboards can develop their own standards to judge requests while the admin who placed the protection might be more flexible. This is just a general observation, it's not a comment on the behavior of anyone in particular (I'm not familiar with the page protection noticeboard enough to comment on that place). Liz: Thanks for your advice. I would certainly have done this if I could have identified the admin involved but there was no indication on the notice I received when I first tried to move the article. I was simply told that only administrators were authorized to lift the protection. It was only when I eventually found and then contacted the noticeboard that I could access the "log" where I discovered that it had originally been SuperMarioMan back in 2015 who had first protected the article. Perhaps you could try to have the notice changed so that it clearly identifies the administrator involved. This would no doubt have prevented some of the trouble I ran into. As you may have seen, the protection ban was in fact maintained through the noticeboard and it was only thanks to DGG that the protection was removed. I hope the article now manages to survive. It was good to see that Innisfree987 also contributed to improving the draft.--Ipigott (talk) 09:30, 2 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-02T09:30:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":8,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-10-02T09:30:00.000Z-Liz-2021-10-02T03:13:00.000Z","replies":["c-Innisfree987-2021-10-02T18:19:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-02T09:30:00.000Z"]}}-->
Happy to lend a hand Ipigott. Looks like a good contribution to the African Cinema contest! (And I hear you about how onerous mentoring can be—I would have signed up for the pilot program if it were one assignment a week but given how intensive it could become, I really couldn’t manage multiple assignments a week. I’ll look for an opportunity to share that feedback.) Gerda Arendt, well, they are all lovely, but in particular, I'm drawn to "Red leaves, Ehrenbach" and oh my gosh, "Hackbraten, Riesling Pier, Hallgarten" looks absolutely delicious! I can only imagine how nice it was to listen to "Petite messe solennelle, St. Bonifatius, Wiesbaden"; sometimes I wish I lived in a large enough city where cultural moments such as this are so available. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:05, 6 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-06T00:05:00.000Z","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Rosiestep-2021-10-06T00:05:00.000Z-Gerda_Arendt-2021-10-05T20:08:00.000Z","replies":["c-Gerda_Arendt-2021-10-08T11:03:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-10-06T00:05:00.000Z"]}}-->

Today: see yourself, read about a hymn praying to not be on earth in vain, about a comics artist whose characters have character (another collaboration of the "perennial gang", broken by one of us banned), and in memory of the last prima donna assoluta, Edita Gruberová. I had to go to two grave sites last week, one who died now, one who died 10 years ago, so standing upright and in black seems appropriate. More colours - but subdued - can be had on hikes, - updated. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:11, 20 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-20T14:11:00.000Z","author":"Gerda Arendt","type":"comment","level":7,"id":"c-Gerda_Arendt-2021-10-20T14:11:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-10-10T23:07:00.000Z","replies":["c-Rosiestep-2021-10-20T18:54:00.000Z-Gerda_Arendt-2021-10-20T14:11:00.000Z"]}}-->

Here, it really is "Allen", not "Ellen". Per page 689, she was descended on her mother's side from "the Allens of the Bars". Similarly, Who's Who in America (1901-02 edition) specified that her mother's name was Lovina Allen. Hi, DragonflySixtyseven; I'm happy you stopped by. I reviewed these sources, including her entry in the "A Woman of the Century" biographical dictionary and subsequently moved the article back from Eliza Allen Starr to Eliza Ellen Starr. A) Sure. B)It was originally "Allen". You mistakenly moved it, a while back, to "Ellen", based on that error in Woman of the Century (like you, the original editor of WotC didn't realize the implications of Starr's mother being descended from "the Allens"). Today I moved it back to "Allen" (as per the overwhelming majority of sources, including The Life and Letters of Eliza Allen Starr]), and notified you. You then moved it back to "Ellen", thinking you were fixing your own error, but instead re-establishing it. So as to avoid a further clash between our edits, I suggest that you be the one to move it back to "Allen" this time. As you know, Rosie, I check out the background of all those who register as members of Women in Red. I was surprised to see that after joining Wikipedia on 15 October, Dinosaur209 was blocked on the 18th by Bbb23: "indefinitely blocked from editing because it appears that you are not here to build an encyclopedia". Perhaps Bbb23 did not look carefully enough at this new user's contributions as from the numerous edits made it certainly looks to me as if most of the early ones were simply attempts to see how things worked and some of the later ones seem to be constructive additions to existing articles. Misuse of a user page to start creating a new article is the kind of thing unexperienced newcomers can easily do but I don't think they should be excluded so early on. Maybe you could have a look at the contributions yourself and see what you think. It's a great pity when enthusiastic new contributors are not able to continue, especially as we now have a drive to try to keep them onboard.--Ipigott (talk) 13:16, 22 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-22T13:16:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-10-22T13:16:00.000Z-Problems_with_another_new_contributor","replies":["c-Rosiestep-2021-10-22T16:50:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-22T13:16:00.000Z"]}}-->
Hi Ipigott, I checked out the contributions of that editor. To me, they don't seem like a new editor; maybe they edited anonymously before, or they have/had another account(s). Some of their edits are okay; some weren't. I understand why the edits on their userpage were deleted. I am clueless why they registered as a member of Women in Red given their editing history, but that's of no matter. Would like to hear Bbb23's point of view regarding the indef block vs. something of shorter duration. Lastly, as a friendly FYI (maybe you know this?) and for transparency, I have never blocked or unblocked a Wikipedia editor, nor reverted an action of another admin, though, as an admin since 2009, I have the tools to do so and the knowledge of how to use them. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:50, 22 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-22T16:50:00.000Z","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Rosiestep-2021-10-22T16:50:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-10-22T13:16:00.000Z","replies":["c-Bbb23-2021-10-22T18:21:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-10-22T16:50:00.000Z"]}}-->
Hi Rosie, I'm afraid I'm having trouble stopping laughing. I focused only on your statement about never having blocked anyone in the 12 years you've been an administrator. I found that amazing (you don't even want to know how many editors I've blocked since I've been an admin), so I looked and you're almost right: you've blocked one editor for one month for vandalism (see here). What's even funnier is you blocked the editor in November 2020. They never edited again until October 7 when, hold for it, they vandalized an article. Given that it's already two weeks ago, I didn't do anything; if it had been more recent, I would have finished what you started. Next thing I did was look at your contribution count. While you're not blocking editors, you are one busy person. Very impressive. As for Dinosaur209, I don't normally respond to other users questioning blocks when the user has not requested an unblock (actually they removed my block notice - they had a habit of removing anything they didn't like from their Talk page), but because it's gotten this far, I will say that it was obvious to me that the user was a troll, so I blocked them as NOTHERE.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:21, 22 October 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-10-22T18:21:00.000Z","author":"Bbb23","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Bbb23-2021-10-22T18:21:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-10-22T16:50:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

My dear ARoseWolf, I wish you a happy Winter break! I think episodic breaks are good for all of us, and you have just reminded me to make that a priority, so thank you for that. I only know a little about the difficult issue you have had to deal with this year (hugs) but I admire very much your style and grace and how you speak with an authentic voice through all of it. This BBC article stresses the need for work on the Croatian page on climate change. As you have a working knowledge of Serbo-Croat and no doubt have Wikipedia contacts fluent in the language, I thought I would bring it to your attention. At a time when we are about to focus on women and climate, it may be appropriate to do sometime about it. If you are too busy with other matters, you could perhaps alert other editors who might be able to look into it. One of the problems is a general lack of inline sourcing and the inclusion of an unreferenced section on "Prirodni uzroci globalnih klimatskih promjena" (Natural causes) which diminishes the impact of recent scientific work.--Ipigott (talk) 07:52, 21 November 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-11-21T07:52:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-11-21T07:52:00.000Z-Climate_change_in_Croatian","replies":["c-Rosiestep-2021-11-21T21:44:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-11-21T07:52:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hey @Ipigott@Joy -- we are discussing doing more to at least remove objectionable content at WT:WikiProject Climate change. Part of the challenge is really need someone science literate on the local wiki to write many of these topics -- we need to build more of a culture and community of climate editing in general -- its less of a low-hanging fruit kind of thing.

Joy: Thanks for responding so quickly. I actually looked very carefully at the English WP Croatia pages and found that most of the contributors were either no longer active or had little or no knowledge of Croatian. You were the only one who was both active and had Croatian as mother tongue. Even though you are no longer a regular contributor in Croatian, maybe you could help out by alerting editors to the climate change problems in Croatian or in the other Serbo-Croatian speaking countries and in appropriate wikiprojects. You might even be able to suggest other editors who would be able to contribute. If you have time, it would be great if you could look at the article in question yourself. If you don't feel comfortable about making any improvements on the basis of the well-researched English version, you could could perhaps make suggestions on the relevant talk pages. Sorry to be so demanding but this is a serious problem which needs to be addressed. If you think it would be useful I can also add something to the WikiProject Croatia page but it has less than one page view per day.--Ipigott (talk) 16:16, 23 November 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-11-23T16:16:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":7,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-11-23T16:16:00.000Z-Joy-2021-11-23T15:42:00.000Z","replies":["c-Joy-2021-11-25T10:57:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-11-23T16:16:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hi
I have mentioned your name a few times today on the ideas page, but I thought I would send you a chat for the last one.
I would like your opinion on whether changing the proposal process would allow different groups to have a say, and drive change to make WP more inclusive and safer
Editors discussing proposals are not representative of the diversity of active content creating editors A 2011 WMF study by @EpochFail found that "new users were being pushed out of policy articulation",. I see no reason why other groups would no be treated the same. Policies and guidelines were opaque and calcified, and that essays are being created to fix gaps.
.Do you think it would help if the Proposal process was changed to using a WIkipedia space page?
A page has the advantage that opinions from diverse groups, and anonymous editors could be added, status would be far less easily identifiable than a signed talk page, and people vote only when the proposal was crystallised
A wiki page could have also set format that included sections (at least for people to at least to consider)
- Diverse groups, new user retention, readers, and different English skill levels), editor roles, and editor types.
- The scale of the issue (how often does this occur?), or effort (this will take 5 editor hours per week) or ...
- Does it simplify, increase readability
- Does it decrease global revert %, or increase up Quality??
- does it reduce conflict
- Is it just
- References and statistics
- The five pillars
- Measures of current and proposed impact
- A review date to see if the decision should be reversed
What do you think? Regarding your post on my talkpage. From an organizational behavior perspective, it's safe to say that changing processes "may" drive change, though, of course, the change(s) which occur might not conform to the original intention. Inclusivity and safety (and other topics) were discussed at length in 2018-20 by the 2030 Movement Strategy Working Groups (I was a member of the Community Health Working Group). These 10 Recommendations were a result, and they led to these 45 Initiatives, some of which are already being implemented. If you (or anyone else) has a process change proposal dealing with inclusivity, safety or any of the other 45 Initiatives, it is my opinion that the best place to have that discussion is on the particular Initiative's talkpage (on Meta) and/or the En.WP Village Pump. By the way, Wakelamp: if you have a process proposal related to content about women (e.g., women's biographies, women's works, women's issues), you might also consider sharing your idea at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:10, 22 November 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-11-22T01:10:00.000Z","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-Rosiestep-2021-11-22T01:10:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-11-22T01:00:00.000Z","replies":["c-Wakelamp-2021-11-22T14:51:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-11-22T01:10:00.000Z","c-Wakelamp-2021-11-22T14:51:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-11-22T01:10:00.000Z-1"]}}-->
I hope that you are clear that when I discussed the WMF election in my post and reply, that I thought the WMF election was fine. As I mentioned I am from Australia, where we have politicians who are quite good at being quite bad, The Trustee job looks very, very, tricky and involves balancing multiple groups, who have historical conflict, and have had rapid escalation issues or nuclear options (WP:ES). So.
I was careless when I just wrote diversity. I should have mentioned women as well,
Based on what you wrote (i"may" drive change or may 'not conform") I am assuming the community will not tolerate risk
My question "What do you think?" was not after support, but whether what I was suggesting would help fix the issue and whether it had a chance of success?.
My underlying aim is to reduce aggression, by correcting power imbalances and information access especially for new editors. I have no figures, but I would assume that the New Editors that quit after an AfD/Revert are disproportionately diverse or female You have seen many AfDs, but this was my first Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandon Merrill I wrote 'My concern is that what may be an acceptable notability for a dominant cultures such as China and America, may not be for minorities who may not have the same options". I felt like quitting afterwards.
I wanted the proposal process reformed for two reasons..1/ {{@epochfail}}'s analysis showed that policy change was becoming increasingly difficult even years ago, and i wondered if changing the way it worked might help, and 2/ I thought any changes to Editor's sense of self and status ( I use tools to do 100s of edits a day), might be very, very, hard to get agreement on.

Wakelamp, thanks for clarifying that your proposal has to do with AfD; I didn't know that's what you were addressing. I'm sorry to hear that you had a negative experience and I hope that it doesn't discourage you from editing. I am well aware that editors in general, newer editors in particular, can be really disheartened when the articles they've created are deleted. It's a real feeling of dejection. The WP:TEAHOUSE is a GREAT place to ask for assistance in general and if you haven't visited it yet, I'd enourage you to do so as the veteran editors who staff that area can be very helpful in addressing specific questions should another article that you've created be nominated for deletion. If you want to carry on a discussion regarding AfD process reform, please visit: Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion. The folks who work in that area might have feedback to the questions that you're asking and the points that you raise. For the subset of articles focused on women's content, Women in Red created this essay; I don't know if you'll find it helpful, but I'll link to it nonetheless: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Essays/Primer for AfD, AfC and PROD. I wish you well. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:16, 23 November 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-11-23T05:16:00.000Z","author":"Rosiestep","type":"comment","level":6,"id":"c-Rosiestep-2021-11-23T05:16:00.000Z-Wakelamp-2021-11-22T14:51:00.000Z","replies":["c-Wakelamp-2021-11-23T14:27:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-11-23T05:16:00.000Z"]}}-->

Stockholm, 1 December 2021
Dear Mrs Rosiestep
I have written the articles about my parents: “Elsa Cladera de Bravo” and “Fernando Bravo James” with the intention of showing their roles in the history of Bolivia. Whatever we may think of them, the fact is still that they have contributed to the political development of my native country. They deserve to be mentioned and not forgotten. Others may judge them and their efforts in politics and trade unions, but they must not disappear from our collective memory.
Yours sincerely

Hello Nadezhda Bravo Cladera. Thank you for reaching out to me. The biographies for Elsa Cladera de Bravo and Fernando Bravo James appear to meet Wikipedia's notability policy; this is not being disputed and there is no suggestion to delete them. What needs your attention, however, is disclosing your actual, potential, or apparent conflict of interest in creating/editing these articles. Wikipedia has policies regarding Conflict of Interest, which include writing about yourself and/or immediate family members (e.g. parents). I tried to explain that here, User talk:Nadezhda Bravo Cladera#Autobiography, where I also addressed a third article, Nadezhda Bravo Cladera, which appears to be your autobiography. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest policy and then disclose your relationship as an editor to the subject of these 3 articles on their talkpages: Talk:Elsa Cladera de Bravo, Talk:Fernando Bravo James, Talk:Nadezhda Bravo Cladera. Please let me know if I can answer any further questions. Well, "songs" is short for "places and songs and food and ....", and while there are no YT videos, we have music by Shostakovich and Bruckner, and if you scroll up, more music. Sadly, all singing in choir was cancelled for the season, so listening and singing to ourselves is what we can do. Ipigott, nice find. I was unaware of both of these. The New York Times, eh?! Wow! As for the statement (Although most of what makes Wikipedia work is the free labor, the Wikimedia Foundation needs money for technology and initiatives such as WikiProject Women in Red,...), the author made a false assumption as the WMF has never provided financial support to Women in Red. (edit conflict) But maybe she can't as she is on the Board? Perhaps Roger can. I mean, great that they mentioned our project, but bad that the insinuation was made that it is Foundation-driven or even that our project or any of the editors who are members of WiR somehow are paid/receive financial support from anyone. Reading the other one, it does say "volunteer- and partner-led campaigns", but it really is unclear that they have no involvement in the project other than as webhost and through providing connections to sister projects, i.e. the WP Library, other language WPs, Commons, etc. SusunW (talk) 16:45, 15 December 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-15T16:45:00.000Z","author":"SusunW","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-SusunW-2021-12-15T16:45:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-12-15T16:33:00.000Z","replies":["c-Victuallers-2021-12-15T16:48:00.000Z-SusunW-2021-12-15T16:45:00.000Z"]}}-->

Hi all - Sam here from the Wikimedia Foundation Communications team. Thank you for noting the issue in the New York Times article that incorrectly noted that the Foundation uses donations to support projects like Women in Red. The reporter reached out to us yesterday (Thursday, 16 December) to clarify, and we noted that many community-led initiatives are self-sustaining and don’t require any support from the Foundation, though we do support some through our grants program. We confirmed that we have supported AfroCROWD and WikiGap initiatives in the past (two examples mentioned in the article) with grant funding, but that Women in Red is not a project we’ve supported directly through our grants program (but that we deeply support the overall goals of the project and amplify its work). For further context, this story was organic and not a story the Communications team actively pursued (though we were happy to see the Foundation and movement recognized). Normally when we work directly with reporters on their stories, we clarify which initiatives are led by community groups and which are led by the Foundation to ensure appropriate credit is attributed. We appreciate the attentiveness of folks here to point out and correct this issue. Yes, it does badly need funding for contests like that world one which wad a tremendous success. Wikimedia doesn't compensate for time spent running and organizing contests Susun. So they have to be run in a way which isn't time consuming. I agree with that Encyclopædius, which is why it's important, or at least I think it's important to make it clear that they don't financially support us. You, a volunteer, took it upon yourself to secure a grant. You ran the contest and did all the work. They didn't just provide it to us to further our aims. Initiative had to be taken by a member. Encyclopædius, really appreciate all the time and effort and ingenuity you put into that REALLY successful contest. And I know that editors enjoyed participating in it. I don't think so, otherwise people would accuse us of being paid editors or shills for the WMF. I'd still love to figure out a way to organize reference materials for us, but try as we might, we have never gotten much support from the foundation to do that. I would've loved to have gotten funding to allow academics review our notability guidelines, but there was virtually no support for the idea from the members and the idea went no where. Thus, it seems to me that the only support they can give us is for of an individual, like Doc, to take the initiative in organizing another event. But I could be totally wrong. Someone else may have other ideas. Susun, WMF wouldn't pay me a cent to run a contest, I was covered before to develop a contest toolkit. They won't pay any individual a fee for running a contest, largely because of the paid editing issue and don't want to set a precedent where editors keep wanting to be covered for time. Our best bet as I once discussed with Victuallers and Rosie would be to try to get an independent annual grant which could allow us to run frequent contests and allow a few coordinators to commit full time hours to running it. ₪ Encyclopædius18:49, 16 December 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-16T18:49:00.000Z","author":"Encyclop\u00e6dius","type":"comment","level":5,"id":"c-Encyclop\u00e6dius-2021-12-16T18:49:00.000Z-SusunW-2021-12-16T17:09:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
When you consider that the final amount of the grant was only $4,025, it's amazing what a success the World Contest was. What is really surprising is the fact that there was no interest in repeating this kind of contest despite all the strong messages about equality and diversity. If we had been able to have a couple more contests along similar lines over the past four years, we would easily have been able to reach our target of at least 20% of women's biographies by now instead of hovering around 19%. Maybe our new WMF leaders will take a fresh look at the situation and at least consider whether those who arrange contests can receive some kind of compensation for all the time and effort they devote to their success. We will need to look carefully at all opportunities of receiving WMF grants in the coming months and years as well as how we can influence the priorities under which they are arranged. --Ipigott (talk) 17:21, 16 December 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-16T17:21:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":4,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-12-16T17:21:00.000Z-Rosiestep-2021-12-16T16:59:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

Glad you brought this up, Rosie. I think as we approach 2022 we could consider various ways in which WiR could become more effective. Here are a few possibilities we could discuss:
Monthly news letter distributed to newspapers and other sources which have shown an interest in our project. It could set out recent successes but also comment on obstacles to further progress.
More assertive collaboration with outside interests on topics of wide importance. Climate offers significant opportunities over the coming year.
A workable initiative on women in sports. As sports are the principal area where we lose out on articles about women, we need to be far more assertive on how we justify articles about women, probably initially relying on basic notability rather than belonging to "accepted" leagues, etc.
Added attention to minority communities, both in the developed countries and the third world. Women in Red could lead the way in covering diversity.
Raising interest in women's coverage not only in Wikipedia, Wikimedia and related projects but also in national initiatives designed to improve documentation on women's biographies, achievements and awards.
We might even try to publish a strategy paper for the next five years, setting out goals on quality, quantity and world influence.
I look forward to other ideas.--Ipigott (talk) 19:02, 16 December 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-16T19:02:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-12-16T19:02:00.000Z-New_strategy?","replies":["c-Rosiestep-2021-12-16T19:32:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-12-16T19:02:00.000Z","c-Ipigott-2021-12-16T21:42:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-12-16T19:02:00.000Z"]}}-->

Content strategy: (a) EN-WP, (b) other language Wikipedias, (c) sister projects, e.g., photos/Wikimedia Commons
Financial support strategy on-wiki: (a) Develop a presence on Meta, (b) Apply for User Group recognition, (c) Apply for an annual grant to include compensating an ED, (d) the ED hires interns to do some of the work we want done
Financial support strategy off-wiki: (a) Develop, maintain a website, (b) Convene a Board, (c) Fundraise, e.g., EMusk
Self-promotion: (a) Improve our social media presence, (b) write articles and op-eds for media, e.g. The NY Times
Great ideas from you too, Rosie. I think the off-wiki approach could be successful, at least in the short term. In addition to identifying potential funders, we should sensitize academic institutions and businesses about the importance of providing support. But when all's said and done, the most important road to success is of course to make the project more attractive to new contributors. As Roger rightly said back in 2015, we need to "pick up more women", not just as the subject of biographies but as contributors ready to create many more articles. I think somehow we need to give credit to those who encourage and mentor new editors, especially (but not only) women.--Ipigott (talk) 21:42, 16 December 2021 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2021-12-16T21:42:00.000Z","author":"Ipigott","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Ipigott-2021-12-16T21:42:00.000Z-Ipigott-2021-12-16T19:02:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups – is looking for new members!
The main role of the AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and update the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees as well as advise them on issues connected to chapters, thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.
The committee consists of five to fifteen members, selected at least once every year, to serve two-year terms.
Being a part of the AffCom requires communication with volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to understand legal texts. We look for a mix of different skill sets in our members.

Availability of up to 5-8 hours per month
Participate in monthly one and two-hour voice/video meetings
Commitment to carry out assigned tasks in a given time.
Facilitate and support communications

Public Communications (English writing and speaking skills)
Skills in other languages are a major plus.
Understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation.

Teamwork: Project and people management skills to coordinate and collaborate with different parties on a shared plan and see it through to completion.
Problem-Solving: Ability to evaluate various solutions, consider multiple interests and points of view, revisit unresolved issues, seek compromise and work and communicate across languages and cultures.
Given the expectations for maintaining the course in 2022 and preparing for potential 2022 transitions as part of the Movement Strategy implementation process, it is important that we are also clear about two different skill sets critical to committee support at this time. The first skillset is oriented to understanding affiliate dynamics and organizational development patterns to successfully process affiliate applications for recognition; the other is oriented to conflict prevention and intervention support for affiliates in conflict.
Relevant to Affiliate Recognitions
Administration & Attention to detail
Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliation, and similar topics.
Awareness of the affiliates ecosystem and models and understanding of community building, organizational development, and group dynamics
Relevant to Conflict Prevention & Intervention
Communication skills for active listening, clear instruction and turn-taking.
Stress Management skills for maintaining patience and positivity
Emotional intelligence to maintain awareness of emotions of oneself and others to practice empathy, impartiality, and mutual respect.
Facilitation, negotiation, and mediation skills to guide diverse individuals and groups toward cooperation.
Ability to work within a team
Do you have relevant skills and interest to support movement affiliates?
We are looking for people who are excited by the challenge of empowering volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission around the world. In exchange, committee members will gain the experience of supporting their world-wide colleagues to develop their communities as well as personal development in guiding organizational development, facilitating affiliate partnerships, and professional communications.
Selection process
As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2022 member selection process will include a public review and comment period and a self-assessment survey for candidates to share their skills and their experience. This self-assessment information will help the committee to identify the skill sets relevant and supportive to our affiliate support processes. We invite you to apply for membership to the committee and join us in supporting the affiliates. The data shared in the self-assessment will only be made available to the committee and the relevant staff support. The nomination, candidate Q&A, and endorsements will still take place posted on Meta for public review at January 2022 page. Here the global community is welcome to provide comments and feedback about each candidate.
Once the nomination window closes 31 January 2022, the sitting members who are not candidates for re-election in this cycle will deliberate and then vote, taking into account all inputs from the meta page, self-assessment, advisors, Wikimedia Foundation staff and board liaisons, and committee member discussion.
A final decision will be made in late-February 2022, with new members to be notified for onboarding in February.
How to apply
If you are interested in joining the committee, please:
Step 1. Post your application on the nomination page by 31 January 2022. Your application must include the following information:
Your full name and Wikimedia username
A statement describing your relevant education, experience, abilities, skills, knowledge, availability, and motivation for joining the committee.
Step 2. Complete the self-assessment survey between January 1, 2021 and January 31, 2021.
The privacy statement that applies to the survey can be found here.
NOTE: The survey will take 15 mins. Please do not close your browser. If you need a break, you are advised to keep the browser open. In case of losing the link, please reach out to mkaur-ctrwikimedia.org
This survey must be completed before Steps 3 & 4, as it will provide more background as to the type of work and expectations of members of AffCom.
Step 3. Answers the following questions:
NOTE: Questions 1-3 are required for all candidates.
Question 4 & 5 should be answered by those interested in joining the Recognitions subcommittee.
Question 6 & 7 should be answered by those interested in joining the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee.
If you are willing to nominate yourself for both subcommittees, answer all questions.
What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?
AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?
Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?
If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think makes a group of Wikimedians ready to function together as an affiliate?
If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates?
If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe your experience working with conflicts resolution.
If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe how you have helped build consensus and support diversity.
Step 4. Once you have completed the above, send an email announcing your application to affcomwikimedia.org before the application deadline.
