Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), has become Penguin Books fastest selling hardcover fiction title. It is the latest installment in the book series about British secret agent James Bond and was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of late Bond creator Ian Fleming's birthday on May 28, 1908.
Me Cheeta: the Autobiography, written by a ghostwriter, is the autobiography of Cheeta the Chimp who is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest recorded non-human primate at the age of 76. He has appeared in various movie roles which included twelve Tarzan movies and even battled addiction to alcohol and cigars. The book is not published until October 1, but judges for the 2008 Guardian First Book Award were sent a early version and were so impressed that they have included it on the 10-strong longlist.
Stephenie Meyer, who is listed by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people of 2008, has decided not to continue with writing her draft for Midnight Sun after 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript were leaked on the internet.
Current debates
Categories for Discussion has a series of discussions about whether to categorize certain specific types of fictional characters: double agents, dictators, characters with eidetic memory, etc. Advice from any Novels project members would be valuable in assisting them.
WikiProject Media franchises aims to help editors with the coordination of articles within the thousands of media franchises which exist and has requested input from our members. They are currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in our Novel project, they would like to get opinions before implimenting any changes.

Newsletter challenge
Our last newsletter's challenge The Pure Land was completed by our member Maclean25, who also provided us with tipline news for this newsletter.
The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This month's article is Leslie Ann Moore's first book in her fantasy 'Griffin's Daughter' trilogy, which was named by the Independent Book Publishers Association as the 2008 Ben Franklin Award winner for Best First Fiction, Griffin's Daughter. Note: This article was previously deleted due to lack of notability, but that now can be established since winning this award.

Hi, Aleta! A couple of us have been discussing the LGBT people cats at WT:LGBT/CAT. The current discussion on Category:Transgender and transsexual actors from the United States falls directly into the type of cat we're trying to get rid of. Hey, I just read your response there. I'm not really sure what to say at this point. Part (at least) of that is my feelings on it just aren't that strong as compared to yours apparently. Maybe that's because I do mainly see categorizing (right now anyway) as a matter of convenience - making it easy for people to find things. I think that should be the most important criterion generally - does the category make it easier for someone to find the articles for which she/he is looking? Aleta, I placed a (copypaste) and (references) banner on Ron Holloway's page. Heck, I knew Ron, back in 1977-81. But my problem is, on the discussion page, I see a note that someone who edits the page has conflict of interest banner. Oh, my. Please take a look at the page and my comment. Now, I have not one but TWO emails from someone, User: Ronsax saying:
I changed my user preferences to no email, but am not sure how to proceed. The page IS a mess. And, I didn't answer the email. I found where to report it as a possible copyright infringement: Wikipedia:Copyright problems. I would have gone ahead and added it, but it needs to be listed with the page that it might be copying. Since you have gotten the emails from Ronsax saying the other page is actually the copy, that information needs to be reported as well. Basically, I'd list there exactly what you have put here, but with the addition of the link to the other page in question. It may be that if he adds to the other page a statement that it is copied from Wikipedia that it would be enough to clear up the problem. I'm not an expert in copyright issues, however, and am not certain. I've added the article to my watchlist; please keep me in the loop! Aleta, did you contact him? Would you please do it? Just to tell him that he must place the information that the website info on Ron Holloway is from the Wikipedia. (Isn't it creepy when you look something up on some other website, and find your own work there-- like blogs or You tube or whatever? And they do it so quickly!) He keeps sending the emails, b/c he now has my email address, and I didn't want to answer THEM, since it would be admitting that I do check that particular email addy. I'm up to 6 emails about it. We went through this with the Management team for Josh Klinghoffer, back when I didn't even have a User Name, and was working on the John Frusciante page with only an ISP address. Thanks for helping. Did you know you can answer me here? I know it's stressful with an admin. working over your shoulder, but I'll help you pull those banners down. I take it you are new at this, so just leave me a note. No hard feelings, we just need to know where this stands. --leahtwosaints (talk) 09:50, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Leah! How are you? Wow, you and I knew each other around the late '70's into the early eighties! (I saw where you said that.) I know you're in my corner and I don't mind your help at all. Yes, I'm definitely new at this but I enjoy working on websites so I learn very fast. I'm sorry if my sending you emails upset you. I didn't mean to do that which is why none of those emails contained any anger. I was disturbed because I realized YOU thought someone was breaching copyright laws. Imagine my horror when that came across my mind- knowing I had composed those words on my Official site as well as the Wiki page. I was horrorfied because I knew I am not by any means guilty of that! I was trying to figure out some way to let you know what was REALLY behind the similarity in the language. I DON'T know your email address. When I went to your Talk page there is a link that reads "email this user" or something like that. THAT is how I was able to email you. You were being emailed by me but I had no idea what address those emails were going to. Sorry about the number(6 you said) of emails fired off very rapidly. I was desperate to prove my innocence. I haven't sent you any emails since Monday night. All of those emails were sent- one behind the other because I kept thinking of different things I wanted you to know. I very much want to have an accurate, factual page on Wikipedia that meets Wikipedia's standards. I'm not interested in using it to promote myself. I've had a very productive career playing with some historic figures like Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Scott-Heron, the Allman Brothers Band, Taj Mahal, John Hiatt, Delbert McClinton, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Dr. John and the list literally goes on. However, if you notice I don't mention all of these names. I only mention artists that I have an ongoing relationship with. There are MANY details I mention on my "Official" site that I know I cannot mention on the Wiki site.
I had already thought of putting "From Wikipedia" at the top of my "Official Website" bio but I realized it wouldn't be altogether true because if you really scrutinize each paragraph the details and the TYPES of details vary GREATLY from one another. There are also headings and paragraphs on the Wiki article that don't exist on my "Official" bio. For instance on my Official bio there are no headings or paragraphs on Little Feat, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Gregg Allman or Susan Tedeschi. My "Official" website bio is grossly BEHIND when it comes to updated activity. YEARS behind! Of course SOME of the wording has been brought up to speed because once I "perfected" the language on Wikipedia I couldn't stand to read the more clumsy language of earlier drafts. Anyway, on closer scrutiny I think you will find if you compare my "Official" bio to the Wikipedia article about HALF the wording of each paragraph is written verbatim. The two versions differ substantially. This is why I don't really feel comfortable posting "From Wikipedia".
Anyway, thank you for your offer to "help you pull those banners down". It breaks my heart to look at those banners on my page. I'd very much like to improve the article so they can be removed! Help me, Leah--HELP ME!!! Haha! Certainly there are no hard feelings! If you can help me I'll be forever grateful. You would be my automatic guest to any show you cared to attend. (That's not bribery!) Tell me what to do to bring the quality to an acceptable level and I'll do it!
OK, I'm going to sign off because this is long.
Thank you, Leah and a HUGE THANKS to Aleta for her very helpful edit!
Sincerely,
Ron
Leah, I just noticed this message you left:
OK, Ronsax, first, this has nothing to do with Root Boy Slim, although I met Ron through his work with him when I was a teenager, that is true. The issue is that if you wrote everything for his website, it now must be listed on that website (his) too; that all the information was created here on the wikipedia. We cannot have mirror websites. This is an encyclopedia! Am I speaking to Ron himself? Or another person? I will help you with the work on this article if you wish, so we can pull these banners down, but I need to know your ties to Ron Holloway or whatever bands he's worked with- I'm familiar with several. You can leave a note on my talk page. I saw all the time consuming work you have put into the article, and that's why I didn't do anything foolish like delete it, but you really need to clarify your ties to Ron and your intentions with the website. If this is your first article, let me know. Thanks. --leahtwosaints (talk) 09:45, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I didn't answer this message directly because I just noticed it a few minutes ago. First of all anyone who I met back then in the context of Root Boy Slim's band is AUTOMATICALLY a FRIEND! That's HUGE that you liked Slim and you and I met back then. You and I AUTOMATICALLY have a meaningful bond. I wonder if I'd recognize you if I saw you, Leah. This is Ron or Ronsax. It's ME Leah. :-) Your friend from all those years ago. Back then I used to jam or sit in with a LOT of D.C. bands. I was actually a member of the Sex Change Band of course but I also used to sit in with Babe, Catfish Hodge, Jr. Cline, Dr. Goodfoot and the Toxic Socks, Bill Holland, Danny Gatton, Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band, Mike Cotter and others. The venues back then were the Psychedelly, the Childe Harolde, Desperados, The Cellar Door, the Bayou, the Crazy Horse, etc. Convinced yet, my dear? Haha! Yes, this is my very first article here on Wikipedia and I appreciate the significance of this medium. I am honored to have such an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution! One thing Leah; this is by no means a mirror of my other website for so MANY reasons. Look closer. Only SOME of the sentences from each paragraph are verbatim. The content of each paragraph on my "Official" site veers away from the content of the Wiki article. Case in point:
* 2nd paragraph from my "Official" site:
In the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz, renowned jazz critic Ira Gitler describes Ron Holloway as "a bear-down-hard-bopper who can blow authentic R&B, and croon a ballad with warm, blue feeling." While true, this only begins to touch upon the versatility of the tenor saxophonist! The quest for complete expression has been a hallmark of Ron Holloway's music from the beginning. Born August 24th, 1953, Ron grew up in a household where listening to jazz was a favorite pastime. His parents, Winston and Marjorie Holloway were, and remain avid jazz listeners. "My parents met while attending Howard University, in Washington, D.C. They both loved jazz and would frequently go to concerts at the Howard Theatre.
* Corresponding paragraph from Wikipedia as it originally appeared for many months:
Ronald Edward "Ron" Holloway (born August 24, 1953 in Washington, D.C.) is an American tenor saxophonist known for his ability to adapt to virtually any musical environment. In the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz renowned jazz critic Ira Gitler describes Ron Holloway as "a bear-down-hard-bopper who can blow authentic R&B and croon a ballad with warm, blue feeling."
* As the paragraph currently appears (after your contribution):
Ronald Edward "Ron" Holloway, born August 24, 1953 in Washington, D.C., is an American tenor saxophonist known for his ability to adapt to a variety of musical genres. In the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz [1] jazz critic Ira Gitler describes Holloway as "a bear-down-hard-bopper who can blow authentic R&B and croon a ballad with warm, blue feeling."[2]
These 3 versions share SOME of the same wording...By necessity the quote from Ira Gitler but they are fundamentally different. This holds true for each and every paragraph if you carefully A-B the articles. By no means is one a carbon copy of the other.

First of all thank you so much for helping me clean up the article and bring it into an area of acceptability. I still have all of the newspaper articles and a long chapter in a book to back up everything in the article. You are correct when you point out the original Wiki article was started by a fan. Actually, by fans I don't personally KNOW! The couple had come home from one of my performances and decided they wanted to do it. I was totally surprised when I learned of the articles existence. I read it and I realized how SKETCHY is was. This kind of disturbed me. I didn't want sketchy, incomplete pieces out there. This is why I decided to try and create a piece that is based on provable, factual details. I welcome your input because I want to do this correctly or objectively. I'm not interested in creating a "promotional" piece as you rightly pointed out. You have done an excellent job of cleaning up some things! You have done so without losing the meaning of my original language and you retained the chronology of the events. I couldn't wish for more than that!

Hey Aleta, As you can tell, the writer IS Ron Holloway, who I really do know, and I offered to mentor him here as best I can. He says he has clippings from newspaper articles, which are sorely needed for references. I've begun to re-write the article into third person, as a biographical piece, and he's completely amenable to the wikipedia demands, so it looks like a positive ending to my fears. I removed the copyvio banner from the page, found in some of his attempts at non in-line refs some real references, good ones, and am beginning to teach him. He played and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, which is mind-blowing. He was awfully young then to play with the greats, but it's well documented. And of all things, I'd been working on both Derek Trucks, The Derek Trucks Band, and Derek's wife, Susan Tedeschi and her band. Ron is currently in Susan's band. What a crazy world, huh? He's going to try to get some photos for the bands I listed above to upload into the Wikimedia Commons, and several editors have offered to help with this page, so it looks like it may be a happy ending. I told him, if I run into problems or whatever, you are the admin. I'll be turning to. OK? :) --leahtwosaints (talk) 23:39, 3 October 2008 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2008-10-03T23:39:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2008-10-03T23:39:00.000Z-To_keep_you_in_the_loop","replies":[]}}-->
Leah, I'm glad this is going so well. I see that he's very amenable to learning the WP culture, and that y'all are working together happily. By all means, if there is anything I can help either of you with, let me know! :) Right now, it's late and I should already be asleep, so I'm signing off for now... AletaSing

Thanks Aleta, I actually spoke to him, (since he was playing with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, who are husband and wife, and merge their bands into the "Soul Stew Revival"-- and they played the same Washington D.C. area where I live, so he was in town.. He's providing me with a bunch of newspaper clippings and so forth -not to mention books that have chapters on him, so I can do the article properly along with him and avoid POV issues. For some reason, User:Keeper is hanging up the mop, or the computer in WikiLand, which is a shame b/c he was also willing to assist in this sometime ago. Glad though that it has had, as you'd say, a happy ending, so, there it is. :) --leahtwosaints (talk) 21:22, 5 October 2008 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2008-10-05T21:22:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2008-10-05T21:22:00.000Z-To_keep_you_in_the_loop","replies":[]}}-->

Nominations have now commenced for Coordinator Candidates for the Novels Project. Any member of the project may nominate themselves. Nominations close on October 27, so if you wish to run make sure you add your name before then. Details on the election process and the role of Coordinators can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Coordinators/October 2008. The voting and question phase of the election will open on October 28 and end November 28.
After the recent roll call, the Novels Project now has 74 active members.
15 positions still remain unfilled at the Job Centre, members who are interested are encouraged to apply.
Yllosubmarine (talk·contribs) has been a member of the Novels WikiProject for nearly two years, and a coordinator since May. Aside from her work outside the project (including four FAs and six GAs in various areas), she has been active in the Project's Assessment and Peer Review departments. She hopes to continue in these roles as well as help encourage more activity and community research within the Project. With the upcoming coordinator election, she hopes that others will volunteer to become more active in their roles as Project members so that we can continue to provide quality articles to the readers of this encyclopedia.
On the advice of Coordinator Maria, the newsletter is now only distributed to active listed members of the Novels Project. A new section has started with this issue called 'In Focus', which will feature various members and task forces each month.
Members are requested to post any news items to the Tip Line (found above) to make sure it reaches the next newsletter before closing date, which is always the last day of the preceding month. Any task force news should be added by the coordinator of that task force. Having news items helps inform members of what is happening at the various task forces and so can be a way of encouraging more membership and participation.
Editors are required to assist with the newsletter for Task Force News and Peer Reviews & Assessments News, which involves the gathering of news items from the main project and the various task forces. These positions may be applied for at the Job Centre.
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Steppenwolf (novel). The next collaboration is due for selection on 1 November, 2008 so cast your vote.

I see you nominated this article for deletion in August. It seems to be back, once more footnoted to the sole source that was rejected by the Reliable Sources board months ago (Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_10#Masculinity_for_Boys). What is the situation here? As I understand he was allowed to develop it in his user-space to obtain reliable sources. The only source is his roundly rejected old favourite. A quick google search also clearly indicates that there is no substantial body of literature that uses "heterosexualization" in this way. Mostly, it's used to mean somthing quite different. Yes, the previous version was userfied to User:Masculinity/Heterosexualization, where nothing at all has happened. Check the history of that one.) Instead, he's just created a new stub. At the very least, other uses of the term need to be discussed, else we shouldn't have it at all. Google scholar reveals that a significant number of articles do use the word "heterosexualization", but most seem to use it to mean nothing more than "removing homosexuality" [1]. For example the article on lesbians in mainstream cinema discusses the fact that most "lesbian" scenes are not designed to show actual lesbian life, but to appeal to heterosexuals in the audience. Though the word appears in a few article titles, it does not seem to be a significant concept in its own right. I don't really think there is enough there to justify an article. The definition used in the article - which is presented as undisputed fact - seems to be unique to user:Masculinity's source, which has already been deemed unreliable by the community. Why was this article deleted. Mitchell Henderson truly was a 13 year old boy who committed suicide after losing his iPod and was called "an hero" for it. Google it yourself. "From this, the meme "an hero" was born." Given that there is nothing unusual about the phrase "an hero", this did not sound very credible. There were absolutely no references given. It therefore appeared to be total vandalism. If there are reliable sources that discuss this case, perhaps a useful article can be written about this person. As it was, there was not enough information to make that a useful article. I added the article for the football (soccer) player named Andrei Smirnov and noticed that the name is redlinked from many other unrelated articles. I don't have the expertise to add articles on other Andrei Smirnovs listed, but to the best of my knowledge Andrei Smirnov the filmmaker is quite notable in Russia (the film linked was sent for Oscar consideration by the Russian academy) and Andrei Smirnov the swimmer won an Olympic medal in 1976, so at least those two warrant a Wiki article. I changed the links in the respective articles to point to those new suggested pages instead of pointing to the disambiguation page, let's hope those pages get created. Until those pages do get created, I'm not sure whether disambiguation is warranted or not... Doesn't matter either way I guess if there's only one non-redlinked option. Hi, I have been around this project for quite some time now. Bit of a hiatus earlier this year, but back now just contributing. The Novels WikiProject wasn't started by me but my interest in the subject initially attracted me to what was here. It has developed substantially in the last few years and now takes in all forms of Narrative Prose Fiction within its scope. We are about the content not the format of the prose so WP:Books differs a little in that an implied format is entailed; also they can also focus more clearly on non-fiction. WP:Literature are the "new boys on the block" and are a little more focused on the "quality" aspects of literature, and again they have less emphasis on pure fiction and the prose aspect. Our biggest problem is to maintain a certain focus of interest across such a broad subject area and we need workers who can develop task forces, teams for assessment, teams for peer review and so much more. "So much to do, so little time, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late" to misquote from Alice in Wonderland.

Over the last month I have been working on a portal for our project. So am happy to announce that the Novels Portal is now up and running.
Boylo: Thank you for getting this newsletter back on its feet and going again. No Boylo equals no Novels Portal...heck, without you, we wouldn't have had a newsletter for these past months...so, for all of the members of the Novels WikiProject, I want to thank you for the time and effort you have put into this project, and I wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. Thanks, pal.
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Novel. As this is our Project's premier article, all members are asked to assist. The next collaboration is due for selection on 21 November, 2008 so cast your vote.
Recently a new worklist had been created and quietly arrived, the Cleanup listing which gives a fairly comprehensive hit list of "novels" related articles that have been tagged for something or other.
Since then a new Article alerts listing has also been added of more topic and "urgent" items worthy of our attention.

Wake up WP:LGBT! It's time to kick in gear and get some things done!
Project News
Wake up!
I say this to myself as much as I say it to all of us. I work a lot by myself or with individual editors who spend time at Featured Article Candidates. It seems on November 5 a fog was lifted off my brain that helped me realize that we have massive potential in this project to get things done. Take this allegory, for instance: On Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1980, my 10th-grade American history teacher started class by unfurling The New York Times. She pointed to its triple banner headline: “Reagan Easily Beats Carter; Republicans Gain in Congress; D’Amato and Dodd are Victors.” “Save this paper,” she told us. “This is the start of a whole new era.”Judith Warner from The New York Times
It definitely seems a start to a whole new era now. If planets align correctly to remind us that whatever advances we may have made in electing what appears to be an extraordinary president in the US, the moons that revolve around those planets also serve to illustrate it's not that simple. Florida, Arizona, and California all appear to have banned same sex marriage. As someone who was married in California and lives in Florida, this is particularly poignant. We seem to be at the juncture of two converging paths. If we maximize our efforts and take the right ones, we might just be able to affect some change for ourselves.
Though what we do is an interesting hobby for some, we have the power to make a difference. California's ballot initiative to ban gay marriage was a fierce fight. It's being challenged right now, but just look at how Wikipedia played a role in that: in October 2008, 360,238 people read its article. On November 5, an astounding 467,000 people read it. I commend the editors who work on that article—both those who support and oppose it. A look at the talk page shows a concerted effort to keep it civil and accurate.
What can we do?
How do you fight ignorance? With information. That's what Wikipedia is for. This project is overwhelming with 8,576 articles in its scope. We can continue to work piecemeal as we have in the past, or we can focus on goals. These are examples of areas we can concentrate on.
Current political events
LGBT Media and Literature
LGBT History
Sex and sexuality
Articles about political issues in the US and around the world that have been especially relevant within the past 5 years
Depictions of LGBT people and issues on television, film, newspapers, magazines
Topics about gay rights activism and the opposition to it
There are more than 8,000 articles to work on. Can we build a list of priorities? Can we build enough enthusiasm to work on these? What if we had editors who oversaw progress in these areas and reported to the talk page or in the newsletter? Surely someone here wants to report on the progress of sex articles.
Tony Perkins (irony) from the conservative Family Research Councilwas heartened by the recent passages of gay marriage bans. The Republican Party is without direction. What's going to take the place of a moderate voice will not be pleasant to our ears. Watching and improving articles of subjects that have opposed gay rights in the past will be of vital importance very soon, I predict.
But WP:LGBT is not a very active project

Offer research materials, copy editing, ideas, and support to your fellow editors.
Keep the project talk page informed of problems and discussions we should know about.
Proposal: Put Importance Levels on articles
If this was decided long before I was a member, maybe it's time to revisit it. Other WikiProjects, such as WP:Novels determine that some subjects have an importance category: Top, High, Mid, Low, or None (undetermined). If we decide that our most core articles, it might help to organize which articles to address first. Top importance, for example, would be Gay, Homosexual, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Sappho, Oscar Wilde, Stonewall riots, for example. High importance would be Homosexuality and psychology, Harvey Milk, Mattachine Society, Harry Hay, or Daughters of Bilitis, and so on. This can be a matter of discussion, or perhaps we could have someone in charge of determining these levels for all the articles we have tagged.
These are the editors I've seen working (and I know I'm forgetting a few). There's more of you out there I haven't seen. Some of you are new. We need all of you. Please help.
Miami, January 18, 1977 after the gay rights ordinance was passed: While Bryant and the others were creating the beginnings of the repeal effort, (gay activists) Basker, Campbell, Kunst, and the other (gay rights) ordinance supporters congratulated themselves on their success and then quickly disbanded... There was no organized recognition or celebration of the victory. As one activist remembered, "We just went home." They had little idea of the battle that was before them. - Fred Fejes in Gay Rights and Moral Panic, 2008

Hey Aleta, can you take a peek at the Richie Havens article, and evaluate it-- it says it's a Stub, or Start, but has been added to, so maybe it needs upgrading. Thanks, but I'm truly a dingbat. Trying to figure out what all that small print on the back of pages' talk page is COMPLETELY confusing. The best I can get to is some place where you gotta put your article in some long list. Is that how it's supposed to be??! Meanwhile, I once again need your help with ranking another page. Paul Samwell-Smith-- can you evaluate it and tell me exactly what you did? This one is certainly not a stub any longer! I think you're making it harder than it really is. :) You just need to edit the talk page of the article itself. If the article has already been added to the project, there is a template for the project, and you can update the assessment very easily. In the case above, on Talk:Paul Samwell-Smith was the following code:
I changed the word Stub to Start, and the update is done. Try it! :) AletaSing19:35, 23 November 2008 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2008-11-23T19:35:00.000Z","author":"Aleta","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Aleta-2008-11-23T19:35:00.000Z-Admin_Question","replies":[]}}-->

Aleta, In attempting to add information to the article on John Pease, someone(s?) has continued to vandalize it WAYYYY beyond what is typically seen. It's an IP address: User talk:207.28.98.189. Whomever it is has a huge page full of warnings on that talk page, but continues on despite warnings of every kind! It's not just the John Pease article either-- multiple vandalized pages that just keep on coming, despite "last chance" warnings. I am asking you to ban their ability to edit. RE: Charlaine Harris page - I still think ISBNs are only useful to publishers and booksellers, and not really encyclopaedic, especially as they only identify an edition, not a book as such. I wouldn't like to see them on author pages in general. However, I did feel a qualm about wiping out someone's work, so the footnotes are a good compromise. I do own an account with Wikipedia, I just don't use it beyond what is absolutely necessary. I sometimes go and re-edit my contributions to a talk page if I realize I erred, sometimes I have to make several revisions. If this debate continues to rage on, I might log in. I don't mind being identified by my IP address most of the time. It doesn't do much harm to me so long as I play by the rules. I've been part of Wikipedia for a good couple of years now but this is by far the biggest project I'm yet to be associated with. That answer things for you?

The TALK PAGE has become semi-protected without any notification of any kind and there was nothing wrong happening. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think this is another attempt by Collect to undermine and silence the opposition. I (this is Alan) provided an extremely valid counterargument to him yesterday and after failing to respond and turning to other debates, I find the page has coincidentally become protected. That has to be some sort of violation. For that matter, Collect outright exaggerated the number of hits for "Joe the Plumber" with the word nickname on Google: it's maybe 1/9th the total of what he claimed it to be and most of the search results I scanned were either different news outlets using the same exact words or stuff that's unrelated. I even tried without quotation marks and it still failed to produce nearly as many search results as Collect purported there to be. That too has to be a violation of some kind. Could you please unlock the page and find out who did it (I can only imagine it was Collect)

Heyy! Those photos came up well. However, now other photographers are responding. I need the same kind of help to upload these. Would you help with these here? APK seems like he's not in. These are sorely needed mostly for pages with no photos. Will you help? Here's Rick Danko with Paul Butterfield both could really use the photos; I wonder if, for one, the photo can be sliced in half? Or does that violate the GFDL? Once I learn how to upload stuff from Flickr (though I suspect I'd still need an Admin or someone else to check that I broke no copyright) I'll be glad to do it. But I really appreciate your help. It really bugs me to work on articles with no photo; almost looks like I never get anything accomplished! :Somehow the links didn't come through that I left on APK's talk page yesterday, so here again, for Rick Danko with Paul Butterfield:

Hi Aleta,
I have found some great photos on Flickr which the photographers are willing to share with us! However, if they do not upload them to Creative Commons themselves, us lowly editors must have an Admin. verify that they have given consent for us to do so. If you are not up to it, can you please refer me to another Admin? We really need some of these photos, like Ry Cooder, and some other great ones. Please, let me know!! --leahtwosaints (talk) 22:36, 9 January 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-01-09T22:36:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-09T22:36:00.000Z-Happy_to_ask_your_assistance_(easy_one?)","replies":["c-Aleta-2009-01-10T18:21:00.000Z-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-09T22:36:00.000Z"]}}-->

OK, the first set is from a photographer who can't figure out how to upload photos of his set, "Counting Crows @ Ancienne Bruxelles" from July 3, 2008. (I don't know how to upload either.. I'm hoping YOU do..but we have his happy permission: here are the ones I asked for of 1) the band, 2) David Immerglück, on guitar 3)Dan Vickery (the second two are band members)
[9], [10], [11] The owner's name is Rutger Hesseling- and you can see they are good. If you need to email me for his email of consent I will send you my email address.
Another photo of David Lindley is here from "Art Guy", who also, if you click the Creative Commons link at the bottom of the page, gives permission- in fact, he gave me permission for all 4 of his photos, but I don't see the GFDL approval on the others yet. See: [12] (his photo set is called "In Concert". If you can help with those it would make me very happy :)!!
--I screwed up, and first, said the third Counting Crows photo is of another band member. It's of Dan Vickery, another guitarist. Also, someone actually redirected a page for him to the band page. He has no page. How to take that link out from the top of the page? --leahtwosaints (talk) 16:29, 11 January 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-01-11T16:29:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-11T16:29:00.000Z-Happy_to_ask_your_assistance_(easy_one?)","replies":["c-AgnosticPreachersKid-2009-01-11T16:39:00.000Z-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-11T16:29:00.000Z"]}}-->

Yes, he was wonderful. I just now need someone with half his kindness and knowledge for these other photos.. the number is lining up! What he did was upload them first to my own talk page, and then to the Wikimedia Commons. At the bottom of EVERY page in Flickr, is an explanation to the photographer of how to designate photos as being OK for non-commercial use, only for this purpose, and giving them attribution as owners of the photo. It's the uploading part I don't "get" yet.. some of the photographers do get it, some don't, though there is an upload tool both there and in the Commons- in theory, the photographer should really upload it, but it breaks no laws for you to do so as long as they've designated the photo OK to use. (I always contact them, anyway). --leahtwosaints (talk) 20:52, 17 January 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-01-17T20:52:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-17T20:52:00.000Z-Happy_to_ask_your_assistance_(easy_one?)","replies":["c-Aleta-2009-01-20T21:56:00.000Z-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-17T20:52:00.000Z"]}}-->

Q: I made a page for Dan Vickrey with the help of APK, but don't understand how to place a biography tag on the talk sheet. What IS "nested" anyway?! --leahtwosaints (talk) 01:15, 30 January 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-01-30T01:15:00.000Z","author":"Leahtwosaints","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-30T01:15:00.000Z-Q_&_A?","replies":["c-Aleta-2009-01-30T17:59:00.000Z-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-30T01:15:00.000Z"]}}-->
A: The easiest thing to do (what I always do) is go to Template:WPBiography/doc and copy what is in the box, paste it into the talk page, and then delete what is irrelevant. I have done this now with Talk:Dan Vickrey, so you can look at that code. Nesting is only relevant when there are multiple banners on a page, so don't worry about it yet. Just get down the basic banner use first, and worry about nesting later if a particular talk page needs it. (You've probably seen some pages where only part of the banner shows at first; those have been nested.) Does this help? :) AletaSing17:59, 30 January 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-01-30T17:59:00.000Z","author":"Aleta","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Aleta-2009-01-30T17:59:00.000Z-Leahtwosaints-2009-01-30T01:15:00.000Z","replies":["c-Leahtwosaints-2009-02-10T01:16:00.000Z-Aleta-2009-01-30T17:59:00.000Z"]}}-->

From what I understand, this is similar to The Iliad or The Odyssey -- all are tales/stories that have been published in book format, but are technically not novels. However, if a novel based on the tale is in some way separately notable and deserving of an article, I would count that as under the project. That's why I removed the Novel WikiProject tag. BTW, someone questioned your assessment at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Assessment, which is how I was led there. I would say not. Again, the concept of "novel" didn't exist eight hundred years ago, and although it may have been published in novel format since then, the article is for the tale itself. Please refer to Puerto Rico Department of Education for veracity. Speedy deletion was suggested after creator added the link to a blog. Adding this obeyed to the article being orphaned. Advertising would qualify for asking/suggesting readers were to find the books, etc. Article speaks about a very real person who has contributed to Puerto Rican letters, literary genres and is verifiable. Children's book s by this author have been acquired by the Puerto Rico Department of Education, and the Cronicas del Barrio Saga is at present in negotiations for comercial movies both in Hispanic and American markets.. Please verify. Links that may not be useful have been deleted, unless you consider they should be present.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Writersaga (talk • contribs)
I'm not sure what you are asking me to do. The article has not been speedily deleted, but the possibilty of deletion is being discussed in AfD. I suggest you comment in that page if you wish to prevent deletion. I should point out that just because a person is a real author, she is not automatically considered "notable" in WP terms. This is a topic about which I do not know anything, and I think I made the most minor of formatting changes to clean up the way the article looks. As you can see, this is about as bare-bones of a newsletter as you can get. The reason for this is that the newsletter has and will be inactive, but we wanted to get a last one out detailing the current state of our project. The truth is that WP:NOVELS is in bad shape. Only a few editors are active in editing inside of our project. Our Peer Review section, this newsletter, our task forces, and our collaboration center are all dead; although a collab is picked each month, not a lot of work seems to occur.
Out of these ashes, we are proposing that the project start an A-class review system. This will hopefully bring people together for reviewing, and will perhaps get the project some sorely-needed attention from others who can come in and help rehabilitate it. Final plans have not been established, but we will see about getting a mass message out to all of the project members if/when it is set up; discussion of this can be conducted on the General Forum.
This newsletter will probably be the last we will have for a long time, as neither Ed nor Kevinalewis have the time to create these every month. However, if any editor is willing to step up and create one, we would be glad to assist you in making it up.
If you don't want to create a newsletter, but would still like to help, there are plenty of things that can be done. As detailed on the right, the Novels Peer Review section has four articles needing attention, but only one review has been done; one from May, one from November, and one from December have not had any comments left on them. Please consider helping out there; even a 15-minute review would help.
Talk between Kevinalewis and the_ed17, the two project coordinators, has led to us deciding to suspend elections for coordinators indefinitely. With the exceedingly low amount of participation in the last elections (five total votes), we do not feel that it is worth it to try to set up another election.
20 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only do a position for a short time.
Collaboration of the Month
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Shantaram (novel). The next collaboration is due for selection in April, so cast your vote.
Peer review and assessment news
Peer Reviews are still open for four articles – Sector General, Petals of Blood, Scenes of Clerical Life, and Flowers for Algernon. Feel free to submit any novel-related article that you are working on for review, but please consider stopping by and reviewing an article; we need more reviewers for our articles (there is a PR that has been open since May)!
Recently a new worklist had been created and quietly arrived, the Cleanup listing which gives a fairly comprehensive hit list of "novels" related articles that have been tagged for something or other.
Since then a new Article alerts listing has also been added of more topic and "urgent" items worthy of our attention.

I was asking because I genuinely wanted to know whether you have you prove the date of birth because so many entries don't have ref against DOB, e.g. Jimmy carter, Richard Branson and Terry Gilliam. OK Louis Armstrong does but that's because even he wasn't sure when he was born. Then I thought, unless you can give an actual scan of the person's birth certificate, how do you prove anyone's DOB? 'Ref a reputable newspaper article that states the DOB', I hear you say. Well fine, but have they seen the birth certificate or is their info as unreliable as everyone else's. I think the latter. Ah, ok I see your question/point. As to that, well, I suppose the potentially flip-sounding, but best-we-can-do, answer is that WP is about verifiability rather than truth. You are right, just because the NYTimes, for instance, says John Doe was born on a certain day, it is not necessarily true. It is however the best we can do. If there is a discrepancy - the NYTimes says one day, and the London Times says another - we say that with citations to both. I see you are a Monty Python fan. Cool, so am I!! I have been helping out the production company making this documentary to mark their 40th anniv [13] by trying to find fans, as well as people who hate Monty Python, to be interviewed for the program, or for them to be sent a DV tape so they can record a video diary about their love/hate of it. I have been finding some people on Twitter but when I saw your 'I am a Monty Python fan' badge, it made me realise that WP could be a good source of potential interviewees. So what's the easiest way to reach all those with that badge on their userpage, or at least, how do I do a search which would show me all those WP editors who are Python fans? Hi. I'm thinking of prodding Christianity in Haiti as OR, badly referenced and a general mess, like all the other stuff created by this curious "project". I'd welcome a second opinion because I'm working my way through all their articles and I want to be sure my perspective isn't skewed. I managed to salvage Jewish clothing by a wholesale rewrite but I can't see my way through to sorting out Christianity in Haiti in the same way. What do you think? andy (talk) 08:21, 22 March 2009 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2009-03-22T08:21:00.000Z","author":"Andyjsmith","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Andyjsmith-2009-03-22T08:21:00.000Z-Another_\"school_project\"","replies":["c-Aleta-2009-03-22T13:06:00.000Z-Andyjsmith-2009-03-22T08:21:00.000Z"],"displayName":"andy"}}-->
Go ahead and take it to afd as well. Then when it gets deleted, no one can say there wasn't concensus to do it. I had thought Jewish clothing might be salvageable with much work, but it may be the only one of the bunch. Actually, there's a stub or two that could probably stay. Ok, maybe I was too hasty in reverting it, but I am serious about having the article protected, it gets way too many edits by exthusiastic fans who have no interest in keeping the article encyclopaedic.

It is a mess, no doubt. I'm not sure if protection is what's needed or what exactly is. I could protect it, but since I'm unsure about it, I'm not going to do so. I suggest posting at WP:RFPP. Regarding: "Simple copyedits they may have been, but you need not do them."
I understood this to mean, although they were simple copyedits, I didn't need to make them (ie. they weren't necessary). Given your response to my correction, I think you may have meant to say: I need to avoid making them (ie need to NOT do them)? I'm sorry I misunderstood. The grammar is off in that sentence and I was confused. Sorry my effort to fix it didn't work out and I'm sorry for the confusion.
As far as correcting typos, I hesitate to name names but there are numerous editors (including admins) who appreciate these corrections being made. I'm just one of the rogue editors who tries to help out. This is a wiki after all and we're meant to collaborate. So showing common courtesy and decency towards one another is a good thing. Assuming good faith is also a key guideline. No need to leave further messages on my page thanks, I've had quite enough from you and your gang of bobbleheads. Thank you very much. Cheers. Uh huh. If I had a little spelling error, I personally would not mind its being corrected. However, not everyone feels the same way, it is against protocol, and in the instance in question, you entirely changed the wording (even if you had preserved the meaning, which you did not). My dear lady, I'm afraid the meaning of your statement wasn't clear. I suspect most readers will understand it to mean what I thought it did. "Need not do them" is not the same a "do not do them". That looks more like it! A little weird, but probably not bad. As for the vote... I'm just watching for now how things develop. I think it's probably headed towards a keep decision anyway regardless of if I change my merge. It is a little weird, and it is not bad (my 3-yr old daughter liked it--but she's a bacon maniac, I am embarrassed to say). As you can tell from the shine, it's ganache, which I thought would be preferable over simply dipping it in melted chocolate. But next time I'm using some really expensive, really good chocolate, not that *&^% from the supermarket. And I hope you're right about the AfD. A lot of hard work went into that article (almost none of it mine) and I do believe in its viability and notability. Oh, we have something in common: I also am a firm, and staunch, and diligent proponent of the serial comma! I must say, as a bacon lover and as a chocolate lover..
