Maurice Daly (1849 – June 29, 1932[2]), sometimes called "The Father of Balkline", was a top player of carom billiards during his era. Born in Manhattan, Daly was


Daly became American cushion caroms champion in 1883.[3][footnote 1]

About a year before his death, at 82 Daly took a post as instructor at The New York Athletic Club and had informed the National Billiard Association that he wanted to be among the contestants if any cushion carom or "red ball" tournaments were held.[4] (same cite--he converted Hoppe from a pocket billiardist into a balkline player.) hmmm Cite lists 83 but clearly 82 since died a little over a year later

Death

Daly died on June 29, 1932 at the home of his daughter, Alicea O'Gorman in Pelham, New York.[2] of "complications of ailments."[1] He was survived by her and a son, Maurice Daly, Jr.[2]

    In cushion caroms, the object of play is to score points by caroming one's cue ball off of both object balls with at least one rail being struck before the cue ball's hit on the second object ball.[5] Cushion caroms was only played professionally for a short time during the era, and Daly was its last champion for many years. The next professional championship at the game was not held until 1933, won by Daly's former pupil, Willie Hoppe, who held the title for 11 years thereafter.[3]
