Tour de France sourcing 28-44

Edge, how's it goin'? I was looking through the older Tour de France articles and I saw that the memoire du cyclisme site domain has expired and that data is no longer on the site. I noticed they are archived so this isn't that big of an issue. However, if you were in need of some information for the races between 1928 and 1944, Il Littorale provides some great information with high quality newspaper scans. here is the link. You probably knew of these two things already, but I thought I would just point it out. That newspaper has been much help for my efforts on the Giro yearly articles and they should be able to benefit you as well. Disc Wheel (Talk + Tontributions) 06:14, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the memoire du cyclisme site still exists, but it has moved to [1]. Unfortunately, older Tour info now requires subscription, so I haven't taken up the task yet to move these urls. Do you have any plans to get an article to GA or FA status? If you do, let me know, then I'll see if I can help there. --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 06:34, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhh okay, I see. I really want to see what they have on the Giro, but because of the subscription I can't. As for what I'm working on, I currently have the 1988 Giro d'Italia up for FAN and I am also working on the 1912 Giro d'Italia to get it to GA status soon... that is it really. Also I am considering getting all the yearly articles that a Grand Tour double was done to GA, but that might be a project for the future. You working on anything in particular? Disc Wheel (Talk + Tontributions) 17:59, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have nothing special that I work on... I still have the long-term goal to improve all Tour articles up to at least C-class, but at the moment I am not really working on that. Sometimes I see something that I find interesting and I think needs improvement (such as the points classification in early Vueltas recently), and then I work on it, but that is not really planned... --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 09:52, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, I have the same aspiration but with the Giro articles, but I am just worn out by doing the same basic additions right now. Hopefully the drive and motivation will come back. Disc Wheel (Talk + Tontributions) 15:37, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Edge. I was wondering if you could check the Dutch newspapers you use for cycling articles for information about doping in the 1987 Giro d'Italia. I'm planning on taking that article to FA now and doping is the only subject I cannot for the life of me find anything on for the edition. El Mundo, El Pais, La Repubblica and LA Stampa have turned up nothing on the subject. I also haven't found anything saying that there were no doping cases in the 1987 giro, so I'm in a pickle. Disc Wheel (Talk + Tontributions) 16:53, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I looked for this, but was also unable to find anything... No source that gives a positive doping result, but also no source that explicitly says there was none. --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 20:07, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tour

Hope all is well friend. Can I update and add to your Tour articles structure list? Over the past couple of days I've been on a mission to sort them all out, based on the recent GAs. I want at least get them all to C! BaldBoris 13:54, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, go ahead! If I really disagree I will revert and let you know, but I don't expect that. By the way: I think something went wrong on your recent edits to the 1904 Tour article... --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 06:52, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I missed this reply. OK no worries, I suppose the most contro edits for you could be merging the opening changes from previous Tour section, but this had to happen as it not the correct layout per the GT FAs. Also, I moved moved some parts to the main Tour article as they really had nothing to do with that years race. I can't see any problems with 1904? I've concentrated on the post-War ones so far, but the pre-War ones ideally should have the same layout structure. Of course there's no CL section so need to think about it. Really need to do CLTs for the 70s and 80s ones, especially because I want to work on 78. Did you just go off the French wiki for the others or use memoire-du-cyclisme.net. All links to this site have been down since 2012 and I've requested for them to be archived. Also, I've correct most of the total distances going off this, but now some of the maps by Andrei loas now have the wrong distance. I also removed the average speed per this and the FAs. I'll finish off the missing maps unless you want do to them. I'm sure I'll be back asking more questions. BaldBoris 18:41, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You had already fixed the 1904 article in the meantime :).
For memoire du cyclisme: they changed url, the new one is [2]. Unfortunately, they also made many of the Tour-articles subscriber-only.
For the CLT: I found these in newspapers. I started with collecting the links for each day (for my own purposes), but after the newspapers changed links two times I stopped that...
The distances: can't help you there... You can ask Andrei loas about this, I exchanged messages with him before and found him to be very reasonable. I think it would even be better to have pictures without distances...
I agree completely with the removal of average speeds! --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 19:07, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Happy I haven't upset you then... His maps are great, but need to lose all the superfluous text that's already in the IB, and he shouldn't actually have the copyright on there because the bottom layers were made by others under CC. Sorry that 1972 sentence confused me and may need revising because it sounds like 1947 was held "entirely in France". BaldBoris 19:27, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Edge, I saw (with some delay) that some issues appeared about the copyright sign on my maps and the total distance of the tours which sometimes differs from source to source. A reliable source that I found, which I also used in creating the accurate stage traces on the maps, is www.touratlas.nl. It lists all known stage maps taken from newspapers. Previously, the overall distances I calculated were taken from Memoire du cyclisme, but I noticed over the years that even they had some errors. Then there's the distances listed on the official Tour website. In any event, to avoid any potential errors which may need more work later on, I think it's best I remove the copyright line and distance from all maps and re-upload them when I find some time. I might also remove the day/month information to make the maps clearer. What do you think? There's over 50 files now to be re-saved and re-uploaded so might take a while.--- Andrei I. Loas (Talk · Contribs) 04:26, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, all sorted now! Re-uploaded all edited maps with copyright and distance removed. I hope all is good now.--- Andrei I. Loas (Talk · Contribs) 00:24, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great! --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 15:39, 26 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In most articles, the stage winners are in two tables: the stage characteristics table and the classification leadership table. Already for some time I think that they don't belong in the latter one...what's your opinion on that? EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 19:20, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think they aid in understanding how the classification leaders changed. It's obviously been the standard for a long time, and with all four FA race articles using it proves that if wasn't picked up on during their FACs, no real problem exists. Anyway, I think it should be discussed at WT:CYC, not here with me. BaldBoris 19:50, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thinking about starting Wikipedia:WikiProject Cycling/Tour de France task force to centralise everything. EP111, would you be interested? It may also get others to chip in if we set some easily achievable goals. I'm working on 1962, and when doing the teams list noticed that memoire du cyclisme has a slightly different GC than letour.fr. I haven't deciphered Mundo just yet. I suppose we have to go with the official ones? BaldBoris 14:38, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BaldBoris: That sounds good. I'm looking at getting all the stage pages up since 1903, with the layout standardised. Similar to 2015 Tour de France, Stage 1 to Stage 11, each stage needs a description of the route, details of what happened on each stage and the relevant tables for each stage. So, it's going to be a very big job (about 2000 stages in all?), though easily splittable into much smaller pieces. With regards to any differences in GCs, I go with details which can be cited from multiple sources. Those aren't necessarily provided from LeTour.fr, as I have found errors there. EP111 (talk) 15:04, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EP111: OK I'll do it soon. I can't quite understand how you do it all so quickly. Amazing! I'll be doing the 1962 stages in next few days. I'm aiming to get the 1962 main to at least GA. I also want to get the teams to FL, so if you ever do the route description for the stages, I'll do the race parts and it could become a GA/FA topic (like this and this). With the GC, it was when I saw Le Lan was 85th on MDC but 92nd on LeTour. Mundo has 92nd. Who else is there to trust? Cycling archives: 85th, BikeRaceInfo: 85th, ProCyclingStats: 85th. They probaly just all copied MDC so, I think I'll have to go with LeTour on this because Mundo was printed the next day. Very odd because there wasn't too many differences. I feel really stupid that I can't work out how to get the time difference from from Mundo?? Bad at maths I'm afraid. BaldBoris 17:47, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BaldBoris: The speed is down to copying the article or section to Notepad (or Metapad, if carriage returns are to be edited), then using find & replace, mainly. EP111 (talk) 18:18, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EP111: OK you're just faster than me then. I use Find and Replace for FireFox. Sorry Edge for using your talk for our chat. I'll start the task force ASAP. BaldBoris 18:32, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to inform you that I created the task force. I've used the two tables and the structure text from your page. I didn't think you'd mind, but if you have a problem with it please remove it. Hopefully we can more people editing Tour pages. BaldBoris 16:17, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cycling team flags

Hi Edge, I just saw that you've created my non-existing user page, over a week ago. A post on my talk page, would have highlighted a notice in my top bar, and given you a swift answer. A userpage post doesn't have the simple option to reply and notice the person you're "talking" to. A simple link to the cycling project would also be nice, when you're referring to it.

I've started adding flags after a discussion on Template talk Infobox Cycling Race. I did search for a previous discussion, but didn't find any. Now you've mentioned that there is indeed a discussion somewhere, I searched again and found this archived one. I'll read it now and get back to you. Emmarade (talk) 19:08, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for that, I was editing from my phone when I sent you the message... I didn't mean to vandalize your empty user page, I was aiming for your talk page, but failed miserably. It is very annoying to make links on a phone keyboard, and I claim that is a good excuse for why not add links. (That I did not go back later to add the links is because I am lazy, I can not defend that...) Just to be clear: you don't have to convince me that cycling teams need flags (I'm somewhere in the middle, I think that cycling teams have a nationality but I'm fine with omitting it), but the rest of the cycling project. I only sent you a message because I was afraid you might spend hours to add flags, to have all that work later undone by others. --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 20:41, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
