Images
I noticed you recently uploaded Image:CPView.JPG. Dealing correctly with images on Wikipedia can be one of the most difficult things to learn because of all the complexities of copyright law. Whenever an image is added to Wikipedia, it needs to recieve an image copyright tag in order to explain for future users why we believe this particular image is acceptable for use on Wikipedia. In this case, I have added {{software-screenshot}} to indicate that your image was created as a screenshot from a software program and hence likely to be fair use. It is also a good idea to provide in the image description a little information about where the image came from and who made it. (In this case, I presume you made it.) Don't worry you'll get the hang of it all. Dragons flight 00:34, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
I added a "cc-by" tag which seemed the closest to what I know. Further details/discussion on the image's discussion page. crandles23:26, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Cyclones
Hi. Thanks for drawing that to my attention. See my reply on my talk page (I don't know how you like to do these things, but I prefer to answer where the question was, so don't talk here talk there) and on the trop cyc page. William M. Connolley 19:34:18, 2005-09-05 (UTC).
ps: Go on, edit your user page, even if just to say boo! - you don't have to identify yourself if you don't want to. Its a good idea, because many people react badly to edits by "red users".
Yes I had seen the talk which didn't seem to be improving the article though to me there seemed agreement that the growth was no longer exponential. So I decided to be bold. Assuming it is now linear growth seems a bit presumptuous. (The lines on the graph allow people to conclude that if they want but I am not forcing them to decide that.) Simply calling it logistic seemed a more general term than linear and that was what the discussion was about. crandles12:59, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I find it hard to convice people that the number of articles in not an exponential graph any longer. Some say it is still exponential as on a logarithmic scale it gives a more or less straight line others call it sub-exponential growth. On de:wikipedia it is already for 3 year a constant growth of about 500 to 600 articles per day. See Image:Neue Artikel.png and Image:Meilensteine.png. HenkvD14:37, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It should be much easier to convince people it is not exponential than it is to persuade them that it is logistic. Just calculate a best fit for steady growth and for exponential growth and see which is a better fit by calculation the least square errors. Suggesting logistic growth is probably not going to get agreement. You will get a better fit but that is only to be expected due to the higher number of degrees of freedom. With my edits I tried to leave a large number of options being possible without saying which one is to be preferred. (eg exponential, steady growth with or without annual cycles and with or without weekly cycles (7 day average selected to make these disappear) or logistic (in name of file).) crandles15:20, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you creating a new "season INVEST history" section when all of the INVESTs have already been documented and archived in the respective month archives? –Chacor12:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They probably are, but isn't a single summary easier to follow? Also helps you know which months archive to look at. The main point was I disagreed with removal of July invests from the talk page. I felt it more appropriate to not only restore but have a season record. If people disagree fine. crandles12:07, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
95L was gone on 1 July but it was still on the page on 23rd July and July archive hadn't been created then. Anyway, where do I find the details of 91L? If it is missing from the monthly archieves is that a good reason for having an INVEST history summary page to prevent that happening? crandles13:05, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
91L probably got lost in the hoopla around Andrea. The INVESTs are documented like that only the help in article-writing for storm history. Otherwise they serve no purpose (all storm discussion is at the Wikia, which is where you'd probably be able to find info on 91L). So there's no real need for having an INVEST history page. –Chacor13:13, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Climatologists category is incredibly bare
Being bare gives undue weight so consider working on:
I've noticed that this image has contradictory copyright tags - surely it can't be CC1.0 and a non-free screenshot? If it is non-free then it needs a fair use rationale. I know it's quite an old image now but since it's still in use it might be worth clarifying which of the tags is correct? Ta, Purgatorio19:05, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned on the discussion page, I am sure I have seen something by the author saying images can be used provided they are attributed. However, I couldn't find it. I did ask on the development thread here but the only answer was not by the author here. I am not at all sure about tags; does this mean images that have to be attributed like this one should not have the non-free tag? crandles23:44, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That means they're not free (even if you find the permission, it would have to be emailed to [email protected] to get proper OTRS clearance). I have updated the image page to suit, however it does need a Fair Use Rationale for each page that it's on. Cheers! --Storkk (talk) 23:27, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:CPView.JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:CPView.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Hello C-randles! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondarysources to this article, it would greatly help us with the current 134 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
I have nominated Krishna AchutaRao, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Krishna AchutaRao. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Notability s not asserted nor verified. There are no citations nor references. There are no external links. Without any of these we are entitled to assume it is original research.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Hello. I just observed something come up and have started a discussion over on the subject Talk page. Hope you'll join in.
It's kind of complicated, and was hard to articulate the issue, so I hope you'll bear with me as I tried to explain and offer an example, so that we might together improve Wikipedia. Cheers. N2e (talk) 18:19, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. What is the correct name of the conjecture? Some IP keeps changing it, but then you changed it to something else, not what it originally was. Could I please be provided some clarification on this? ᴀɴᴏɴʏᴍᴜᴤᴤ ᴜᴤᴇʀ(ᴛᴀʟᴋ)23:17, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it is "Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture" per this or this. The relevant wikipedia page is Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. I just changed a capital C for conjecture to small c so that link works. "Castillo-de Caro Conjecture" is as far as I can tell just vandalism, two different problems have been changed to this then changed back. Hope this answers your question. crandles (talk) 16:55, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, back in Jan 2016 in this edit you added a tag to our article on Satellite Temperature Measuremrents. The tag was removed today when someone else wasn't sure what the tag was for. I don't know either, to be honest. But I thought I'd drop a note here and encourage to take a look at the current text in case you can think of RS based improvements that still need to be made. Have a happy! And if you're so inclined, check out WP:WikiProject Climate change, which is just getting off the ground. New members welcome!NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 18:00, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, just wanted to say thanks for all your thinking about categories at WP:PROCC. Long ago and far away I did relational database programming. The concept of categorization is very much something I understand, but the wikipedia way of doing it is not. I confess I haven't studied your ideas and contribs there yet. Some of the help pages I've studied for the first time recently were hard to internalize and I'm giving project work a bit of rest. But I'll be back. Keep it up! category question
Hi, thanks for your interest in categories on climate pages. Question.... what is the goal? How do we expect to use these categories? Can categorization be harnessed to assist us in the clerical job of managing items on our to-do list? It's probably a discussion for the project talk page, so maybe I should have posted there, but I did wish to emphasize how much your enthusiasm for categorization is appreciated. I understand the how (I think) I just don't understand the how are we doing it to best HELP us? NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:31, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect I may be more in the dark about usefulness than you. First item on to-do list was categories and it seemed useful to have a list of what categories are in use. Thought this was something I could usefully do even if no particular expertise. I'm still finding some. I think it would be useful to have project discussion on scope of project (maybe that is too much a moving target), intended use of Categories... Re how are we doing it to best HELP us I have no idea, any indications of intended uses might be helpful. So far my approach is not very systematic, aimed at finding as many of the categories as I can fairly quickly. A more systematic approach may evolve. In short, don't assume I know what I am doing. crandles (talk) 12:56, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we are in the same boat. I'm an old guy. My programming skills are obsolete but for awhile I was a relational database programmer. Setting up table structure and running set queries is an awful lot like wiki categorization. But, like you, I don't know how to match our editing goals with cat and banner design. For that matter, I'm not sure what the first editing goals even are. So your suggestion of a bigger picture discussion at the project page is a point very very very very well made. We need that. A tag has been placed on SpaceBEE requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/spacebee.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. There was a dispute resolution request sent to Wikipedia about whether SN10's landing was a failure or partial failure. It has been decided that the landing outcome column shouldn't even be there because it caused Original Research. I am going to revert your edit. If you have any questions, leave me a message on my talk page.
64.121.103.144 (talk) 22:44, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The link you should have provided is Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#List_of_Starship_flights. I didn't know that was ongoing as my username was not correctly spelled and I have only seen it now after it is closed. It's conclusion says "The dispute is about original research. The simple answer is this- if a source does not currently exist which clearly calls the launch a success or failure- any analysis of the data is original research and does not belong on WP at all." However there are plenty of sources which all prominently say it exploded, if that is not virtually indistinguishable from saying failure, I really don't know what you can reasonably expect to find. But if this conclusion tells us anything it is that "partial failure" is not supported. The talk page discussions discuss in more detail and I take it as saying show as failure but show the controversy ie that SpaceX did claim it as a success but later admitted that there were problems with engine thrust leading to hard landing way past leg loads. So the latest from SpaceX and Elon Musk twitter account is an official channel of communication is that the landing certainly had issues and you can't put it down as partial failure. crandles (talk) 23:28, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dgrundler: If there is an easy way to find one ref amongst 800 then I don't know how, I suppose you could edit entire article and do a search for the URL. The ref concerned just happened to be one of three listed just under the Future Launches heading which I monitor for changes. That ref lists changes it makes on a date near the top so I try to update all changed dates (you missed one but no worries) then update the ref date. So I was just familiar with it rather than any clever trick. C-randles (talk) 22:28, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for finding that in the source, and cross-referencing it to the wiki definitions used for what mass cat LVs are super heavy lift. Might be a little bit of synthesis, but is okay by me since it is descriptively accurate and arguably not WP:SYN. N2e (talk) 13:45, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the nomination. Not sure whether I want the bother of going through the process or do many admin things but it is nice to receive such a nomination. C-randles (talk) 11:31, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I've had a look at your statistics, and although you've done a lot of writing for the encyclopedia, you've not participated in many admin areas (eg: four AfDs in 15 years), so I think you would get a tough time at RfA. I would leave it for now, unless you take an interest in the maintenance side. Ritchie333(talk)(cont)22:20, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, C-randles. This is a bot-delivered message letting you know that Draft:SpaceBEE, a page you created, has not been edited in at least 5 months. Draft space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for article space.
If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion under CSD G13. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it. You may request userfication of the content if it meets requirements.
If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available here.
Hi. Would you be interested in joining a WikiProject SpaceX? If you are, can you please make a WikiProject proposal for it (I as an IP, can not make the proposal cause I would be stopped when trying to create the proposal page).

Hello, C-randles. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "SpaceBEE".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Mattdaviesfsic was:
This draft's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article. In summary, the draft needs multiple published sources that are:
in-depth (not just passing mentions about the subject)
Make sure you add references that meet these criteria before resubmitting. Learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue. If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
The comment the reviewer left was:
Needs a bit more expansion and more references yet. See other comments below from S0091 as well.

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.
I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.
I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. S Philbrick(Talk)13:10, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources to verify the information and demonstrate that it is not original research.
