The sole fact that you wrote about him last year does not necessarily make you a COI editor by itself. Just make sure that your edits are written in a neutral tone and that everything you add to the article is reliably sourced (read WP:RS) with inline citations (read WP:INLINE). I just found it appropriate to leave some message on that afd to let other editors know that this account possibly has an interest in keeping that article. Even without an admission, I find the tag appropriate, since it only says that the account "appears to have a close connection with the subject of the article being discussed", it's not a very strong statement.
