Hi!

The lemmas on en:wiki of Russian rolling stock are written in latin letters. Therefore we should use in the template a different listing of the locomotive designations: instead of ВЛ80 (VL80) we should use VL80 (ВЛ80). What speaks against that? --High Contrast (talk) 10:12, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2012-02-07T10:12:00.000Z","author":"High Contrast","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-High_Contrast-2012-02-07T10:12:00.000Z-Kyrillic_vs._latin_writing","replies":[]}}-->

I agree, but of course if there is no English article, then there isn't much of a need to show the Latin translitetation. David S. Lawyer 06:27, 30 January 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dlawyer (talkcontribs)

I've done this for a few locos. that had no article on them in the English wiki. But I suspect there are many more such cases. These need to be distinguished from the links to en:wiki since we want people to create an article in en: for them. I've prefixed links to the Russian wiki by ru (example ru:ВЛ15). But I haven't used the transliterated name such as VL15.

The reason for this is that anyone going to the Russian wiki webpage likely knows Russian (or at lease the Russian alphabet) and thus doesn't need the loco abbrev. transliterated.

Also, I at first tried to utilize the Russian icon (in Russian) but not only was it too long and in bold face (distracting) but it seemed to damage the conversion of the markup text. "Preview" was OK and the "save" results were OK but then when I would go to another page and then back to a loco page to look at the template, I saw the markup text in the template display. This problem went away after I stopped using the ru icon. So there are 3 reasons not to use the ru icon. Also, if one writes a link to the ru wiki without using a |, then an ru: is automatically added to the displayed text in the template. However for locos that have subscripts and/or superscripts in the designation, one must use |.

I don't have time to do this, but one could write a script program to automate this and use the script to call a browser (such as the very old lynx text browser) to test if there is such a page on the Russian wiki. If so, the markup :ru: would be automatically added, etc. Thus the entire template would be modified by the script and the work would consist of writing and debugging the script. There are lots of script languages such as bash, perl, and python. For this one could use command-line Linux, (which I have on another PC).David S. Lawyer 06:22, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

I noticed that our Russian friends appear to be blissfully unaware of the international metric symbols. See Metric system for some of these symbols. It's already there, as 'ЛВ', which redirects to Russian locomotive class LV. I'll change the link to go directly to that page with its English title presently. 2Q (talk) 23:00, 12 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2016-06-12T23:00:00.000Z","author":"2Q","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-2Q-2016-06-12T23:00:00.000Z-Peter_Horn-2016-06-12T16:43:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
