Recommend that the henge (transforming creatures) such as the kitsune and tanuki, and a few others go here. All, I'm redesigning the infobox for a cleaner look. You can find the template in progress over at my sandbox. It's based off the Christianity template, so some of those entries have yet to be replaced with the newer stuff. Feel free to make changes and such as we go along, and if we're all in agreement on it, we can take it live.--み使い Mitsukai 14:24, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-Mitsukai-2006-02-16T16:22:00.000Z-Mitsukai-2006-02-16T14:24:00.000Z
み使い"}}-->

I've said it elsewhere (and I know it's being worked on) but just in case someone comes here looking to do some work on the infobox, the colors are terrible. Completely inappropriate, and they mess up the general look of every page they're on. I have no idea how to edit templates, so I'm sort of a backseat driver in this case, but the sooner those colors are gone the better, in my opinion. The look on Mitsukai's sandbox looks way better to me. How about putting in an English translation for these two categories. I know the difficulties in translating "Kami and Megami" into English (Gods or Spirits or Somthing Else?) But Ryu are unambiguously dragons. Yes, there are minor differences between dragons in Japan and those of China or other Asian countries, but they are clearly dragons. So I don't think that would be a problem. In fact, you could even replace Ryu (which is not understood by most English speakers) with Dragons, I would think. Kami and Megami are different. There is a push by Shinto scholars to have the word "Kami" incorporated into English (akin to "Allah"), but I don't think that the majority of English speakers recognize it as such at the moment. So perhaps a compromise, including the Japanese word but with a parenthetical translation. Kami and Megami could go either way, in my opinion. I would have no problem with leaving just the Japanese, since it is clearly a distinct concept than what would be suggested by the best single-word English translation. But I definitely think Ryu should either be replaced with Dragons or have a parenthetical translation, since the Japanese concept of "Ryu" would be clearly recognizable to English speakers as "Dragons." I think I'll change it to dragons for the time being, and if that's not cool then feel free to change it and we can discuss it further. The reason we have Kami and Megami is because the gods (as gods) are handled through the Shinto project. I can agree with Ryu being dragons, but I think somewhere along the line it was agreed (mainly because of the names of the articles) the myth pages would be Kami/Megami.--み使い Mitsukai 02:34, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-MikeDockery-2006-02-17T04:06:00.000Z-Mitsukai-2006-02-17T02:34:00.000Z
み使い"}}-->
Ok. Like I said, I could see it going either way with Kami / Megami because the translation would be ambiguous. If there's already a consensus on the issue then that's cool. Folklorists

__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Why is Glen Grant listed under folklorists in a Japanese mythology template? Isn't he just some guy who studies Japanese folklore specifically as it appears in Hawaii? I think he should be taken out, and in his place should be added the father of Japanese folklore studies, Kunio Yanagita. Frankly, I'm quite surprised that Yanagita wasn't one of the first ones to be listed. Can I edit this myself? I'm going to try, but if I'm not allowed then please consider these suggestions as actions you might want to take. Thanks. Shikino 16:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

A discussion came up with Wikiproject food before that it was silly to have a cookie-cutter image of a hamburger as the top image every food article. Also nav to other topics is not generally thought as due weight to be shown at the very top.

Likewise, article on every Japanese deity should not be shown an image of Amaterasu at top. Just replace with {{Jmyth navbox long}} and put these unobtrusively at bottom. — Kiyoweap 03:08, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
