Template talk:Iwi and hapū
This template could be cleaned up and ordered more (making tribal relationships clearer). I recognise this is simply a first version, and look forward to others' input.

I think it's incorrect to say that Moriori are an iwi. They may have started out as one or more iwi in the 16th century, but they developed their own tribal subdivisions. (See here, for example.) - Agree, have taken them out. Another issue is that some categories are waka or descent-based (Waikato-Tainui, Arawa) while others are geographical. This leaves some tribes stranded, eg Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Toa which are Waikato-Tainui but appear only in the vague category Southern Iwi. Ngāti Raukawa have sections that still live in the Waikato, not sure about Ngāti Toa. I also think the subhead "Southern iwi" is misleading - if we decide to go for geography rather than descent then maybe this could be "Cook Strait iwi" instead. And although Te Āti Awa is marked with a dagger indicating that the iwi occurs in both main islands, there doesn't seem to be any indication of that in their article. Maybe the tribes that occur in the South Island should simply be listed in the South Island iwi subcat, and too bad if they appear twice, and ditch the daggers. I also would like to see this template based on a reliable source - I have the suspicion it just grew out of various Wikipedia sources. And Ngāti Awa is an example of a tribal name used by two or three distinct, unrelated, separate tribes that occupy different parts of the country. - The template was created from this diagram, a diagram I found in this book and a few facts I found on existing articles. Obviously they will not collectively provide a perfect outcome, but I thought a better one template than none at all. Perhaps a government department might have an authoritative table? - Fair enough, my bad, I was too hasty in doubting your source. From memory there are maps on some govt websites, and there is always the National Library list which I always bring up... it was compiled by (Maori poet, scholar and librarian) Robert Sullivan when he was working there. Its a veeerrrry big list of iwi and tribes and hapu and well thought out in terms of clearly distinguishing similarly named tribes from each other, tho it takes a bit of nutting out at times because of the way its presented on the NL website. I am proposing to move the iwi article Te Kawerau to "Te Kawerau-ā-Maki", which will obviously involve editing this template. For anyone who is interested in this, I've started a discussion on Talk:Te Kawerau.
