Born in Gamō-gun, Shiga Prefecture (now Ōmihachiman city). He graduated from Shiga Prefectural Hikone East High School, Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering. He joined Toray after completing a master's program at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University.
