Kirkpatrick is the father of Washington Post digital photo editor Nick Kirkpatrick and radio host Alexander Kirkpatrick, and the stepfather of filmmaker and artist Mercedes Thurlbeck. He plays squash, collects grave rubbings and rings church bells.
