As part of the BBC Telethon Children in Need The BBC Regions all have around 5–8-minute round-ups every hour during the telethon. This does not interrupt the schedule of items shown from BBC Television Centre as the presenters usually hand over to the regions, giving those in the main network studio a short break. These are sometimes held in the BBC Studios but usually take the form of an Outside Broadcast from a venue in the region. These can be Theatres, Museums, Local Historic Sites or even Theme Parks. Local Musicians perform and either people can pay a donation to watch or charities and fundraisers get invited to give their coverage. They are usuaLily hosted by members of the Regional news teams. They often host acts or choirs in the various Children in Need Link-ups.
Between 2001 and 2004 instead of the regions hosting their own regional broadcasts. The 3 Nations and 3 of the English regions would host larger concerts with large acts such as Atomic Kitten, the Sugababes or Westlife. However, in 2005 they reverted to the old format of each region getting a smaller event.
In 2020 The Covid-19 pandemic, the switch to a shorter 3 hour format and falling viewing figures, saw the BBC stop the regional broadcasts meaning 2019 was the last year to use them. 2020 tried a short regional update socially distanced in the regional news studio, but this was never used again.
BBC London as well as having the main telethon in their region host their own event. However, in the Children in Need Choir, when the studio was still in the region, these events wouldn't host choirs. Instead the main production team would create a choir from children in London who would perform in the Studio. However, before 2001 when it was part of the larger BBC London and the South East region their regional events did host an act in the link ups.
The list is incomplete and starts with 1993 as verifiable sources from 1980 to 1992 then are a lot harder to find.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland had further opt-outs from their OBs hosted across the nation. These included Ayr at Ayr Town Hall which was where the Scotland Link-Up group were. And Carrickfergus at Carrickfergus Castle where the Northern Ireland link-up group were.
This was the first year they stopped having broadcasts in each region and instead hosted larger concerts with larger acts headlining which they would occasionally go to from the main broadcast from the BBC Television Centre in London. This format was used until 2005 when they returned to the original format.
