In 1924 Townley had an unsuccessful trial with Chelsea. The outside left then signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 1927 where he participated in three matches and found the back of the net twice.[3] Scoring on his Lilywhites debut in a 3–1 defeat to Everton at White Hart Lane in October 1927 in the old First Division.[4]
In 1929 he joined Clapton Orient where he made 19 appearances and scored two goals. He left Clapton Orient in 1930 to resume his career in Switzerland.
