Bengali fiction writer (1935–2021)
Buddhadeb Guha (29 June 1936 – 29 August 2021) was an Indian Bengali language fiction writer,[ 2] [ 3] singer and painter.[ 4]
Career
Born in Calcutta ,[ 5] Guha studied at St. Xavier's College of the University of Calcutta . He spent his early years in various districts of Eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh ). Those days in Rangpur , Jaipurhat and Barisal are depicted in his Rivu series, some books from which are dedicated to friends from his youth.
Guha created Rijuda , an imaginary character who, with his sidekick Rudra, explores jungles mainly in Eastern India .[ 6] He won the Ananda Puraskar in 1976 and was a chartered accountant by profession.[ 7] [ 8]
Apart from writing, Guha was trained to sing by Rabindra Sangeet at the Tagore school of music, Dakshinee . He learned Hindustani classical music and old-style Tappa songs from Ramkumar Chattopadhyay and Chandidas Mal .
He was also a painter and toward the end of his life, when his eyesight began to fail and he dictated his writings, he fell back on this art.[ 9]
