The proposal of establishing Army Institute of Military History (AIMH) was approved on 2 June 2017 by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and inaugurated AIMH on 28 July 2021. AIMH has been set up as a semi-autonomous research body with a broad outreach both within the civilian and military domains.[1]
The institute also serves as a forum for veterans, academia, subject experts and concerned civil society members to gather and air their learned views on subjects of interest to the Army.
The institute is emerging as a centre for both historical and other professional matters; a melting pot for both serving and retired officers, and civilians, to meet and exchange views.
Located in Rawalpindi, the mission of AIMH is to preserve & promote the military history (MH) of Pakistan and the history of Pakistan Army, while acting as centre of excellence for the study of MH & provide a forum for open source intellectual input to the Pakistan Army, through two-way interaction with academia and civil society.
Roles & Tasks
The major roles & tasks including record, preserve & archive MH, research work on MH from available sources, support the Army by conducting research-based analytical studies into subjects that require a MH context, Teach MH in schools of instruction, write MH, professional interaction with veterans, affiliations with academic institutions and interaction with academia, preserve and promote Pakistan’s physical history and Promote Pakistan’s military history within civil society.
