Construction on the mosque started on 30 June 1934.[4][5] It was designed by architects Auguste Cadet [fr].[5] Cadet, along with Edmond Brion, was implicated in the design of other buildings in the Habous quarter, including the nearby al-Yusufi Mosque (or Moulay Youssef Mosque).[5][2] The sultan visited the construction site in August 1934 while work was being supervised by architects Abad and Ben Omar.[4] The mosque was officially inaugurated on 12 June 1936, in the presence of Mohammed V.[5][6]
The mosque underwent a major restoration in 2007.[3][7]
