The New Jersey Devils' first-round pick went to the Boston Bruins as the result of a compensation trade on July 21, 1981 when Colorado signed restricted free agent Dwight Foster. To complete the trade, Boston's tenth-round pick in 1982 NHL Entry Draft was also sent to Colorado in exchange for Boston's option to swap first-round picks in 1982 NHL Entry Draft (this pick) and a second-round pick in 1982 NHL Entry Draft.
