كانون الأول هو الشهر الأخير الثاني عشر من شهور السنة الميلادية[1] حسب الأسماء السريانية المستعملة في المشرق العربي. يقابله في التسمية الغربية شهر ديسمبر.

حسب لسان العرب:[2]

«والكانونان: شهران في قلب الشتاء، رُوميَّة : كانون الأَوَّل، وكانونُ الآخر؛ هكذا يسميهما أَهل الروم»

كانون الأول عند العرب

قال الأَزهري: العرب تقول: السنة أَربعة أَزمان، ولكل زمن منها ثلاثة أَشهر، وهي فصول السنة: منها فصل الصيف وهو فصلُ ربيع الكَلإِ آذارُ ونَيْسانُ وأَيّارُ، ثم بعده فصل القيظ حَزِيرانُ وتَموزُ وآب، ثم بعده فصل الخريف أَيْلُولُ وتَشْرِين وتَشْرين، ثم بعده فصل الشتاء كانُونُ وكانونُ وسُباطُ.[3]

في الشعر

ارتبط كانون ببرد الشتاء وهمه. قال الطبري:[4]

«قولهم "أثقل من كانون" فيه وجهان، أحدهما: أن الكانون عند الروم الشتاءُ، ويحتاج فيه إلى النفقة ما لا يحتاج إليه في الصيف، فهو ثقيل من هذه الجهة»

كمثال على هذا يقول الشاعر:[4]

لعنة الله والرسُولِ وأهل الـ
ـأرْضِ (الأرض) طُرًّا على بَنِي مَظْعُونِ
بِعْتُ في الصيف عندهم قُبَّةَ الخَيْـ
ـشِ (الخيش) وبِعْتُ الكانون في الكانُونِ

في التراث الشعبي

ارتبطت الكوانين كانون الأول والثاني (ديسمبر ويناير) بالتراث والحكايا الشعبية والأمثال في المشرق العربي. من الأمثال الشهيرة المتداولة حول كانون:[5]

  • بين كوانين وشباط ، عند جارك لا تبات.
  • عرس المجانين في كوانين.
  • عرسك يا خـَنـّون، في كانون.
  • في كانون كِنّ عند اهلك يا مجنون.
  • بكانون كِنّ في بيتك، وكـثر من حطبك وزيتك.
  • في كانون الأصم، أقعـد في بيتك وانطم.
  • في كانون كِنّ ، وعَ الفقير حِنّ.
  • مثل عتمة كانون.
  • أبرد من ميَّة كانون.
  • بعد كانون، الشتا بيهـون.
  • غيمة كانون بتخوف المجنون.
  • ما في أنقى من قمر تشرين ، ولا أعتم من غيم كانون.
