البدن[2] أو الجسد أو الجسم[3]، اسم يُطلق على مجموعة الأعضاء الموجودة في الكائن الحي، مثل الرأس واليدين والساقين وغيرهم .[4][5][6]

إن مفهوم الجسد هو مفهوم أنثروبولوجي بامتياز، وغالبا ما يتم الخلط بينه وبين الجسم حيث أن هناك حدودا فاصلة بين الإنسان كجسم والإنسان كجسد. إن الكثير من المجتمعات تعرف الإنسان بجسمه ولا تتصور الجسد بصفة منفصلة عنه، حيث ينظر إلى الجسد في بعده البيولوجي فقط وليس داخل نسيج المعاني، وبالتالي ضرورة استحضار الوعي الفردي الناشئ حتى يتم النظر إليه بعيدا عن العالم الذي يحتويه. ومن هنا النظر إلى الجسد باعتباره المادة الحية للممارسات والتمثلات الاجتماعية، والمتخيلات الجماعية التي تنتج وفق سياقات اجتماعية وثقافية معينة، ويمكن تمثيلها كمنظار لرؤية الآخرين، وأداة للتصنيف الاجتماعي والثقافي.[7]

من جهة أخرى، مفهوم الجسد يختلف عن صورة الجسد، فبينما تركيبة الجسد لا تختلف في شكلها العام من شخص لآخر، نجد صورة الجسد هي ما يعكس هوية الفرد التي تختلف حسب الطبيعة والبيئة التي يوجد بها، إذ أن الجسد يتمظهر وفق آليات يسوقها له المحيط الاجتماعي والثقافي، ويتشكل حسب ما يعطيه سياق المجتمع من أدوار وخلفيات للتفكير.[8]
