Tom Jenkins

Tom Jenkins (1883, Paarl - 1966, Durban) was 'n burgemeester van Pretoria en Margate. Tom Jenkinsrylaan in Pretoria is na hom vernoem.[1]

Jenkins is in 1883 in die Paarl gebore en het in 1889 saam met sy ouers na Pretoria verhuis. Van 1907 tot 1913 was hy sekretaris van die Transvaal-museum. Hy het ook vir die Departement Binnelandse Inkomste gewerk en was voorsitter van die belastingbetalingsvereniging van Rietondale. Later was hy eers Arcadia se verteenwoordiger op die stadsraad en toe ook vir Riviera en Rietondale. In 1944 het hy burgemeester van Pretoria geword.[1]

Jenkins het grond wat hy aan die noordehelling van Meintjieskop besit het aan die owerheid verkoop om by die Libertas-landgoed in te lyf. 'n Verkoopsvoorwaarde was dat die bestaande voetpaadjie oor die nek tot 'n volwaardige pad ontwikkel sou word. Dié pad wat gedurende die Tweede Wêreldoorlog deur Italiaanse krygsgevangenes gebou is sou later as Tom Jenkinsrylaan bekend staan.[1]

Nadat Jenkins afgetree het, het hy na Margate verhuis waar hy in 1946 burgemeester van die dorp geword het. Hy is in 1966 in Durban oorlede.[1]
