Sargas (ook bekend as Theta Scorpii of θ Sco) is ’n dubbelster in die suidelike sterrebeeld Skerpioen (Scorpius). Met sy skynbare magnitude van 1,87[5] is dit een van die helderste sterre in die naglug. Volgens parallaksmetings is dit sowat 300 ligjare van die Son af.[2] Die twee komponente is θ Scorpii A en B.

Name

Die dubbelster se Bayer-naam is "Theta Scorpii". Sy tradisionele naam, "Sargas", is van Sumeriese herkoms,[10] of is dalk die Persies vir "pylpunt". In 2016 het die Internasionale Astronomiese Unie se sternaamwerkgroep (WGSN) die naam "Sargas" vir θ Scorpii A goedgekeur[11] omdat hulle name aan individuele sterre toegeken het eerder as aan sterstelsels.

Eienskappe

Die primêre ster, A, is ’n geëvolueerde helder reus met ’n sterreklassifikasie van F0 II.[1] Sy massa is sowat 5,7 keer dié van die Son, maar dit het uitgesit tot ’n radius van 26 keer die Son s’n[7] en ’n ligsterkte van 1 834 keer dié van die Son.[6] Sy effektiewe temperatuur van 7 268 K[6] gee dit die tipiese geelwit kleur van ’n F-tipe ster. Die ster roteer baie vinnig en het daarom ’n ovaal vorm, met die radius by sy ewenaar wat 19% groter is as by sy pole.[8]

Die metgeselster, B, het ’n skynbare magnitude van 5,36 en is 6,470 boogsekondes van die hoofster af.[12]

Kultuuraspek

Theta Scorpii kom voor op die vlag van Brasilië en simboliseer die staat Alagoas.[13]
