Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923) was 'n Franse toneelspeelster en rolprentaktrise en moontlik die beroemdste aktrise van haar generasie.[1]

Sy is in Parys gebore aan 'n Nederlandse moeder, Julie Bernardt, en 'n anonieme Nederlandse vader. Bernhardt het self die spelwyse van haar van verander, om haar Nederlandse herkoms te verdoesel. Die naam wat sy as dié van haar vader aangevoer het, Edouard Bernhardt, was in werklikheid die van haar moeder se broer (maar met die Nederlandse spelling). Haar oupa was Moritz Bernard, 'n berugte Joodse koopman in Amsterdam.

Sarah Bernhardt het een van die allergrootste aktrises van haar tyd geword en is steeds 'n legendariese Franse toneelspeelster. Sy het dikwels in Parys opgetree, waar 'n teater na haar vernoem is. Sy het ook toere rondom die wêreld onderneem en in Londen, New York en Amsterdam opgetree. Oscar Wilde het die toneelstuk Salome vir haar geskryf en Mark Twain het opgemerk: "Daar is vyf soorte aktrises: slegte aktrises, redelike aktrises, goeie aktrises, geweldige aktrises. En dan is daar Sarah Bernhardt."[2]

Haar bekendste vertolking was waarskynlik dié van La Dame aux Camélias ("Die Dame van die Kamelias") in die gelyknamige toneelstuk deur Alexandre Dumas junior - 'n rol wat sy byna 3000 keer herhaal het. Op 'n latere leeftyd het sy die hoofrol in 'n reeks rolprente vertolk, waarvan veral La Reine Elizabeth ("Koningin Elizabet") 'n wêreldwye sukses was. Dié Franse stilprent is in Amerika as "Queen Elizabeth" vertoon en is die eerste langspeelprent wat landswyd in Amerika vertoon is.
