HMS Birkenhead

Die HMS Birkenhead was 'n Britse troepeskip wat op 26 Februarie 1852 by Danger Point naby Gansbaai in Suid-Afrika met die verlies van baie lewens vergaan het.^[1] Die skip het bekendheid verwerf vir die tradisie van "vroue en kinders eerste".^[2]

Statistiek van die HMS Birkenhead

Die skip was 'n troepedraer van 1 900 ton en een van die eerste Britse skepe wat met 'n staalromp toegerus was. Die skip was ook 'n wielstoomboot wat seile gedra het.

Agtergrond

Die skip het op 25 Februarie 1852 uit Simonstad vertrek met 476 Britse soldate, 7 vroue, 13 kinders en 'n aantal perde aan boord. Die bestemming was die Oos-Kaap waar die soldate by die garnisoene daar sou aansluit aangesien die Agtste Grensoorlog gewoed het. Die kaptein van die skip was Robert Salmond.

Die ramp

Die skip het 'n blinde rots ongeveer 1 km van Danger Point getref en die metaalromp het oopgeskeur. Ongeveer 100 soldate het verdrink terwyl hulle geslaap het in hulle banke op die onderste dek. Die oorblywende soldate is op die dek bymekaar geroep. In 'n desperate poging om die skip te red het kaptein Salmond beveel dat die masjien in trurat gegooi word. Dit was 'n noodlottige besluit omrede die metaalromp van die skip nog verder oopgeruk is.

Van die agt reddingsbote kon slegs drie te water gelaat word. Die vroue en kinders is in die bote gehelp met soveel mans as wat die bote kon vat. Toe is die bevel "Elke man vir homself. Almal wat kan swem, spring oorboord en swem na die bote" gegee. Die bevelvoerder van die troepe, lt-kol Alexander Seton, het sy swaard getrek en die manskappe beveel om nie oorboord te spring nie omdat hulle dan die reddingsbote sou verswelg. Die bote het op daardie stadium gesukkel om van die HMS Birkenhead af weg te kom. Die manskappe het die bevel gehoorsaam, selfs toe die skip in twee gebreek en die hoofmas en skoorsteen op die dek geval het.

Binne 20 minute het die skip gesink. Een reddingsboot het die kus by Hawston bereik. Die ander twee reddingsbote is opgepik deur 'n skoener wat onmiddellik na die ramp vertrek het. So is nog 50 man gered. Die skoener het uiteindelik Simonstad met 166 oorlewendes bereik. Nog 68 man en 8 perde het dit op eie stoom na die kus gemaak. Die res is nooit weer gesien nie, onder andere lt-kol. Seton en kaptein Salmond.

Goud aan boord die HMS Birkenhead

Verskeie pogings is aangewend om goud ter waarde van £300 000 wat na bewering aan boord was te herwin. Niemand het egter ooit enige vondse gerapporteer nie.^[3]

Salmonsdam-natuurreservaat

Die Salmonsdam-natuurreservaat naby Stanford is na kaptein Salmond vernoem.^[4]
