Ontwikkeling van die woord "moeder" in verskeie Indo-Europese tale.

Etimologie, vanuit die Griekse woord étumon ("die regte of ware") en die agtervoegsel -logia (die studie van), is die deel van taalkunde wat die herkoms van die betekenis en vorm van woorde (of dele van woorde, soos voor- en agtervoegsels en woord-stamme) bestudeer. Dit is een van die oudste onderdele van die taalstudie, reeds Aristoteles en Varro het opmerkings daaroor gemaak.[1]

Die etimologie van 'n woord is die historiese verklaring vir die manier waarop die vorm van die woord tot stand gekom het; daarom word daar ook van die woordherkoms (Duits: Wortherkunft) gepraat.

Iemand wat etimologie beoefen word 'n etimoloog genoem. Etimoloë werk dikwels aan woordeboeke en ensiklopedieë.

In die mediese taalgebruik kom daar baie woorddele voor wat van Latynse of Griekse oorsprong is, en soms word daar ook van gekombineerde Latyns-Griekse vorme gebruik gemaak om om nuwe terme te skep.
