Uranium pentafluorida adalah senyawa anorganik dengan rumus kimia UF5. Ia merupakan padatan paramagnetik berwarna kuning pucat. Senyawa ini menarik perhatian karena memiliki kaitan dengan uranium heksafluorida, yang secara luas digunakan untuk memproduksi bahan bakar uranium. Ia mengkristal dalam dua poliwujud, yang disebut α- dan β-UF5.

Sintesis dan struktur

Uranium pentafluorida adalah zat perantara dalam konversi uranium tetrafluorida menjadi UF6 yang bersifat volatil:

2 UF4 + F2 → 2 UF5
2 UF5 + F2 → 2 UF6

Senyawa ini dapat diproduksi dengan mereduksi uranium heksafluorida dengan karbon monoksida pada suhu tinggi.[1]

2 UF6 + CO → 2 UF5 + COF2

Bentuk-α adalah polimer koordinasi linear yang terdiri dari rantai pusat uranium oktahedral di mana salah satu dari lima anion fluorida membentuk jembatan ke atom uranium berikutnya.[3] Struktur ini mengingatkan kita pada struktur vanadium pentafluorida.

Dalam bentuk-β, pusat-pusat uranium mengadopsi struktur antiprismatik persegi.[4] Poliwujud-β secara bertahap berubah menjadi -α pada suhu 130 °C.[3]

UF5 monomerik

Secara teoretis, molekul UF5 dapat dihasilkan sebagai monomer sementara melalui fotolisis UV terhadap uranium heksafluorida. Ia diperkirakan mengadopsi geometri piramida persegi.[5]
