Universitas Newcastle (sebelumnya bernama Universitas Newcastle upon Tyne) adalah sebuah perguruan tinggi yang berbasiskan penelitian yang terletak di Newcastle upon TyneNorth East EnglandInggris. Universitas ini didirikan pertama kali dit ahun 1834 sebagai Sekolah Kedokteran dan Ilmu Bedah (yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Sekolah Kedokteran), dan Sekolah Ilmu Fisika (yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Armstrong College), yang didirikan pada tahun 1871. Dua sekolah ini kemudian bergabung dan menjadi salah satu divisi dari Universitas Durham. Dan sejak tahun 1937 Newcastle colleges bergabung menjadi King's College. Pada tahun 1963, sesuai dengan undang-undang Act of Parliament, King's College menjadi University Newcastle upon Tyne, dan akhirnya menjadi, Universitas Newcastle.[1]
Universitas ini disebut juga sebagai "red brick university" yang juga anggota dari jaringan universitas-universitas Russell Group,[3] sebuah jaringan universitas-universitas di Inggris yang berbasiskan penelitian secara intensif. Universitas ini merupakan salah satu universitas dengan portofolio riset yang terbesar di Uni Eropa.[4] Secara akademik, Universitas Newcastle masuk dalam jajaran top 1% universitas terbaik di dunia berdasarkan pemeringkatan dari QS World University Ranking dan Times Higher Education (THE). Universitas ini diminati tak kurang dari 20,000 calon-calon mahasiswa dari lebih 120 negara.Proses belajar mengajar dan penelitian diberikan pada 24 sekolah akademik dan 40 pusat riset dan institut riset, yang tersebar pada tiga Fakultas: Fakultas Kemanusian dan Ilmu-ilmu Sosial; Fakultas Ilmu-ilmu Kedokteran;dan Fakultas Ilmu Pertanian dan Teknik. Di universitas ini menawarkan tak kurang dari 175 strata 1 (S-1), penuh waktu dengan berbagai macam subyek seperti spanning arts, ilmu pengetahuan, teknik dan kedokteran, serta sekitar 340 untuk tingkat strata 2 (S-2) baik untuk program belajar mengajar maupun metode riset dari berbagai disiplin keilmuan.[5]
Sejarah
Universitas ini asalnya dari Sekolah Kedokteran dan Ilmu Bedah yang didirikan di kota Newcastle upon Tyne pada Oktober1834, dimana pada saat itu hanya mengajarkan pelajaran dasar dan demonstrasi praktikum kepada 26 mahasiswa/i. Pada Juni1851, dikarenakan adanya perbedaan pandangan di antara para pengajarnya, maka sekolah ini terpecah menjadi dua institusi yang berbeda.Sebagian besar para pengajarnya membentuk Newcastle College of Medicine, dan yang lainnya membentuk Newcastle upon Tyne College of Medicine and Practical Science. Baru pada tahun 1852, mereka secara legal merupakan bagian dari Universitas Durham. Ia mendapatkan 'Lisensi di bidang Kedokteran' (Lic.Med) pada tahun 1856, dan sertifkat mengajarnya diakui oleh Universitas London untuk para lulusan bidang kedokterannya.[6] Dua kolese yang berbeda ini akhirnya melebur menjadi satu pada tahun 1857 dan menamakan dirinya University of Durham College of Medicine yang secara resmi dan legal secara undang-undang pada tahun 1870.
