Umang

Umang dalam Bahasa Karo berarti Jin atau Roh. Menurut penuturan orang Karo, umang adalah makhluk kate setengah manusia dan setengah roh. Menurut cerita lisan, menyebutkan bahwa bentuk fisik umang adalah seperti manusia, tetapi ukuran tubuhnya lebih kecil dan memiliki kaki yang terbalik.

Menurut cerita turun temurun pada masyarakat Karo, diceritakan bahwa kerap terjadi hubungan kontak manusia dengan umang pada masa silam. Umang juga dipercaya tinggal di gua tertentu yang dijadikan sebagai rumahnya. Salah satu rumah umang yang paling terkenal adalah, gua kemang di desa Sembahe, Kecamaten Sibolangit, Kabupaten Deli Serdang, Sumatera Utara

Bukti Megalitik Gua Umang

Menurut para arkeolog dan sejarawan, Gua Umang kemungkinan adalah sebuah wadah kubur atau yang berfungsi serupa dengan sarkofagus. Demikian pendapat tersebut sejauh ini masih merupakan indikasi bagian budaya megalitik di Tanah Karo karena secara khusus objek arkeologis dimaksud belum pernah diteliti secara khusus dan mendalam.

Sampai saat ini belum diketahui secara pasti apa fungsi gua ini sebenarnya. Namun jika dilihat dari bentuk dan fungsi di daerah lain di Indonesia yang memiliki kesamaan, maka diduga objek ini memiliki fungsi yang berkaitan dengan penguburan. Keberadaan gua umang sendiri dapat ditemukan dibeberapa daerah di Tanah Karo, meski keberadaanya belum teridenfikasi seluruhnya.
