Ui-te-Rangiora

Ui-te-Rangiora adalah seorang penjelajah yang berasal dari Rarotonga, yang diyakini hidup pada abad ke-7. Berdasarkan legenda Māori ia berlayar hingga ke Samudra Antarktika dan melihat bongkahan es. Ia memberi nama wilayah tersebut dengan nama Tai-uka-a-pia (laut yang mengapung seperti garut (bahasa Inggris:arrowroot), karena gumpalan es terapung yang mirip dengan bubuk garut.[1]

Kebenaran

Kebenaran bahwa ia telah mencapai lauatan Antarktika masih menjadi pertanyaan.[2] Beberapa artefak pecahan tembikar dari Lapita menunjukan bahwa bangsa Polinesia tidak pernah mencapai daerah selatan.[3]

Kemungkinan penemuan Antarktika

Sangat sedikit yang mengetahui Ui-te-Rangiora atau tentang sejarah awal mengenai Polinesia namun hal tersebut menjadi legenda bangsa Maori[4] bahwa Ui-te-Rangiora memimpin ekspedisi ke Antarktika sekitar tahun 650.[5]
