Trias Tengah

Trias Tengah adalah kala kedua dari periode Trias, yang dimulai pada 247.2 juta tahun lalu, hingga 237 juta tahun lalu.

Dahulu, Trias Tengah dikenal dengan sebutan Muschelkalk. Naumn, sekarang nama ini digunakan untuk sebuah unit lapisan batuan yang berasal dari kala ini, yang ditemukan di Eropa Barat.

Fauna

Dahulu, Archosaurus lebih langka daripada therapsida, yang dhulu mendominasi ekosistem darat Perm. Namun, mereka (Archosauria) mulai mengambil alih peran therapsida sebagai hewan darat paling dominan pada kala ini.[1] Peristiwa ini diperkirakan berkontribusi pada evolusi mamalia. Hal ini memaksa spesies mamalia untuk hidup sebagai insektivor noktrunal bertubuh kecil. Kehidupan nokturnal diperkirakan memaksa proto-mamalia untuk mengembangkan bulu di tubuhnya, serta memiliki laju metabolisme basal yang lebih tinggi.[2]

Leluhur buaya, pterosaurus, dan dinoasurus adalah archosauria yang paling penting di kala ini.

Di Laut Tethys, sauropterygia pertama muncul.
