Toyokuni Utagawa

Utagawa Toyokuni (歌川丰国code: ja is deprecated ) lahir 1769 di Edo – 24 Februari 1825 di Edo), juga sering disebut sebagai Toyokuni I, untuk membedakan dia dari para teman di sekolahnya yang menggunakan nama Gō nya (nama seniman) setelah ia meninggal.^[1] Ia adalah guru besar dari seni lukis ukiyo-e, dikenal khususnya atas karyaya yang selalu menampilkan lukisan tentang aktor kabuki.^[1] Dia adalah kepala kedua dari sekolah seni lukis balok kayu Utagawa, dan merupakan seniman yang menduduki posisi ketenaran di bidang seni ukiyo-e selama abad kesembilan belas.^[1]

Toyokuni dilahirkan di Edo, anak dari Kurahashi Gorobei, pemahat boneka dan wayang, termasuk aktor kabuki.^[2] Pada umur 14 tahun-an, Toyokuni belajar ke kepala pertama rumah seni Utagawa, Utagawa Toyoharu, seseorang yang dikenal baik oleh ayahnya dan tinggal dekat dari rumahnya.^[2] Salah satu temannya yang juga belajar di bawah Toyoharu adalah Toyohiro, yang juga memiliki murid pelukis adalah lanskap seniman besar Hiroshige.^[2] Diakui akan kemampuan seninya, Toyokuni kemudian mengambil nama Utagawa Toyokuni, dengan huruf dan silaber mengikuti nama dari gurunya.^[2]
