Tomat ceri adalah sejenis tomat bulat kecil yang diyakini merupakan campuran genetik perantara antara tomat beri liar dan tomat kebun.[2] Ukuran tomat ceri berkisar dari sebesar ibu jari hingga sebesar bola golf, dan bentuknya dapat berkisar dari bulat hingga agak lonjong. Meski biasanya berwarna merah, warna lain seperti oranye, kuning, hijau, ungu, dan hitam juga ada.[3] Bentuknya seperti lonjong memiliki ciri-ciri yang sama dengan tomat plum dan tomat anggur . Tomat ceri dianggap sebagai varietas botani dari buah beri yang dibudidayakan, Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme .[4]

Sejarah

Tomat ceri diyakini sebagai nenek moyang langsung dari tomat budidaya modern dan merupakan satu-satunya tomat liar yang ditemukan di luar Amerika Selatan.[5] Tomat diperkirakan pertama kali dibudidayakan di wilayah Puebla-Veracruz di Meksiko dan mencapai wilayah ini dari Amerika Selatan dalam bentuk tomat ceri kurus.[5]

Referensi langsung pertama ke tomat ceri muncul pada tahun 1623, dalam sebuah karya berjudul Pinax theatri botanici</link> (Bahasa Inggris: Illustrated exposition of plant ) oleh ahli botani Swiss Caspar Bauhin, yang berisi deskripsi dan klasifikasi sekitar enam ribu spesies. Di bagian "Solanum" (nightshades), Bauhin menulis tentang varietas yang disebut Solanum racemosum cerasoru[m] forma</link> , yang diterjemahkan menjadi " Solanum</link> [yaitu] penuh tandan [racemosum], berbentuk (bentuk) buah ceri".[6]

Tomat ceri telah populer di Amerika Serikat setidaknya sejak tahun 1919.[7] Resep menggunakan tomat ceri dapat ditemukan di artikel tahun 1967.[8]

Kultivar

Tomat Tomaccio dikembangkan oleh Nahum Kedar dan Chaim Rabinovitch dari Fasilitas Pertanian Universitas Ibrani Yerusalem di Kampus Rehovot . Ini adalah hasil dari program pemuliaan selama 12 tahun yang menggunakan spesies tomat liar Peru untuk menghasilkan tomat camilan manis dengan waktu pemasakan dan umur simpan yang lebih baik.[9][10]

Super Sweet 100 adalah kultivar hibrida yang populer di Amerika Serikat dan tahan terhadap layu Fusarium dan Verticillium .

Nama tomat ceri Selke Biodynamic diambil dari nama Margrit Selke .[11]

Tomat ceri sungold hibrida tak tentu terkenal dengan tanaman cepat berbuah dan buah jeruk berwarna-warni.
