Kata sosialisme merujuk pada berbagai macam teori dan sistem sosial politik, dan telah tigunakan oleh banyak gerakan politik sepanjang sejarah untuk menjelaskan dirinya dan tujuannya, sehingga menghasilkan banyak tipe sosialisme. Sebagian yang menggambarkan dirinya sebagai sosialis menggunakan istilah sosialisme untuk merujuk pada berbagai hal, seperti sistem ekonomi, tipe masyarakat, pandangan filsafat, gabungan nilai moral dan gagasan, atau bahkan jenis tertentu karakter manusia.

Beberapa definisi sosialisme sangat samar,[1] sementara lainnya sangat spesifik sampai mereka hanya melingkupi minoritas kecil dalam apa yang telah dijelaskan sebagai "sosialisme" di masa lalu. Sudah ada banyak gerakan politik yang menyebut dirinya sebagai sosialis di bawah beberapa definisi istilah ini; artikel ini berusaha untuk mendaftar semuanya.
