The Killing Fields adalah sebuah film drama biografi Inggris 1984 tentang rezim Khmer Merah di Kamboja, yang berdasarkan pada pengalaman dua jurnalis: Dith Pran asal Kamboja dan Sydney Schanberg asal Amerika. Film tersebut disutradarai oleh Roland Joffé dan diproduksi oleh David Puttnam untuk perusahaannya Goldcrest Films. Sam Waterston berperan sebagai Schanberg, Haing S. Ngor sebagai Pran, Julian Sands sebagai Jon Swain, dan John Malkovich sebagai Al Rockoff. Adaptasi layar lebarnya ditulis oleh Bruce Robinson; iring-iringan musik-nya ditulis oleh Mike Oldfield dan diorkestrai oleh David Bedford.

Film tersebut meraih kesukesan di box office serta menjadi hit di kalangan kritikus. Di Academy Awards ke-57, film tersebut meraih delapan nominasi Oscar; temrasuk Film Terbaik; film tersebut memenangkan tiga diantaranya, terutama Aktor Pendukung Terbaik untuk Haing S. Ngor, yang telah memiliki pengalaman akting pada masa sebelumnya. Di British Academy Film Awards ke-38, film tersebut memenangkan delapan BAFTA, termasuk Film Terbaik dan Aktor Terbaik dalam sebuah Peran Utama untuk Ngor.

Pada 1999, British Film Institute mengangkat The Killing Fields menjadi film Inggris terbesar ke-100 sepanjang masa.

Sumber inspirasi

Penulisan skenario film untuk The Killing Fields bersumber dari berita-berita perang di Kamboja yang ditulis oleh seorang wartawan untuk koran The New York Times. Wartawan ini bernama Sydney Scahnberg.[2]

Pemeran

Beberapa pemeran The Killing Fields merupakan warga negara Kamboja yang mengalami langsung kebiadaban dari rezim komunisme bernama Khmer Merah.[3] Salah satu pemeran ini ialah Haing S. Ngor.[3]
