Tentara Besar Biadab (Great Heathen Army juga dikenal sebagai Great Army atau Great Danish Army), adalah tentara Viking yang berasal dari Denmark yang menjarah dan menguasai banyak wilayah Inggris di akhir abad ke-9. Tidak seperti halnya tentara berkuda Skandinavia pada periode tersebut, sumber-sumber yang ditemukan tidak memperlihatkan bukti jelas mengenai jumlahnya, tetapi cukup jelas merupakan kekuatan terbesar, dilihat dari jumlah kapal yang mencapai ratusan dan ribuan tentara.

Sejarah

Istilah "Tentara Besar Biadab" ("Great Heathen Army") dipakai dalam Kronik Anglo-Saxon. Banyak bukti dari tentara ini berasal dari kronik sejarah ini, mereka memulai tahun dari tanggal 1 September, banyak peristiwa yang terjadi pada tahun-tahun berikutnya. Artikel ini menggunakan kalender Gregorian secara keseluruhan.

Asal usul tentara ini dapat dilihat dari barisan pahlawan Viking yang menyerang Paris tahun 845, kemungkinan dipimpin oleh tokoh legendaris Viking Ragnar Lothbrok. Mereka menguasai wilayah dari tahun 850, berulang-ulang menjarah Rouen dan berbagai kota kecil, mungkin karena pertahanan yang lemah dari daerah yang mereka serang.

Karena berhasil dalam banyak daerah di Eropa, pasukan tentara ini tiba di Inggris akhir tahun 865, mendarat di East Anglia. Dibawah komando Halfdan Ragnarsson dan Ivar Ragnarsson, dengan dukungan Ubbe Ragnarsson, bertujuan menguasai dan menempati Inggris. Kisah-kisah Norwegia mempertimbangkan pendudukan atas kematian ayah mereka, Ragnar Lodbrok, di tangan Ælla Northumbria tahun 865, tetapi bukti sejarah belum memastikannya.

Akhir 866, mereka menguasai Kerajaan Northumbria, kemudian tahun 870 Kerajaan East Anglia. Tahun 871, Tentara Besar Musim Panas (Great Summer Army) tiba[2] dari Skandinavia dipimpin oleh Bagsecg. Hal ini menambah kekuatan Tentara Besar Biadab, memungkinkan untuk menguasai Mercia tahun 874. Bukti bahwa mereka tinggal di Derbyshire adalah adanya kuburan massal 250 orang di Repton dan beberapa lusin timbunan bekas kremasi dekat Ingleby.[3] Pada tahun yang sama, sebagian dari mereka tinggal di daerah yang mereka kuasai, diikuti kelompok lain tahun 877. Halfdan pindah ke utara untuk menyerang Picts, sementera Guthrum menjadi pemimpin perang di selatan, dan tahun 876 mereka bergabung dalam kekuatan dan memenangkan Pertempuran Wareham. Namun, Alfred yang Agung menyerang balik dan memenangkan pertempuran di Ethandun tahun 878, memperoleh Perjanjian Wedmore.

Pemukiman tentara membentuk Kerajaan York, yang selamat dari beberapa serangan sampai tahun 950-an.
