Sungai Swan

Sungai Swan (Noongar:Derbarl Yerrigan)[1][2] adalah sebuah sungai besar di barat daya Australia Barat. Sungai ini mengalir melalui wilayah metropolitan Perth, ibu kota dan kota terbesar Australia Barat.

Sungai Swan mengaliri Dataran Pesisir Swan, dengan total luas daerah tangkapan air lebih dari 100.000 kilometer persegi (39.000 mil persegi). Sungai ini terletak di wilayah beriklim Mediterania, dengan musim panas yang kering dan sejuk serta musim dingin yang basah dan sejuk, meskipun keseimbangan ini tampaknya berubah akibat perubahan iklim. Antara Perth dan Guildford, sungai melewati beberapa wilayah. Awalnya, wilayahnya termasuk Semenanjung Maylands, Ascot dan Burswood, melalui Claise Brook dan utara kota hingga Danau Herdsman, yang merupakan lahan basah berawa. Sebagian besar lahan basah telah direklamasi untuk pengembangan lahan. Pulau Heirisson, yang dilewati The Causeway, dulunya merupakan kumpulan pulau-pulau kecil yang dikenal sebagai Kepulauan Heirisson.[3][4]

Sungai ini diberi nama Swarte Swaene-Revier[5] oleh penjelajah Belanda, Willem de Vlamingh pada tahun 1697, diambil dari nama angsa hitam yang terkenal di daerah tersebut. Vlamingh berlayar dengan rombongan kecil menyusuri sungai menuju sekitar Pulau Heirisson.[6]

Swan River Trust adalah badan pemerintah negara bagian yang dibentuk pada tahun 1989 setelah undang-undang disahkan pada tahun sebelumnya, yang bertanggung jawab untuk merencanakan, melindungi dan mengelola sistem sungai Swan.[7][8]
