Soucouyant

Soucouyant atau Loogaroo adalah makhluk dalam mitologi Karibia yang mirip dengan vampir.^[1] Loogaroo adalah perempuan tua yang bersekutu dengan iblis. Dia memiliki kekuatan gaib dengan syarat setiap malam harus memberi persembahan darah pada iblis. Jika syarat itu tidak terpenuhi maka sang iblis akan mengambil darah dari perempuan itu sampai mati.^[2]

Loogaroo bisa menanggalkan kulitnya (biasanya dilakukan di bawah "Pohon Iblis", yaitu pohon kapas sutra) dan berubah menjadi nyala api atau bola cahaya biru lalu bergentayangan sepanjang malam untuk mencari darah untuk persembahannya. Setelah mengumpulkan cukup banyak darah, dia akan kembali memakai kulitnya dan berubah menjadi manusia.^[3]

Jika melihat biji-bijian yang tercecer, Longaroo akan berhenti dan menghitung semuanya, oleh karena itu gundukan pasir atau biji sering disimpan di depan pintu untuk berjaga-jaga dari serangan Longaroo, setidaknya sampai pagi hari. Dalam beberapa cerita, kulit longaroo yang disimpan di Pohon Iblis juga bisa diambil oleh orang lain supaya Longaroo tak bisa menemukan kulitnya.
