Sorowako adalah desa dan paling dikenal di kecamatan Nuha, Luwu Timur, Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia. Berada di ketinggian ± 1388 kaki dpl. Desa-desa di sekitar Sorowako yang termasuk dalam Kecamatan Nuha adalah: Desa Nuha, Desa Matano, Desa Magani,Desa Nikkel dan dusun disekitarnya antara lain: Pontada, Salonsa, Old Camp, Helai dan Lawewu.
Sekarang area Sorowako sudah berkembang dan dipecah menjadi 3 desa, yaitu desa Sorowako, kelurahan Magani dan desa Nikkel.
Hingga sekarang dengan adanya perusahaan Vale Indonesia yang dulunya PT. INCO, Tbk. beroperasi di daerah ini, menjadikan Sorowako yang dulunya penduduknya sedikit (thn 1968), sekarang (2013) sudah bertambah banyak karena sebagian besar karyawan berdomisili di daerah ini hampir 70% penduduk di Sorowako adalah pendatang yang berasal dari hampir semua provinsi di Indonesia dan sebagian kecil berasal dari ekspatriat. Selain itu Sorowako juga mempunyai penduduk asli yang bahasa aslinya adalah Soroako.
Di sekitar Sorowako terdapat 3 buah danau yang terkenal yaitu Danau Matano yang Sorowako berada persis di pinggirnya, Danau Mahalona dan Danau Towuti. Ketiga danau tersebut dihubungkan oleh sungai Larona.
Desa Sorowako menjadi salah satu wilayah di Sulawesi yang memiliki lahan dengan kandungan nikel yang berlimpah.[1] Sejak tahun 1968, wilayah Desa Sorowako seluas 118,387 hektar dijadikan sebagai lokasi pertambangan. Pada tanggal 27 Juli 1968, Pemerintah Indonesia menyetujui lahan konsensi seluas 218.528 hektar untuk dijadikan lahan pertambangan bagi perusahaan pertambangan bernama Inco. Kepemilikan pertambangan terus menjadi miliki perusahaan Inco meski berganti nama menjadi perusahaan Vale Inco pada tahun 2006 dan menjadi Vale Indonesia pada tahun 2011. Perubahan nama ini terjadi karena Pemerintah Indonesia telah memiliki saham sebesar 58,73% atas perusahaan Vale. Persentase ini mengurangi persentase saham milik perusahaan Kanada yaitu Vale Canada Limited.[2]
