Antigen golongan darah ABO yang terdapat dalam sel darah merah dan antibodi IgM yang ada dalam serum

Sistem golongan darah ABO digunakan untuk menunjukkan adanya salah satu, keduanya, atau tidak satu pun dari antigen A dan B dalam eritrosit.[1] Dalam transfusi darah manusia, sistem golongan darah ini merupakan yang paling penting dari 36 sistem klasifikasi golongan darah (atau golongan) yang diakui saat ini.[2] Suatu ketidakcocokan yang sangat jarang (dalam kedokteran modern) dalam hal ini, atau serotipe lainnya, dapat menyebabkan reaksi yang serius, berpotensi fatal, dan reaksi berbahaya setelah transfusi, atau respons imun kontraindikasi terhadap transplantasi organ.[3] Antibodi yang terkait dengan anti-A dan anti-B biasanya adalah antibodi IgM, yang dihasilkan pada tahun-tahun pertama kehidupan melalui sensitisasi terhadap zat-zat yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan, seperti makanan, bakteri, dan virus.

Golongan darah ABO ditemukan oleh Karl Landsteiner pada tahun 1901, di mana dia menerima Hadiah Nobel dalam Fisiologi atau Kedokteran pada tahun 1930. Golongan darah ABO juga terdapat dalam beberapa hewan lainnya seperti hewan pengerat dan kera, termasuk simpanse, bonobo, dan gorila.[4]
