Shyam Benegal (bahasa Hindi: श्याम बेनेगल; kelahiran 14 Desember 1934) adalah seorang sutradara dan penulis latar India. DEngan empat film pertamanya Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976) dan Bhumika (1977) ia membuat sebuah genre baru, yang sekarang disebut "sinema pertengahan" di India. Ia menyatakan bahwa ia tidak menyukai istilah tersebut, ia lebih suka karyanya disebut sinema Baru atau Alternatif.[1]

Ia dianugerahi Padma Shri pada 1976 dan Padma Bhushan pada 1991. Pada 8 Agustus 2007, Benegal dianugerahi penghargaan tertinggi di sinema India, Penghargaan Dadasaheb Phalke pada tahun 2005. Ia memenangkan Peenghargaan Film Nasional untuk Film Fitur Terbaik dalam bahasa Hindi sebanyak tujuh kali.

Kehidupan awal dan pendidikan

Shyam Benegal, lahir pada 14 Desember 1934 di Trimulgherry,[2] Secunderabad, kemudian menjadi sebuah Kekantonan Inggris, dan sekarang sebuah kota kembar dari ibu kota negara bagian, dengan nama Shyam Sunder Benegal. Ketika berada disana, ketika ia berusia dua belas tahun, ia membuat film pertamanya, dengan sebuah kamera yang diberikan kepadanya oleh fotografer ayahnya, Sridhar B. Benegal. Ia meraih gelar M.A. dalam Ekonomi dari Kolese Nizam, Universitas Osmania, Hyderabad.[3] Disana, ia membentuk Perhimpunan Perfilman Hyderabad.

Keluarga

Nenek pihak ibu sutradara film dan aktor terkenal Guru Dutt dan nenek pihak ayah Shyam adalah saudari kandung.[4]
