Sektor rusak

Sektor rusak atau sektor buruk (bahasa Inggris: bad sector) adalah suatu tanda yang menyatakan bahwa ada bagian tertentu dari fisik cakram keras atau cakram liuk yang mengalami kerusakan sehingga tidak dapat dibaca lagi. Saat sebuah sektor rusak ditemukan dan ditandai, sistem operasi seperti Windows atau Linux akan melewatkannya di masa mendatang. Sektor rusak merupakan ancaman terhadap keamanan informasi dalam arti remanensi data.

Detail

Bad sector dapat bersifat "halus" (logikal) atau "keras" (perangkat keras, fisik), tergantung yang membuat sektornya tidak dapat diakses. Jika terjadi kehilangan daya, bit akan membusuk (lebih memungkinkan pada floppy disks), atau kesalahan firmware, format pada diska dapat rusak melebihi apa yang dapat diperbaiki oleh kode koreksi kesalahan. Ini adalah sektor buruk yang “lunak”: menghilangkan data korup akan berhasil.[1]

Di sisi lain, sektor yang rusak secara fisik tidak dapat dipulihkan: penulisan akan gagal, memaksa pemetaan ulang. Sebuah drive baru mungkin dimulai dengan beberapa sektor buruk yang tidak berbahaya karena kelemahan manufaktur. Tambalan yang lebih besar terjadi selama penggunaan, akibat benturan kepala, keausan, guncangan fisik, atau intrusi debu.[2][1]

Sistem operasi

Bad sectors dapat dideteksi oleh sistem operasi atau pengontrol diska. Sebagian besar berkas sistem berisi ketentuan untuk sektor yang ditandai sebagai buruk, sehingga sistem operasi dapat menghindarinya di masa mendatang. Utilitas diagnostik diska, seperti CHKDSK (Microsoft Windows), Disk Utility (di macOS), atau badblocks (di Linux) dapat secara aktif mencari bad sector berdasarkan permintaan pengguna.

Metode manipulasi

Program Windows ATATool dapat digunakan untuk membuat bad sector "lunak" yang disengaja dengan memanipulasi data Error correction code (ECC) sektor. Ini dapat digunakan untuk memverifikasi dukungan bad sector pada utilitas diska dan alat forensik. Misalnya, membuat sektor 10 menjadi buruk:

hdparm mempunyai sebuah perintah --make-bad-sector yang bekerja secara mirip. Untuk drive terbaru, itu dapat digunakan sebagai alternatif WRITE_UNCORRECTABLE_EXT untuk "flag" sebuah sektor sebagai buruk: pengontrol drive tidak akan mencoba untuk membaca, tetapi langsung gagal.[3]

Frekuensi

Dalam sebuah riset 2007, CERN mengamati 1,53 juta hard drive dari 30 model selama 32 bulan dan menganalisis kesalahan pembacaan drive yang dikembalikan. Mereka mencatat bahwa 3.5% drive mengembangkan "kesalahan baca laten" (yaitu bad sector yang tidak dapat dibaca), dan sebuah diska dengan bad sector kemungkinan besar akan lebih berkembang. Sektor-sektor buruk berkelompok secara spasial (dalam sebuah lingkungan 10–MB) dan sementara. Kesalahan dipulihkan oleh ECC, yang dilaporkan oleh drive perusahaan (menggunakan kumpulan perintah SCSI), juga menyarankan sebuah kemungkinan tinggi dari sebuah bad sector di masa mendatang.[4]
