Schilling Austria adalah mata uang resmi negara Austria sebelum berpindah ke Euro. Mata uang ini berlaku pada rentang waktu 1925 sampai 1938 dan 1945 sampai 1999, tetapi hingga 2002 masih ada di sirkulasi uang. Schilling Austria memiliki nila €1 = 13,7603 saat euro mulai berlaku. Satu schilling dipecah menjadi 100 Groschen.

Schilling Austria adalah salah satu mata uang Eropa yang cukup stabil dan bernilai tinggi karena kebijakan moneter yang ketat oleh pemerintah Austria dan bank sentralnya.

Schilling pertama

Schilling diterbitkan melalui Undang Undang Schilling (Schillingrechnungsgesetz) pada 20 Desember 1924 dengan nilai 1 Schilling setara 10.000 Kronen Austro-Hungaria, dan mulai beredar pada 1 Maret 1925. Schilling kemudian digantikan Anschluss (1938) dengan nilai tukar 2 German Reichsmark setara 3 Schilling.

Terbitnya Schilling Austria tidak lepas dari bantuan ekonomi Liga Bangsa-Bangsa kepada Austria yang memungkinkan didirikannya Bank Sentral Austria. Schilling kemudian mulai diperjuangkan oleh parlemen Austria pada 1923.^[1]

Schilling kedua

Schilling kembali diperkenalkan setelah perang dunia kedua pada 30 November 1945 oleh tentara sekutu, yang menerbitkan uang kertas (tertanggal 1944) dalam pecahan 50 Groschen sampai 100 Schilling. Nilai tukarnya dibanding Reichsmark adalah 1:1, dibatasi 150 Schilling untuk tiap orang. Nationalbank juga mulai menerbitkan uang kertas Schilling pada 1945 dan koin pada 1946.

Dengan peraturan "Schilling" kedua pada 21 November 1947, uang kertas kembali diperkenalkan. Uang kertas awal bisa dipertukarkan dengan nilai 1:1 untuk 150 Schilling pertamam dan 1 Schilling baru untuk 3 Schilling lama untuk Schilling setelahnya. Koin tidak terpengaruh aksi perbaikan ini. Mata uang ini mulai stabil pada tahun 1950an, dengan pengikatan nilai Schilling dengan Dollar dengan perbandingan $1 sebanding dengan 26 Schilling. Seiring hancurnya sistem Bretton Woods pada 1971, Schilling kemudian diikat dengan beberapa mata uang lainnya. Dan kemudian Schilling digantungkan kepada German mark.

Walaupun Euro resmi menjadi mata uang Austria pada 1999, tetapi koin dan uang kertas Euro tidak diperkenalkan hingga 2002. Tahun berikutnya, Schilling mulai ditarik pada 28 Februari. Schilling yang tersisa tetap bisa dipertukarkan Austrian National Bank (Österreichische Nationalbank) tanpa batas waktu.
