Rumpun bahasa Semit Barat Laut adalah suatu bahasa Semit yang meliputi bahasa-bahasa pribumi di wilayah Syam. Bahasa-bahasa itu muncul dari Common Semitic di Zaman Perunggu Dini. Pertama kali dibuktikan dengan nama-nama orang yang diidentifikasi sebagai orang Amori di Zaman Perunggu Tengah. Teks koheren tertua adalah dalam bahasa Ugarit, yang berasal dari Zaman Perunggu Akhir, yang pada saat berakhirnya Zaman Perunggu bergabung dengan bahasa Aram Kuno, dan menjelang Zaman Besi dengan bahasa-bahasa Kanaan (Fenisia dan Ibrani).^[1] Istilah ini diciptakan oleh Carl Brockelmann pada tahun 1908,^[2] yang memisahkan klasifikasi Fritz Hommel tahun 1883 terkait "bahasa Semit Barat" ^[2] menjadi Barat Laut ( Kanaan dan Aram ) dan Barat Daya (Arab dan Abisinia).^[3]

Sub-kelompok Kanaan dari Brockelmann termasuk Ugaritik, Fenisia dan Ibrani. Beberapa sarjana sekarang akan memisahkan Ugaritik sebagai cabang terpisah dari bahasa-bahasa Semit Barat Laut bersama-sama Kanaan. Bahasa Semit Tengah adalah kelompok antara yang diusulkan terdiri dari bahasa-bahasa Semit Barat Laut dan Arab . Bahasa-bahasa Semit Tengah adalah salah satu subkelompok dari Semit Barat, atau divisi tingkat atas bahasa Semit bersama Semit Timur dan Semit Selatan .^[4] SIL Ethnologue dalam sistem klasifikasi (hanya untuk bahasa yang hidup) menghilangkan Semit Barat Laut seluruhnya dengan menggabungkan bahasa Kanaan dan Arab dalam kelompok "Selatan-Tengah" yang bersama-sama dengan bahasa Aram membentuk Semit Tengah.^[5]

Jelas bahwa skrip Taymanitic mengekspresikan variasi linguistik yang berbeda yang bukan bahasa Arab dan tidak terkait erat dengan Hismaik atau Safaitik, sementara itu secara tentatif dapat disarankan bahwa skrip itu lebih terkait erat dengan bahasa Semit Barat Laut.^[6]

Periode waktu pemisahan bahasa Semit Barat Laut dari Proto-Semit atau dari kelompok Semit lainnya tidak pasti. Bukti tertua keberadaan bahasa Semit Barat Laut adalah dari Ugaritik pada abad ke-14 SM.

Selama awal milenium pertama, bahasa Fenisia disebarkan ke seluruh Mediterania oleh penjajah Fenisia, terutama ke Carthage di Tunisia sekarang. Alfabet Fenisia sangat penting mendasar dalam sejarah manusia sebagai sumber dan leluhur alfabet Yunani, alfabet Latin yang muncul kemudian, sistem penulisan bahasa Aram (Bahasa Ibrani Square), Suryani, dan Arab, alfabet rune Jerman, dan akhirnya alfabet Kiril.

Pada abad ke-6 SM, penggunaan bahasa Aram menyebar ke seluruh wilayah Semit Barat Laut (lihat Imperial Aram ), sebagian besar mendorong bahasa Semit Barat Laut lainnya kepada kepunahan. Orang- orang Yahudi kuno mengadopsi bahasa Aram untuk penggunaan sehari-hari, dan beberapa bagian Tanakh ditulis dalam bahasa ini. Namun, bahasa Ibrani dipertahankan sebagai Bahasa liturgis Yahudi dan bahasa keilmuan, dan dibangkitkan pada abad ke-19, dengan adaptasi modern, untuk menjadi bahasa Ibrani Modern yang digunakan di Negara Israel .

Dengan penaklukan Islam pada abad ke-7 Masehi, bahasa Arab mulai secara bertahap menggantikan bahasa Aram di seluruh wilayah. Bahasa Aram bertahan hingga hari ini sebagai bahasa liturgis Gereja Kristen Siria, dan digunakan dalam dialek modern oleh populasi kecil dan terancam punah yang tersebar di seluruh Timur Tengah. Ada substratum bahasa Aram dalam bahasa Arab Levant .

Pergeseran bunyi

Secara fonologis, bahasa Ugaritik kehilangan suara * ṣ́, menggantinya dengan /sˤ/ ( ṣ ) (pergeseran yang sama terjadi dalam bahasa Kanaan dan Akadian ). Bahwa suara yang sama ini menjadi [[Ayin|/ʕ/]] dalam bahasa Aram (meskipun dalam bahasa Aram Kuno, ditulis dengan qoph ), menunjukkan bahwa Ugaritik bukanlah bahasa induk dari grup. Contoh dari pergeseran suara ini dapat dilihat dalam kata untuk bumi: Ugarit /ʔarsˤ/ ( 'arṣ ), Ibrani /ʔɛrɛsˤ/ ( ' ereṣ ) dan Aram /ʔarʕaː/ ( 'ar'ā' ).

Pergeseran vokal dari *aː ke /oː/ membedakan bahasa Kanaan dari Ugarit. Juga, dalam kelompok Kanaan, seri Semit interdental frikatif menjadi sibilan: *ð ( d ), *θ ( t ) dan *θ̣ ( t ) masing-masing menjadi [[Zayin (huruf Ibrani)|/z/]], /ʃ/ ( š ) dan /sˤ/ (ṣ).
