Rudyard Kipling

Joseph Rudyard Kipling adalah seorang penulis cerita pendek, novelis, dan penyair yang diingat terutama karena pendapatnya terhadap imperialisme Britania Raya di India.[1] Dia lahir di Bombay, India pada tanggal 30 Desember tahun 1865 dan meninggal saat 18 Januari 1936 di London, Inggris.[1] Ayahnya bernama John Lockwood Kipling, seorang seniman yang sekaligus menjadi kepala museum Lahore, dia memiliki pengaruh yang besar terhadap pekerjaan yang digeluti oleh Rudyard, sedang ibunya adalah Alice Macdonald.[1]

Kipling dibawa ke Inggris oleh orang tuanya saat berusia enam tahun dan dibiarkan selama lima tahun tinggal di sebuah rumah asuh di wilayah Southsea, hal ini digambarkannya dalam cerita berjudul Baa Baa, Black Sheep (1888).[1] Dia melanjutkan pendidikannya di United Services College daerah Westward Ho yang terletak di sebelah utara Devon, sebuah sekolah yang mempunyai asrama.[1] Dia kembali ke India pada tahun 1882 bekerja selama tujuh tahun sebagai jurnalis.[1] Rudyard menerbitkan syair-syairnya di Departemen Ditties tahun 1886, kemudian kumpulan cerita pendek miliknya yang berjudul Plain Tales from the Hills tahun 1888.[1] Kemudian, antara 1887 dan 1889, dia membuat cerita pendek sebanyak enam volume.[1] Dia terkenal dengan karyanya yang berjudul: Just So Stories, The Jungle Book dan Gunga Din.[2] Dia menerima Nobel Penghargaan untuk sastra pada tahun 1907.[2]
