Pierre Louis Rodolphe Julian (13 Juni 1839 – 2 Februari 1907) adalah seorang pelukis, etsa dan profesor, pendiri dan direktur Académie Julian di Paris. Ia lahir di Lapalud tenggara Prancis.[1] Penulis André Corthis (1882–1952), pemenang edisi 1906 dari Prix Femina adalah keponakannya.

Biografi

Julian bekerja sebagai karyawan di toko buku di Marseille. Dia tertarik pada olahraga, terutama gulat. Julian pergi ke Paris, di mana ia menjadi mahasiswa Léon Cogniet dan Alexandre Cabanel, profesor di cole des Beaux-Arts, tanpa terdaftar di sana.[2]

Pada tahun 1863 ia berpameran untuk pertama kalinya di salon-salon.[3]

Ia menikah dengan pelukis Amélie Beaury-Saurel pada tahun 1895.

Tantangan yang dihadapinya ketika di Paris membawanya untuk mendirikan pada tahun 1868, sebuah akademi seni swasta, Académie Julian, yang juga menawarkan pelatihan kepada seniman dan wanita asing yang memiliki sedikit akses ke akademi resmi. Tujuannya adalah untuk mempersiapkan siswa masuk ke Ecole des Beaux-Arts.[4]
Rodolphe Julian digambarkan oleh novelis dan kritikus Anglo-Irlandia George Moore sebagai "sejenis Hercules, berambut gelap, kuat, dengan bahu lebar, kaki pendek, suara lembut dan pesona Midi".[5]
