Rheiformes adalah ordo burung yang memiliki dua famili saja, yakni Rheidae (keluarga burung Rhea, masih ada) dan Opistodactylidae (sudah punah).^[3] Ordo burung ini terdapat di infrakelas Paleognathae. Anggota yang masih ada ditemukan di Amerika Selatan. Ordo ini dikategorikan oleh IOC World Bird List dan Clements Checklist sebagai ordo tersendiri,^[3]^[4] sedangkan BirdLife Data Zone menggabungkan rhea bersama dengan burung unta, tinamus, kasuari, emu, dan kiwi dalam ordo Struthioniformes.^[5]

Dari dua spesies rhea yang masih ada yang diakui oleh Daftar Merah IUCN, pada tahun 2022 spesies Rhea americana terdaftar sebagai spesies yang hampir terancam punah,^[6] sedangkan spesies Rhea pennata terdaftar sebagai yang paling tidak memprihatinkan.^[7]

Dari tahun 2014 hingga 2022, IUCN menyetujui Rhea tarapacensis sebagai spesies terpisah, dan mendaftarkannya sebagai spesies hampir terancam dalam penilaian terakhirnya pada tahun 2020,^[8] namun pada tahun 2022 spesies tersebut kembali diakui sebagai subspesies dari Rhea pennata.^[7]^(Taxonomy)
